Why did fsu chicken out of joining the SEC?

Think of all those good games you haven't seen due to the lack of testicular fortitude in Tally. Sad.

Also, had fsu manned up back in 1992, UF could have scheduled intersectional opponents in their place. But as we all know, fsu was just too scared.

St. Pete Times, 9/17/90, page 10C.

"I think we made a wise decision and we have more flexibility. When your in the SEC you can't afford to play a good non-conference schedule. Playing in the ACC we can play a Notre Dame , Miami and Florida. There's six teams in the SEC that can win the conference championship, that’s a negative rather than a positive. I want to win national Championships".

    L. A. Times, 9/20/90, section C9.

"Florida State Coach Bobby Bowden preferred the ACC to the SEC for the last reason. No team, he reasoned, wins a national championship with an 8-3 record, which was a distinct possibility in the ultracompetitive SEC. In fact, LSU's [Joe Dean] revealed that Florida State was willing to join the SEC only if the Seminoles didn't have to play Auburn and Alabama in the same season. The league declined."

    http://pqasb.pqarchiver.com/latimes...c=COLLEGE+FOOTBALL+/+GENE+WOJCIECHOWSKI+Flori

"We were invited and they thought automatically we would join them, but we had applied for 30 years and they wouldn't take us," Bowden said Saturday in an interview with the Dothan (Ala.) Eagle before an event in southern Alabama. "We had our opportunity to go ACC, SEC or Big East. We had a couple of offers."

Due in large part to the ACC's academic and basketball reputations, FSU administrators decided to take their programs to that conference, Bowden said. On July 1, 1991, the Seminoles officially were ACC members.

    http://articles.orlandosentinel.com...ida-state-sec-20110814_1_fsu-sec-bobby-bowden

"I think Alabama has a tougher time," Bowden said at a pre-banquet news conference. He was referring to the strength of the Southeastern Conference, which has won six consecutive national championships.

"You've got too many good teams," Bowden said. "I don't know how you keep winning in that league. It only takes one slipup and you're out.

    http://www.al.com/sports/index.ssf/2012/03/bobby_bowden_thinks_sec_may_be.html

In an interview that will air Sunday morning at 9 a.m. ET on the SiriusXM show College Sports from All Angles with Jack Arute, Arute asks ex-FSU head coach Bobby Bowden what his message would be to his former school in regards to future conference affiliation. His response? In essence, get your football program in better shape and get back to ruling the ACC before even thinking about moving to a higher-quality football conference.

"My message would be stay in the ACC," Bowden told Arute in a transcript provided by SiriusXM. "Do you want to win a National Championship at Florida State? You've got a better chance in the ACC than you have in the Big 12, or even the SEC.

"You say, 'Well, gosh, they're much stronger in those conferences.' Yeah! They beat up on each other and you can't hardly get there. You know what? Florida State, wait 'til you get good enough to rule the ACC then you start looking for someplace to jump. But my opinion? They should stay right where they are."

    http://collegefootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/05/17/bobby-bowdens-message-to-fsu-stay-in-the-acc/
That left Florida State, Miami and South Carolina vying for the second invitation. Florida State was clearly the SEC's first choice. The major roadblock was scheduling. On August 3, Bobby Bowden admitted to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, "I like to win games, and I can't think of a tougher place to do that than the SEC." Under the proposed division alignment, Florida State would face Florida, Auburn and Alabama every year, which raised objections from FSU Athletic Director Bob Goin. "Most conferences have got two really strong programs," Bowden continued, "but top to bottom there isn't one close to the SEC." Another report, by Mark Maske of theWashington Post, suggested Florida State refused to be in the same conference as Florida because the Gators "once fostered an SEC blackballing of the Seminoles." In 2001, a Florida Times-Union retrospective quoted a FSU booster as saying, "There was quite a bit of feeling that we didn't want to be entrapped; a feeling that among some fans that if we go into [the SEC]…we'd be kind of a stepchild."

Bowden had a great plan. Make FSU an accommodating environment for the best athletes and stay away from the SEC.

    Florida State sounds smart.
Florida could have had 5 NC if they were in another conference.

Clemson is doing it to UofSC
Florida State did it to Florida.

SEC is only great if you are weak and need to hide behind a conference.
Schools like Clemson, Texas and Florida State are alphas.

Because like it is now, the ACC was a joke back then. The only thing that's changed is it's Clemson destroying the others and building a dynasty.

That Noles have had to suffer through decades of what passes for football in the ACC is their punishment. They consigned themselves to the kiddie table and there they stay.

Don't need a table when you are King.

Alabama is your King. The entire SEC bows down to Bama while they are kicking you in the face.

Bama's historic run is impresive, especially since it's not in a one team conference. That said Florida has won two national titles in the new millennia, how many has your team won?

As far as our lil bro at the kiddie table, it is what it is.

I guess this settles the conference debate.

    We have the following tiers:

    P1: SEC
    p4: Bigs, Pac, and ACC
    G5

FSU was going to dominate whatever conference they joined anyways.

They were already dominating the rest of college football.

FSU joined the ACC due to the superior academics. They wanted to be surrounded by schools that shared the same values (academics, morals, etc.)

It is pretty much an one team conference now and that team really isn't great anymore.
    What about Georgia?
They let a team who loss to Maryland push them around.

What about Georgia? I've been hoping they'll win something for decades as I'm tired of having to convince people they are a decent opponent. What about your team? Do you have one? How many national titles have they won in the new millennium?

There was no need to get caught up in SEC politics when they were already kicking SEC ass. They kicked SEC ass when they were independents and kicked SEC ass while in the ACC. Case closed

Maybe they wanted to be able to leave the state and play ranked teams?:)

Or maybe they just wanted to be associated with the juggernaut that Bobby knew Clemson would one day be. Iron sharpening iron, etc.

Besides, what basketball school doesnt want to be part of THE premier roundball league in the country.

And not just a 1 trick pony conference. I mean, people have to ask themselves, "Does your conference reign as both Football and Basketball Champions at the same time?"

Lots of people need to face reality and just ACCept the supremacy staring them in the face. I think that SEC speed is slowing down their reaching this inevitable conclusion.

I still think FSU would be a great fit for the Big 12. I think OU and FSU would be a good rivalry to build up. Also their style of play would be a good fit. (Yes I know they're down right now, but that won't last).

I was in favor of joining the SEC at the time. I really enjoyed our rivalry with Auburn. But looking back I think it worked out wonderfully.

We still play the best the SEC has to offer most years. We got to enjoy a national non-conference schedule and I made wonderful memories with my dad in South Bend, LA, Norman, and Boulder. We kept our rivalry with Miami. We enhanced our rivalry with Clemson. And I’ve seen incredible talent on the hardwood roll through Tally and been to multiple ACC Tournaments—which for someone who enjoys college basketball as much or more than college football, this has been fantastic.

The only thing I wish was that we played Auburn a bit more frequently.

Had FSU not joined the ACC the ACC might be a G conference today. Without FSU the Big East is a lateral move, VT and Miami wouldn't have had any reason to join a dying conference. FSU being the only competitive ACC team for a quarter of a century litterly left them to carry the conference on their backs.

But had FSU joined the SEC they wouldn't have any national championships. They seem very compfortable knowing they took the coward's route. That's FSU.
