Yeah, yeah...USA isn't in it, so who cares. Italy isn't either, so we can make fun of them. I know there is still some interest on here, though. Group stage starts in about 2 weeks.

Who do you got winning? Who are you rooting for since we aren't in it?

If Germany makes the semis, I'll be in Germany at the time, cheering them on.

Have to think Germany is the favorite. South American teams struggle away from home, and Germany is Europe's best team IMO

Got $500 on it so I'll be interested. My buddy and I drafted all the teams and set up a point structure so every game counts. I'll have fun watching.

I don't know if any of you guys remember these, but there were some cleats that had interchangeable uppers with different country's colors (or colours if applicable). My brother had a pair of those, and played with USA on one foot, and Germany on the other.

Germany, France, Brazil, and Argentine are the favs, I'd think.
I could also see Belgium go far.

Ya know it is funny. I was totally hating that the US whiffed on getting in but have a different perspective on it now. With the bitter reality that our best player will not get world cup experience this cycle there are some upsides. After this cycle there was always going to be a huge turnover on the team. The team was simply aging/getting old so only a handful of players would return for the next cycle anyways and the team was probably not good enough to go very far. So what we have now is a situation where a ton of young players can come in a gain valuable national team experience against top competition as they schedule pre-tournament friendlies with teams that will be in the world cup. This experience and the ability to see so many young guys on the pitch might pay big dividends as the next wave of talent come through the system. I watched them play a pretty pathetic Bolivian squad the other night with almost all really young guys (that are all mostly coming up through European club systems) that looked to be a nice backbone for the future. The jump start of these kids playing together against top competition internationally will be interesting to watch. Not to mention many of the fellas have been playing together in the U17 and U23 squads for a bit and those teams have done pretty well.

Maybe I am overly optimistic but I see a silver lining and I think it iss likely we were bumped in the group stages anyways.

Same. Trying to get interested in the sport so the whole team is in the EPL which is what I'd like to pay attention to moreso.

I'll pull for England because my roots have been traced there. Second team will be Colombia because one of my best friends is from there and he is really fired up for it. I mean stoked

Do you remember that in the '94 WC, England and France were absent?

Yea but they have one WC each and yea I recall England has long been a disappointment on the world stage TBH for country with what was for many years was the best league in the world, and is still top 2 or 3. The Netherlands with three finals and a 3rd place and Italy with 4 championships, 2 second place finishes and a 3rd place. I guess both have been in slow decline so it should not be a huge surprise given Italy has not made it out of group play either of the last 2 WCs. The Netherlands on the other hand were 3rd place last WC and 2nd in 2010. Italy performed well at the last Euros though. I think a lot of that can be attributed to Conte and great defense from the Juve back 3 and Bufon having such a great understanding of one another from playing together for so long.

Not completely sure that is true. France missed it in 90 and 94 then won it in 98. Missing it is not always a curse if it allows you to develop players. See my post above about the youth coming up.
