Feast week - Maui & Vegas game thread

I acknowledged that the last two years were great. But he has also had 12 years where he had 10 losses or more 9 of the 12 years and 8 of those 12 years he failed to make the NCAAT. The 4 times he did make it in those 12 years, it was a first round exit. Yeah the back to back titles were great, but the other 12 years of his career were very mediocre. For me it takes more than two great years and 12 mediocre ones to be be labeled as a "great" coach. Good? yes, great? Meh. It's ok to agree to disagree. If everyone had the same opinion, there would be no reason for these forums to exist.
Kevin Ollie was quickly anointed the chosen one when UConn won in his 2nd season. Turns out he was trash.

I think people have gone overboard in praising Hurley, but you're going a little overboard in the other direction.

You failed to mention that 8 of those 12 years were spent at Wagner and Rhode Island. Not exactly traditional powerhouses. Wagner won 5 games the year before Hurley was hired, and in year one he improved them by 8 wins. In year two, they won 25 games. He inherited a 7-win team at RI, and they got steadily better, reaching the tourney his last two years.

Wagner's been to the tourney twice in its entire history. Rhode Island's been to the tourney twice this century. Both teams were coached by Hurley.

This take is as disingenuous as claiming Scheyer did something amazing by getting loaded Duke teams to the 2nd round and regional final.

Maybe, but I still think it takes more than two seasons to be labeled as "great". Especially when it's being based mostly on a one and done tournament where anything can happen. I don't think he sucks as a coach, and his teams teams generally do play hard. I'm just not ready to say he's a great.
