How consistent should a 14 year old be in shooting drills and shooting the basketball in general. What kind of percentage should he be shooting in drills.

Im not sure, seems his high school or middle school coach would be better suited to answer the question.

He didnt play in 8th grade because of Covid so I dont have a relationship with them.

But thanks

Nice handle. Needs to spread his feet out a bit more on the jumper, they are too close together. Will need to be quicker on the release too. Looks good getting to his spot in the first vid but takes forever to get the shot up.

His feet are way to close...which is keeping him from being able to square his body up. His right foot is slightly toward his left, which is causing him to ALSO shoot across his body----causing him to drift(left). With my son I had sim shoot 50 tree throws....feet squared to the shoulders. Then move him to each elbow, and shoot "FT style), i.e. stationary.I'd do the same from each corner/wing. All stationary---nothing off the dribble/pass. I wanted his mechanics first. Its obvious your son has the athletic ability/handles, etc, etc....But that is irrelevant if his mechanics are skewed.

Thank you for the feed back. For some reason his shooting knee goes in and causes what you are saying. I'll try what your tip.

Mechanics.....Becomes muscle memory....Repetition....Its why I had my son shoot every "jumper" as he would a FT...Then we would do catch and swaure drills, with no shooting....Dribble drills, square up....no shooting. Then back to FT style shots. I see a lot of kids catch , plant left foot, but shoot. A drill I used was to have my my son toss ball in front of of him, catch, plant left, then PIVOT hips, not just bring his leg around. By just brining your leg around, and not pivoting with your hips, there is no chance to get squared...you will get in the habit of shooting off your right foot, causing you to be off balanced, and shooting across your body, opposed to shooting with your body.

Heres a good clip to use.

That's awesome info.

IDK if you know, but fwiw, he's a basketball ref.
I was hoping for info from someone of that type of pedigree.

I made myself a D1 player. So I didnt get any assistance in the fundamentals. It's nice to get his type of feedback I never got growing up.

Good for you...Being a college official, I;ve had the pleasure of "officiating" scrimmages/practices, etc, etc....Learned a ton of stuff. Working summer camps as well helped. One of my better friends, so to speak, is Scotty Davenport---HC at Bellarmine. Also took Bruce Pearls coaching/officiaitng classes while at USI. Became "friends" with him, and he helped me get into officiating. During my time at USI, I officiating some of their scrimmages as well....Sat in on their practices. Pretty cool stuff, TBH.

you forget you've posted videos of your games.
Also, not sure how the season will go for me...YOu probably saw on wifes FB that I had a TIA---which is similar to a stroke. Had a TEE test done----its where they put a tibe with a camera on it, and look at your heart. Found small leak, and a hole between right.left atrium. GO back to doctor on 21st to see what the plan is...

Years back my wife had her removed as well. Had to go back due to blockage and she became really jaundice.

I played basketball through high school. I considered myself a decent shooter. Not great. Now granted, you have to take into account the defense at that age won't be very good from opponents, and the three point line is closer than college.

Hell, If I hit 2 out of 5 or 6 threes I took, I was happy. Not gonna comment on his form or mechanics or anything like that, everyone has their own way of shooting the ball. I would be please if I were him (and dad) if I was making 2 out of every 5 or 6 threes I took.

Free throws, Think I hit 7 out of 10 pretty consistently.

Scorty D is a good dude, and one helluva coach.

Great person.....And loyal as ****. Dude is a D1 caliber coach. He built Bellarmine into a D2 monster. I think eventually he'll have BU as aregular in the NCAAT.

Luckily for us, that nught we had a very persistent ER doc. He just came saying---"spmething is off here." Kept her overnight. Did so more test, with nothing. Finally he does an ultrasound, and was like if this comes back clear, probably gonna send her home. Welp, sure enough, it showed her gallbladder was really bad---and the "heart attack" pain she felt, was due to a gallbladder attack. Had surgery the next day. About an hour afterward, had her drink some sprite, eat some jello. For about 30 minutes she was good---Nurse waas like, gonna send her home. So I start taking shit to the car. Come back, and she is throwing up like crazy. So they give her some phenergan...Nope. Then for some reason, they have her try and eat a turkey sub----Bad, bad, bad idea. Violent sick. Give her more phenegran through IV, then through the booty. No relief.

So doctor is like, probably just a reaction to the anesthesia....Was gonna send her home. Bro---I was like, "ummmmm, naaah. That dog aint hunting." He's like, Mr. Cook, I'm the doctor----And? Told him,is it not the admitting doctors call? He wasn't happy with that, b/c he knew I was right. So they kept her two more days. Turns out her gallbaldder was so bad, it had impacted her liver, and her enzymes were through the roof----And not only that, BUT, she was not to have dolid food for 24-36 hours. Not sure how they ****ed that up.Problem is, they were so crowded they were just wanting to push folk out the door. **** that. I wrote a very long, LONG letter/email to the CEO of the hospital.

I have yet to get a respnse.

I played in HS as well....First at New Albany, then Borden. At 5'9", two small to play the "2",so played mostly PG. My junior year, I only shot like 34% from three....was very streaky. Had a game were I hbut 6/7, then had games where I couldn't find the ocean. Shot very well though from the FT line---around 88%. Our coach was a former college guy, and set me up with a shooting coach. Allthe stuff I;ve mentioned here, is what he showed me. And man did it work. I shot roughly 47% as a senior, and 94% from the line.

Mechanics, mechanics, mechanics...

Bordens advice on free throws is key I believe. You have to get the mechanics and muscle memory down and that has to start with a distance suited to current strength. I’d have him shoot thousands of free throw and when it becomes automatic - north of 85% - move on. Takes a lot of discipline because everyone wants to move out to shoot the long ball.

I agree with those who say focus on mechanics at whatever distance his strength can handle.

Waaaayyyyy better to get the mechanics down first and then gradually increase distance as he gets stronger over time than it is to just push shots from longer now.
