Why does the university of Kansas….

It’s actually Kansas University just like it says. Not sure where you get your information.

Refer to themselves as the KU instead of UK?
It seems to be a thing from the old Big 8 teams:

OU - University of Oklahoma
CU - University of Colorado at Bolder
KU - University of Kansas
NU - University of Nebraska
MU - University of Missouri

They're all otherwise "University of" Then you had the 3 other schools that University came last.

Iowa State University
Kansas State University
Oklahoma State University

I had never noticed/thought about that.

Very interesting.

When the school was first established, and began plying sports, students found it easier to rhyme words with "KU", instead of "UK"; Every class made up a class song. Lots of rhyming, singing, etc, etc.... and "Good Ol' KU" caught on...Eventually students, faculty and alumni agreed to, "Rock Chalk, Jayhawk, GO KU", and that was that....

ANd that concludes today's history lesson.

Next week: The Origin of Rock Chalk Chant, early school colors, and that damn bird.....

Well, the latter three have "State University" in their names. You wouldn't want to be "State University of Kansas", or "SUK", now, would you?

The pattern doesn't seem to be limited to schools that were part of the old Big 8, but does seem to be a regional one. The University of Tulsa refers to itself as "TU", and the University of Denver refers to itself as "DU".

I also think schools might just go with the acronym that differentiates them from other schools that might have already existed.
