Lincoln Riley has turned two backup QBs into Heisman winners , will he do the same for Jalen Hurts.....?

At Bama Hurts had the reputation of being a mediocre passer. Lincoln will have to dramatically improve Hurts passing for Hurts to win the Heisman. But Riley has the reputation for being the QB guru, as well as being the offensive genius all the NFL teams are now trying to copy.

Hurts will definitely be better under Riley. But with sunshine being down at Clemson, I don't think he will be able to take a big enough step to win the Heisman. Just too many other top caliber players this year hurts will be pitted against.

The interesting thing to consider is what happens if Hurts DOES become a Heisman contender?

How many Heismans before people start chalking it up to the system and not the actual player? Could it end up back firing in the long run?

I'm not saying it will or should happen. But I guarantee many in the media will start framing that argument.

Yes the kid at Clemson is good and will be the early co-favorite along with Tua......but I think Riley can transform Hurts into a good passer and Riley will reshape the offense take maximize Hurts effectiveness ....

Remember last year Tua lead until the CCG when Kyler looked great and avenged his only loss and Tua looked bad....things change the week of the CCG....

I think the concept you raise will depend on the effectiveness of Hurts’ long ball and his overall accuracy, at Bama both were mediocre at best. If Hurts has a good long ball and is accurate with a high completion percentage and high QBR then that documents a transformation into an outstanding QB, after previously being a game manager with average skills....

Also that argument loses it reference point when you look beyond Hurts, next up is either Mordecai or Rattler both blue chip QBs.....

Hurts has the chance to put up crazy numbers in that offense though. It’ll def be interesting to watch.

The Heisman has become a PR contest, no offense to Hurt, Lawrence or Murray but Haskins at Ohio State put up equal to better numbers then the above mentions in the categories where it counted against at times better opposition but never considered for Heisman so this year if Hurt gets his team to the dance I would consider it a win.

Hurts was SEC Offensive Player of the Year in 2016. Riley isn't getting a project.

If Riley can get him to follow through with his checkdowns, then it will be a huge improvement. That was his biggest problem at Bama. His instinct to just run with the ball when his first look was covered. He was extremely impatient. Luckily he can run. But that was a big reason why he was passed up by Tua.

He will have to top or match the stats of Baker and Kyler. I’m not sure that’s possible.

Accuracy especially the long ball accuracy will be critical, and Lincoln will have to work some magic for that to be Heisman caliber accuracy....

I think Hurts definitely will be hugely efficient in moving the team down the field from the first game on.... I think by the end of season the Oline will have gelled . they are all blue chippers that have developed their way into the lineup and are actually larger than last years Oline so at the critical end of season time Hurts should have time to make downfield throws......

We will see, but the voters look carefully at the end of season....

As long as Baker and hopefully, Murray. Keep playing well in the NFL. That argument gets shutdown.

That is definitely the key IMHO. If Murray does well in the NFL, I think that's a strong counter argument.

He already was a heisman prospect. Will he win it? Probably not, but my guess he finishes top 5.

Feels like not enough people are talking about the runaway front runner in Ian Book. You have to be under 6 foot these days to win a Hesiman. Read a book.

Jalen got significantly better throwing in 2018. I think he will be a candidate.

He will have a big year at OU.

    My preseason picks would be:

    -Trevor Lawrence
    -Tua Tugavailoa
    -Justin Herbert
    -Travis Etienne
    -Jake Fromm
    -Deandre Swift

That’d be my top 6. If I thought a WR actually had a chance I’d put Jerry Jeudy, Justyn Ross and Ceedee Lamb in there somewhere as well.

Fields is the wildcard this year. Ohio State has enough talent their QB is always going to put up numbers.

From a media perspective, it’ll be a two horse race between Lawrence/Tua until they decide to change the narrative.

I think it's a possibility. Hurts improved last year, and could improve more under Riley. I wish him luck. That said, I voted no, just because of the odds.

Is part of the offensive genius getting scored on non stop to inspire the offense to play harder and go for explosive plays so you don't get blown out by 4 touchdowns?

Probably not just from "Sooner QB fatigue". Add in some serious contenders in Lawrence, Tua and a few others, and the likelihood diminishes.

Expect Hurts to have a great year and lead Oklahoma to a playoff appearance but I think Lincoln Riley will ease him into the offense in the first quarter of season where he will have super efficient, but not eye popping stats.

No chance. Hurts is just not a great QB. Sure he can run around and keep it fun but when it comes time to be a true QB and pass from the pocket, he ain’t got it. Never has.
I do not think that Oklahoma will win 10 regular season games this year. I think the loss of the offensive line will be tough to replace this quick. Oklahoma may have had the best offensive line the past couple of years and they lost a lot of starts and continuity from that. You don’t just plug and play on the o-line at that level. They lost some really elite O-Linemen. Also, the loss of Marquise Brown is huge. I’m not sure people realize how good that fella was. It would have been great to see him at full strength against Alabama, I feel like Oklahoma would have had a chance.
    Oklahoma is 9-3 this year.

Oklahoma returned their best offensive lineman in center Creed Humphrey, have the best offensive line coach in the country, and are loaded with talented depth. Once they gel, Oklahoma will have a top 10 offensive line.

Normally I would agree with you on the importance of returning starts on the line but I'm just not panicking all things considered.

If he does, all it will do is bring Oklahoma's past heisman winners even more into question than they already are (and the Heisman is already a joke nowadays anyway - probably since Ingram got it over 5 more deserving players). Jalen isn't a backup QB who never got a shot to show what he can do. We know what kind of player he is. He is a good quarterback and a good leader, but is not elite.

I don't believe Riley can work miracles (evidenced by Kyler getting humiliated by Bama last year when they were still trying). Oklahoma QBs tend to be pretty good, but get highly inflated stats by playing flag football. What could Trevor Lawrence or Tua do if they only played a couple teams in the top 70 in defense?

Good chance he will be a contender, but I don't see him WINNING it. Possibly a finalist though, it will be fun to watch him at Oklahoma and I'm excited about Kelly Bryant at Mizzou.
