****Official B1G In-Season Thread****

I wasn’t tagged (again) but conference titles are not my goal.

I blame the way our conference games are officiated. Seems like the tournament is always different and it's an adjustment. Regardless, think we all can get on board with no more tackle basketball.
Yep. I've been saying that for a while. As you say, it's hard to adjust once the tourney hits.

I think it also hurts recruiting. I know Purdue has lost out on recruits it wanted because they didn't want to play in the "Rugged B1G" and instead went to conferences like the SEC and ACC where they allow freedom of movement with much more consistency. I'm guessing everyone in the conference has as well.

I like both. Tournament can be the cherry on top or a shit sundae. My pecking order.

Pretty much the same, but I think I'd put Round of 32 ahead of BTT. Hell, I'd put whatever non-conference tournament Purdue plays in ahead of the BTT too.

We have another 5* recruit so maybe things are changing in that regard 😆😆

What are your goals?
To get the highest seed possible and go as far as possible in the tournament. It’s pretty vague and changes with every team. But I’d rather have a 1 seed that didn’t win the conference like we had 2 years ago than the 4 seed last year that won the conference.

Of course, they both ended the same way, but I’d still take that better seed every time.

It’s been a loooooong time since I was satisfied with an illini season. Maybe Groce’s first one?

As established posters on this board and fans of the “big time” programs I’d be interested in your opinion here as opposed to a fly by shitposter and fan of a program that hasn’t been to the dance in…shit I forgot…maybe ten years. TIA

I think in the past I aways put regular season conference championship between Final Four and Elite 8.

Pretty much. Conference Tourny may be bumped up a spot but that's it.

I think that plays a role, especially with the poor performance in 2021, but it's not like we have always flamed out on the First Weekend, and we have actually put a lot of teams at least in the position to win the National Championship. Since our last title in 2000, we have had the following teams make Final Fours:

2001: Michigan State loses in the Final Four
2002: Indiana loses in the NC Game
2005: Illinois loses in the NC Game; Michigan State loses in the Final Four
2007: Ohio State loses in the NC Game
2009: Michigan State loses in the NC Game
2010: Michigan State loses in the Final Four
2012: Ohio State loses in the Final Four
2013: Michigan loses in the NC Game
2014: Wisconsin loses in the Final Four
2015: Wisconsin loses in the NC Game; Michigan State loses in the Final Four
2018: Michigan loses in the NC Game
2019: Michigan State loses in the Final Four

So we've had 14 teams reach the final weekend, and we've had seven teams (and six separate programs) lose that final game. Many of those games went down to the wire, too. I really thought Michigan was good enough to win it all in 2013. In 2007, Ohio State ran into a once-in-a-generation Florida team that would repeat as champs behind Joakim. 2005 Illinois was a missed three that they'd made all year form beating a UNC team that might be the most talented team since 2000 in all of college basketball.

I think (a relatively small) part of it is honestly just bad luck, and then I think we also just don't have as many NBA-bound guards as other leagues have had. In the Tournament, it's scary to rely on a "traditional big man" or needing to be hot from three, and way too many Big Ten teams seem to lack that dynamic, go-to, future-pro guy who can get you two points when you need it most.

I wasn't asked, but this would be my exact list except for switching a conference title and a Sweet Sixteen ... won a Big Ten title last year, but we still need to get the Second Round loss monkey off of our backs.
