No trolling for a moment, but do you think K has any regrets going down the OAD route? I mean, he’s always recruited the best players, so that hasn’t changed. But in this OAD era, he’s recruited better than anyone. He’s turning over 3/4 studs per year. I watched his presser last night and he was extremely gracious and complimentary of UNC’s Seniors. He looked wistful and almost seemed like he was thinking back to those teams comprised of upperclassmen.

My guess is that he misses the old way of doing things, but also feels the best chance to win is with talents who are also, these days, OAD. But who wouldn’t miss having guys stick around? I miss it, for sure.

I think this will be the third year K has more than 1 OAD. It is what it is. He is coaching the best and the best want to play for him. He has won a NC in 3 different eras. GOAT. Plus, some like Winslow and Tyus weren’t really OAD until they win the NC.

I mean when cal did it, it was the worst thing to ever happen to college basketball just ask Bobby Knight. Now that k is doing it, it’s completely acceptable, no Bobby Knight to be found. I personally don’t like the oad era, I wish it would go away.
This. K is doing a better job at recruiting the top rated OAD guys now than Cal is, meaning Ks classes are ranked 1 and ours 2 every year now. He adapted and stole our thunder because we were on an absolute tear.

But when you alao just go back and look objectively at the results, we've won more games in the era so yeah, there is something to be said about us freaking out about it. UK is doing just fine.

I dont believe that K would have ever fooled with it unless his hand had been forced. It seems like the pendulum is swinging back more towards multiple year guys anyway. Look at what UNC has been doing this whole time. They've been fantastic as well.

Honestly, I believe every coach would rather have the 4 year guys. Cal pioneered a new strategy and people followed. I suppose we should be thanking Duke for getting on board, because we finally stopped hearing the media idiocy about how awful Calipari was for doing it once K got in on it

I’m sure he would like for a large % of his players to stay more than one season, but when you recruit elite talent, who should be in the NBA anyway, why hold them back?

Also, the guy has had THE worst luck when it comes to injuries. Either star players come in injured or get injured during the season. His 2015 team, made of multiple OADs, remained injury free and we won it all. 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019 have sucked with injuries.

I do think if Grayson Allen’s shot fall or the refs make the correct call against Wendell Carter against Kansas in the Elite 8, we’re not hearing anything about K’s teams. But since it’s been 4 years since a Final 4 and a title, his record is scrutinized.

He could sure shut some people up with a deep run this tournament, so we’ll see.

In summation, “We’ve only lost the last 4 years because of injury, and a bad call by the refs.” Lol.

Lol @ Cal pioneered a new strategy. A rule put in place by the NBA was not Cal’s idea. Plus, K had a OAD before Cal in 1999.

Wow, thats not at all disingenuous. Its your contention that this was widely practiced recruiting strategy before Cal began it at Kentucky? This isnt even remotely defensible. I mean...this isnt even an opinionated debate....its what happened. You want to cite isolated OADs over a few decades to refute it, have fun. Meanehile the rest of us in reality accept that John Calipari made it an annual roster building strategy.

Kind of a dumb question. I'm sure Coach K and all coaches miss the era when their 5 star recruits would stay 3-4 years as opposed to having to scramble for new ones every year. Common sense.

Since 2014-15, ACC wins:

Roy 66
K 64

So, there isn’t that much disparity in wins (within the Conference) with the way both coaches construct their teams. Both teams have a title and UNC has one extra FF.

Totally agree with the OP’s suggestion, K should stop going after OADs.

Well when you turn over the roster every year, have a 6 or 7 man rotation and don’t develop your bench, injuries become a much bigger issue. UNC has been missing two rotational players (Manley and Black) for basically the entire conference schedule but because we actually develop players and depth, you haven’t heard anything about it.

Looks like an opinion to me. A lot of teams can claim the same thing so if Duke falls short this year get ready for the "facts".
By UNC fans. Roy recruits them, just hasn’t had them commit. Except this year with White and Little. All your whining about K and OAD’s is comical since Roy recruits them as well. He even said it this week.

Which starters from UNC have missed games due to injury. Also, look at the UNC starters minutes this year.

. . . And don’t forget the ol’ “Biggest underachiever, all that talent and only one championship.” poppycock. At least that angle has now been diluted and whimpered a quiet death.

I’m not but play on Phil.

Only afam u fans can complain about officials and injuries. How many times have we heard about Kenny Smiths wrist and Kendall Marshal.

And no excuses here. Some of you are setting the ground work for that narrative right now.

I have no reason to believe he wont, but UK clearly isnt a title contender without Reid Travis back.

We also clearly are better equipped to go further sans Reid than Duke is sans Zion.

As a UK fan Im going to bitch abiut the refs regardless, just go ahead and accept that.

Goodness there are some excuses by these Duke fans. A few of you guys can rival Rafters with your nonsense, not to mention not being able to differentiate between facts and opinions.

Well, Bobby Knight has been battling alzheimers for several years so Duke’s recruiting strategy may not be the most important thing to him right now.

To be fair it is only Q and that afam dude. I don't think anyone really takes either seriously anymore.
So you don’t think Zion’s and Boldens injuries effected the results. Why is that an excuse? It’s a fact. Your choice to believe it or not.

Ugh. You too?

Just calling em like I see em.

Obviously the Zion injury impacts Duke significantly. We all get that. No one would suggest otherwise.

But most other teams go through really bad injuries too. Look at Kansas with Embiid and Azubuike. The difference is, we don’t have Kansas posters telling us how they are the unluckiest bunch ever.

Q and Afam don’t have to remind us of Zion’s injury every week. We all follow college basketball. We all know he’s hurt.
