Grimes declares for NBA

Hiring an agent or is he open to returning.
You can still hire an agent and return according to new rules
Doesn't mention if he is just testing but as boogie said, the new rule is you can use an agent to guide you thru the process now. He is not expected back based on a number of things: 1-His plan has always been 1 and done no matter what
2-Is rumored to have a lot of people in his ear that influence him to make the jump all year
3-Left school to go back to texas after the auburn loss and hasn't been back on campus since.

Doesn't the agents have to be certified agents. ie approved by the NCAA or something. I could be way off base.

No idea to tell you the truth. Do you have to be invited by a team or the nba to be able to declare ? I don't even think he is listed on any mock drafts.

Yeah I believe that players have to use NCAA approved agents in order to return to school if it looks like they won’t get drafted or they don’t like their possible draft position.

He went back to Texas to work with his shooting coach. I know because my son has the same shooting coach and I saw and talked to him Sunday. He lost confidence in his shot.

If he left school early that will affect the team APR required by the NCAA. Not a good look.

He could be taking online classes. Didn’t P.J. do something similar last season?

I’m guessing no. If the general public had any idea what major div 1 players have to accomplish in class to remain eligible...you would lol. You have guys like can barely formulate sentences making the honor roll. When is the last time a guy sat out games bc of his grades while in college. How many guys had severe academic issues in high school all of sudden are graduating college in 3 years. It’s a joke.

You must be talking about UNC.

I know he finished but I thought he went out west to train while he took online classes to finish.

i am not sure how that works
but i find it hard to believe that a guy would have to attend classes for 3 months and then be allowed to finish the course online
maybe they can IDK

it does affect the APR
UK took a hit with Orton
one player not finishing a semester will not get a school into trouble unless they are already on the bubble

It’s everywhere. Even guys that got solid grades in hs. Over half of div 1 b-ball players have jokes of schedules. Think. 2 or 3 classes a wk and the most elementary courses imaginable online. It does not resemble anything normal students have to take.

And they have access to the best tutors the university has to offer pretty much whenever they want see them.

I remember one of my classes freshman year. It was nothing but athletes. The class was called Life Skills. Lol

Random fans that feel some weird need to act like players academic life is rigorous just bc they play for their fav team makes me laugh. Being an athlete gives you a semi free pass to do the rock bottom bare minimum.

Well the rumors that he left immediately after the Auburn game set quite a different tone to this announcement, Luckily his parent weren't legacy KU because that would have been a clear and direct insult to our coaching staff and program.

I appreciate his effort but the reality of the season is maybea top 100 player coming out of HS/AAU ball, the hype was all hype.

Working on his shot here in TX getting rdy for the combine, only problem now is how to get that pesky game tape deleted.

Dude was terrible. Will have a tough time even playing in the G league. Mediocre shooting. Weak at the rim. Poor lateral quickness. Terrible rebounder. KU better without him

Sounds like Grimes has online classes the whole time from what been told.Hard to say if he kept up with the work after he decided to leave though.

Also, funny that a UK poster knows whats going on when even KU people arent even sure yet.

He should just show highlights of the first game of the season against MSU. He looked like a top ten pick that game

Part of me feels like just about every top 25 kid is going to declare at this point. It's almost like they're trying to save face. "I don't want to be left behind by my peers. I'm as good as them... pretty sure. Yeah! I'm 1st Round talent, even if I didn't average double-figures for a team that failed to advance to the second weekend." Sad. We often get a long list of who is declaring for the NBA Draft. At this point, I'm semi-more interested in the short list of notable players that are returning. Who we got at this point? Jalen Smith, Ashton Hagans, and Tre Jones. Is that it?

I think a few of these will still return. Even if you hire an agent, you can now return to college.

I would think/hope so. Just seems like college basketball has shifted quite a bit in the past 5 years or so. Previously, guys would generally only leave if they were guaranteed of being a first rounder. Nowadays, just the likelihood of being drafted seems sufficient. And some guys are okay starting their careers early, whether that means G-League or Europe.

Yeah I believe that players have to use NCAA approved agents in order to return to school if it looks like they won’t get drafted or they don’t like their possible draft position.

I found this:

Hiring Agents

One of the biggest changes includes allowing high school basketball prospects deemed as elite to hire agents. The NCAA's Board of Governors and Division I Board of Directors say the player can hire the agent by July 1 before their senior year in high school. According to the NCAA, USA Basketball will be judging if the players are elite or not.

College players may also hire an agent after any season if they've requested an evaluation from the NBA Undergraduate Advisory Committee. This committee provides information to possible early-entry players, like if they would be drafted and where they would be picked. All agents will need to be certified by the NCAA no later than Aug. 1, 2020 to represent either high school or college players. According to the NCAA, agents certified by the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) will be eligible.

Agents may also now pay for meals and transportation for players and families as long as they're related to the agent selection process or meetings with an agent or pro team. That money has to be spent either in the area the student lives or where they go to school.

Returning to School

Hiring an agent has been commonly thought of as a final step to declaring for the NBA Draft. While college players have had a deadline to withdraw their pro declaration, these new changes would allow those who went undrafted to return to school.

The NCAA states if a player has requested an Undergraduate Advisory Committee evaluation, participated in the NBA Combine and gone undrafted, they can notify their athletic director of their desire to return to school by 5 p.m. on the Monday after the draft. This is pending an expected change from the NBA and NBPA, which would make undrafted student-athletes who return to college after the draft ineligible for the NBA until the end of the next college basketball season.

If those who left early want to come back to school to finish their degree, Division I schools will now be required "to pay for tuition, fees and books for basketball players who leave school and return later to the same school to earn their degree." These former student-athletes can do this if they were on scholarship and it's been fewer than 10 years since they left school.

The NCAA is establishing a fund for schools that are otherwise unable to provide financial aid for basketball players to return to school.

Especially if you are going to UNC.

Kansas being investigated by the NCAA.
Last week at the Final Four, NCAA President Mark Emmert gave an update on those efforts, saying, “We're going to continue to argue aggressively that they should provide that information so we can get to the facts, since there's so much interest, not just on our part, but across the country and knowing what really transpired there.”

An NCAA rule change earlier this year allows the NCAA to use whatever information it gets from those outside investigations in determining whether violations occurred at its member institutions.

I heard from a recruiting guru that the recruiting scene thinks that Self won’t be there next year and that’s why they can’t recruit to save their lives right now while UL has a good class. One coach is safe and the other isn’t.
