Convince me duke wouldn’t be better without Barrett

BTW, to make this thread worthwhile... anyone else see Barrett a lot like Tatum at Duke? I feel like the two are very similar in terms of the way they are developing, and how their game translates and will continue to translate through the year.

Tatum could shoot even in college.

RJ will be the reason Duke doesn’t win he championship.

Put Zion on any other team in the top ten that doesn’t have RJ Barrett and they are probably undefeated and likely finish the season the same way

HOT TAKE: Put the best player in CBB on any team in the top 10 and they win the title

At about the same percentage as Barrett is currently at. Tatum has actually shot the ball better as a pro than while at Duke.
This is actually pretty normal. The NBA game is so much more isolation and spread out. Not as easy to pack it in the paint and run out at shooters on the perimeter

Just to put this post in perspective:

RJ Barrett averages more assists per game than any player on Kentucky's team.

Boom! Lots of Kentucky fans hate Barrett. Not sure if it’s because he didn’t choose UK or stated Cal said he didn’t know how he would
use him in his offense or what. But man, they are infatuated over him. Maybe it’s because Barrett set the Duke scoring record for a freshman...against Kentucky?

Link to any spot other than Rafters? Seems like there is one UK fan arguing against him here and everyone else defending him

If Barrett plays like he did against UVA, they will be ridiculously tough to beat. He didn't settle for jumpers and drove the ball effectively. He also dished the ball to Zion and let him operate one on one as well. He also played really good defense without fouling (at least didn't get called for any fouls in that game). We'll see if he is able to consistently play that "smart".

I would imagine most Kentucky fans hate Zion more than RJ.

As a college basketball fan and not just a Kentucky fan I don’t think Zion should be dealing with the most selfish player in the country.

At one point I might agree but the NBA is a different game than it was just 5 years ago. Forget about 15-20 years ago. People wouldn't recognize the NBA as the same game if it were being payed the same way now. There is no more packing in the paint any more in the NBA. Those days are gone.

I think you are agreeing with me. I meant college teams pack it in more, not pros. That's why I was arguing some percentages jump in the NBA. There is absolutely no packing the paint in the NBA anymore.

There is no one in the paint at all anymore, just 5 guys standing around the perimeter shooting threes. I can't stand the NBA, I liked that Barkley called it out during the UK/Auburn game.

I like to think the game will return to big guys and attacking the basket more. Most things seem to run in cycles in sports, I'm hoping the NBA is no different. Way too many divas playing soft basketball right now.

I love Barkley but there are a lot of people who enjoy the NBA for what it is. I personally love the shooting and more open offenses. Who the heck wants to watch a UVA style of basketball being played by some of the most incredible athletes in the world? Back when Boston and LA (80's) were at an uptick in their rivalry, there was a good mix of low post play, perimeter play and open court play. It was a high scoring time in the NBA. The 90's went away from those things and more to isolation basketball. Fortunately we got through that and basketball is interesting now again, IMO. Not sure I would be as into the game if I had to watch guys like Barkley (in his prime) dribble 10 times backing down a defender and then either chuck up a fade away mid range shot or try and draw a foul. I prefer to see these guys get out and show off their unique skills and abilities.

I said undefeated in case you struggle reading

So. Duke is 8 points or so from being undefeated right now.

So your take is that if you take a guy who is having the most efficient season in college basketball history, and put him on a team that is top ten... let's go with #5, which is the median... that he might make up the difference between being undefeated and not, which in the case of the #5 team in the country is one point?

Jesus. Hot take after hot take.

Naw it’s Barrett by a mile. Maybe because he’s undefeated against Cal as well!

Hopefully they have the same outcome in the tournament

I don't know, hard to underrate a guy who is said to one or two in the draft.

I mean, random fans who hate Duke might think that, but normal people, not really.

Interesting article... some of the more advanced metrics that RJ does well in are interesting, and he is in some elite company.

How can anyone hate on a kid who’s projected top 2 in the upcoming draft?

I hope RJ doesn’t change a thing And keeps playing me ball
You’re a genius, RJ is second on the team in assists this season but yeah you’re right he’s playing me ball. He made some bad plays at the end of the Gonzaga game but they beat us because they outplayed us in the first half and we dug ourselves into too deep of a hole to get out of in the second half but we still came back and gave ourselves a chance to win. If you think Duke would be undefeated without him then you’re crazier than you sound because without RJ then there’s a good possibility that we have more than 2 losses if he’s not on the team.

I think this is a bad take. RJ Barrett is extremely talented, but I don't like his feel for the game. Dude is a major stat hunter. Still yet, his talent is enough to handle the overwhelming majority of college basketball players.

What I find amazing is at the beginning of the year Barrett was hands down the number 1 pick, that has obviously changed with the emergence of Zion. He won’t make it to the second pick. Zion will be drafted by the cavs who have won a staggering 9 games

I think a lot of people were worried that Zion would be more one dimensional, and might struggle against better competition.

Turns out not so much.... but there was little chance, I think, of anyone predicting this, you know?

True, being an undersized 4 hasn’t slowed him down. I do think having Barrett and reddish with a little white helps that. If those guys weren’t around I think he may struggle a little more because right now you pick your poison. If it was just Zion teams would double team him all day long. Whatever team does draft him will need to surround him with really good talent. He flourishes much more. I think it will be a lot harder for him if he doesn’t have anything to go around him. He’s a decent shooter and will need help. So if Cleveland does indeed draft him he will play the 3 and will have to improve his shot to keep the defense from collapsing on him.
