Gonzaga is a poor man's version of the old UNLV teams.

They played in a shit conference so they would have to load up on big time OCC games. And they played a ton of good schools in those OCC games.

RIP Tark and UNLV

Intimidating.....And those dudes would have won the B10, ACC, SEC, BE, etc, etc....Or at worse, finished Top 2 or 3. They were that good---especially in 1991. The title team lost 5 games, but damn they played KU(Loss), @ Oklahoma(loss, Top 10), #15 Iowa(W), #11 Arkansas(W), @# 14 LSU(Loss), Vs #20 Arizona(W), Vs # 16 Lousiville(W), #25 NM State(W)...

Lost two conference games somehow...

Then beat the shit our of everyone on the NCAAT that year, sans Ball St(62-60), and a tussle vs Ga Tech in the FF(90-81)l Other than that, they just smashed everyone---including Duke by 30 in the title game..

Then 1991--- Did the same shit---Smashed a very good MSU team...Top 20 Princeton team by 34...Won @ Louisville(I was at this game)...Won comfortably at #2 Arkansas... Beat Top 15 NM State twice...

Crusied to the FF, and then just absolutely choked dick vs Duke,

Damn those teams were fun...That game at Arkansas one of the best games I ever watched---Especially Augmon....Wow.

We played them 3 times back in their hay day, going 1-2.

They best our best team ever, which was a NC level team in 87. In 88 we beat them in the tournament and in 89 or 90, we got smoked in an OCC game.

They played sticky defense and were very athletic

I really liked Larry Johnson. I rooted for the Hoenets as a kid because of him. Back when I gave a shit about thr NBA.
I went to the UL/UNLV game the year they lost to Duke. HS friend of mine, his pops had seaason tix...I will tell you this---Unless you have ever seen LJ in person, you hve no clue how athletic, agile and quick he was. Dude was dominant----And TBH, I think not as dominant as he could have been, simply b/c I think he becme bored...Just an unstoppable force. Of all the players that day, I was most impressed with his athletic ability, speed, agility, etc....And yes, even more so than Augmon.

Of all the teams I have seen in person, that team is the best CBB team I have ever seen. If them and Duke played 10x's that year, UNLV would have won 9....That loss IMO was just one of those, how inthe **** did that happen, fluke shit....It really was. Vegas had ZERO respect for Duke, and you couls see that. Bad thing for them was, tht Duke team was pretty ****ing good in their own right.

Yep, 91 UNLV was significantly better than the national championship team from the year before. Should have finished the season undefeated. 90 UNLV actually lost 5 games including some head-scratchers along the way.

Ya know, man....I mean it sounds crazy, out of a move, conspiracy type of shit----And look, upsets happen---BIG upsets. We all know this. But there was just something about that game, their approach, and their approach----Just, well, "ho-hum". Did they take a dive? i doubt it. Maybe 50 years ago when that type of shit was, well, normal so to speak. TBH, I think they made the mistake of severely overlloking, disrespecting a very good basketball team. Then the game was tight....And it seemed at that point they were in shock, panicked, and well, lost...I am still amazed JOhnson , A) passed up a wide open shot he was capable of making, and B) Being so open, not driving at the basket. It was a weird play by a dude of his caliber.

Of all the heavy fav's in my lifetime to have lost, that game sticks out the most. ANd I mean more so than NCState vs Houston, Gtown/Nova(not that big of an upset TBH---that Nova team was way, way underseeded...). UMBC/UVA...That Vegas team was just better at every spot....A lot better, IMO. Maybe losing Butler was a bigger loss than thought? I dunno. I do know this----Vegas just didn't have that, well, "Mike Tyson" persona to them that day....

I can't believe IU beat UNLV in 87. It's a credit to Bob Kinght and the disciple of those IU teams
That was one of Knights top 10 coached games. We were dogs and everyone was saying IU had to keep the score in the 60s low 70s to have a chance. Knight knew better. Won a very high scoring game by getting the ball down court fast and getting Alford wide open looks from deep. That game is one of my all time favorites.

Classic game. It should have been us damn it!!!

We had UNLV down 20 at half. No doubt in my mind we would have won the NC if we could have gotten past them.

The UNLV game will haunt me forever. I am still not over it.

If it were Iowa the game would have been very similar. Those 2 games that year between Iowa and IU were epic.

One of the best moves he made in that game, was playing Eyl at the point..
