Can the SEC Ever Really Compete Yearly?

We’ve seen the coaching carousel turn in the conference this week, leaving a couple jobs open, although I don't know if either coach was really given long enough. Avery Johnson brought in Sexton, Drew brought in 2 highly ranked recruits but suffered the loss of one of them early in the season.

The quality of coach has been improving (Barnes, Crean, Howland, White), but the results seem to be the same - at least for now - with exception of UT. Could someone like Hurley, Greg Marshall etc. come in and help to lift the conference to a higher yearly expectation or will it always be the stepchild to football?

Other than Kentucky and maybe UF, no.

I guess throw in LSU if they ever really got an elite coach. Lots of talent in that state.

I think we know how Alabama, Auburn & LSU got so good so fast.

I’m very frustrated Martin hasn’t used our Final Four in ‘17 as a spring board to better recruiting. I think he’s a great basketball coach, but can’t recruit for shit. Millennials just don’t want to come play for tough SOBs that won’t slurp them.

I think Martin is a great ambassador for the SEC. I was really happy for him and the program that year. I just wish it could continue.

I think you’re looking at too short of a timeline here.

SEC was a 3 bid league as recent as 2014. Last year, SEC had 8 bids, and this year 7, with a team in the first four out.

I’d consider that a significant stride in that time period.

The results are definitely not the same. Way better than a few years ago. Doesn’t mean we are the best conference, but we aren’t the Pac 12 anymore.

Have to keep the good coaches though.

Undoubtedly. It probably seems that way because there really hasn’t been any in-conferences dynasties since Arkansas and Florida.

True. That’s a tough comp though. That UF team had 3 pros that had decade(+) long careers in the NBA play multiple years in college.

The odds of that happening today are astronomical.

it is always UK and "the new kid on the block" in the SEC
just like in the ACC it is always Duke and UNC with an occasional outlier like UVA
in the B10 it is always UM and MSU with an occasional bottom feeder having a good year
in the B12 it is always KU and sometimes a bottom feeder
IN the PAC...............who cares
