Cal's agent treated the UK's BOD/AD like a bunch of "slack jawed[sic] prepubescent yokel dimwits"

The dude seriously sucks as a coach. He doesn’t develop players. He needs the elite of the elite talent to have a good team.

It has blown my mind why recruits still play for him.
This. His issue is he stopped getting the elite of the elite routinely like he was his first few years there. He also prioritizes athleticism over actual basketball skills way to much

I did a drive by to RR and he's getting killed over there. What's crazy to me is that he's got talented players on the bench but he won't use them for a extended period of time.

Anyone who criticized Cal's coaching used to be branded a hater. Is the UK fanbase now full of haters?👀
Come on, give me a break with this. Context.

People said he “threw the ball out” when we were winning and it was silly. Those people were the definition of haters.

We are not winning anymore, and it’s obvious Cal has regressed. Naturally, fans will not be happy with that. Your argument only works if the results were consistent in his 14 years. The first 6 or 7 couldn’t be more different than the last 7 or 8.

I know you are just wanting to kick us while we are down, but I got nothing better to do than entertain it.

Nah I think cal is the same coach now he was then. You just don’t have the same talent advantage you had from 2009-2015. You haven’t signed near the talent the last 6 years. Anthony Davis, John wall, Denarcus cousins, Julius randel, Karl Anthony towns, devin Booker, kids gilchrist, etc. Maxey and fox are basically the only top nba talents Kentucky has had since 2016. Oscar is a great college player but there is a reason nba guys don’t think that highly of him. Cal also has refused to sign actually basketball talents. He gets to caught up with athleticism at times

Cal coached a team with Josh Harrelson as center to a final four. I do not think talent is the main variable in this equation that is Cals coaching. Probably part of it, but not the main reason.

That 2011 team would stroke your current team. Harrelson played out of his mind for 2 weeks. Then no showed at the final 4. Brandon knight is also better than anyone on your current roster. Darius Miller is Also Kentucky’s best leader as a player over the last 15 years. Cal’s coaching is a problem. The issue is you don’t have enough talent now to mask it like you used to.

Hey, I'm not the one who started the thread. I haven't said a whole lot about it (despite the fact that YetAnotherCuck and some others were really obnoxious leading up to the season).

I've never said that Calipari had no coaching ability. I said that I didn't think he was a great Xs and Os guy, and relied heavily on having a huge talent advantage. That got me branded a hater.

What do you mean exactly when you say he's regressed? What knowledge or ability did he possess a few years ago that he doesn't now?

You don’t go from 4 final fours in 6 years to the worst season in program history, worst tournament loss in program history, and not winning tournament games for 3 straight years (maybe four if we include this year) because of talent drop off alone. It just doesn’t work like that. The game is passing him by. Kentucky still has more talent than 95 percent of its competition.

I mean, to me it’s obvious. Especially on offense. We’ve never been a juggernaut under Cal on the offensive end, sans a couple of teams. But we are now struggling to score more than 50 points a game vs any kind of legit competition. The game is evolving to a more spaced out court. Spreading people out. Watching our basketball team is hard because the average fan will know that, yet we see combinations of Lance Ware, Oscar, and Toppin on the floor at the same time.

It’s a lineup that works 10, 12 years ago. If you play them together today, well, games like Missouri happen.

This is just one example, I could go on and on. But it’s a legit example of just how poor Cals coaching has become. It was never top notch, but never this obviously bad, either.

Again compare the talent you had that first 6 years to the talent you have had since. You may be still more talented than most but the gap is much closer now than it was from 2009-2015.

There is a talent disparity, but there is no offensive scheme. He had the dribble drive back then, which worked.

Now he has the "have 4 players standing around clogging lanes and pass once and take a terrible shot or just pass it to Oscar while he gets assaulted and triple teamed or slow it down while Wheeler tries a last second drive which works 5% of the time" offense.

Cals solution to not being able to score? Play 2 or 3 bigs and no shooters.

I am not disagreeing with that. I am disagreeing it is the main reason we are seeing the drop off we are seeing. It has much more to do with Cal being too stubborn to adjust his offense and tendencies to fit the current style of play in basketball. He is still recruiting the same dudes. Even though the classes do not have the talent they used to.

Exactly. Calipari has always done a solid job on the defensive end (of course it helps to have elite athletes with size), but his teams have always left something to be desired on the offensive end. With exception of a few that were too skilled to fail.

But yeah, he's not evolving well either.

He's also never really been known for strategy or adjustments.

Bennett went from getting blown out by a 16 seed to winning it all the next year. I don't think he magically learned how to coach in one year. We see huge swings in tourney performance all the time.

I think the biggest difference has been the lack of Davis/Wall types. Take Davis off the 2012 team, and they probably don't look much different than a lot of his recent teams.

I listen to KSR daily. You should have heard it the day after former UK forward. Brice Hopkins dropped 29/23 for Providence.😙

Just wait until when UL beats them Saturday.... 🤯 🤯
Unfortunately we are too bad to beat just about anyone. If we have a shooting game like we did against WKU we could keep it close maybe. This Louisville team is historically bad.

Even our 9-16, NIT teams kept it close. Louisville would love to be 9-16 this year....
UK has forgotten how to score. Clog the paint is the recipe to beat UK.

“By the end of the year we’re playing as well as we have all year, including last year with a chance to win the national title, but it’s one-and-done,” he said.

“How about if it were best-of-3, how many would we have? Or a best-of-7, how many national titles?” Calipari asked. “How about this one? How about if I was a little selfish and got these kids stay two or three years? But that’s not what this is. We’re here.”

😂

Sounds like to me he has checked out.

Cal was just fine with strategy and X's and O's but his greatest strength to me was how well he got his elite young talent to play so well together. He took all these huge egos and uber talented kids and got them to bust it and work hard on both ends of the court and got them to do it pretty quickly. Not sure why but that doesn't seem to be happening quite as well as it used to.

I don't even understand what he means with the make them stay two or three years stuff. How much power does he think he has, lol. Players don't GAF how long a coach wants them to stay.

Its call horse money. One player is making 3 million plus for 6 months work in college. Some NBA vets dont make 3 mil

He has some kind of control on a few of them. Collins was a top 10 recruit and still never gets any playing time, those types of players never stay and transfer out.
