As an IU fan, its really easy to list 3 quickly...

1st. Handing out sweet sixteen rings...and actually treating them like they were superbowl rings

2nd. Treating the "Watford shot" like it was the second coming of Jesus Christ. They literally had a picture of that shot posted anywhere they could put it. Even the popcorn boxes weren't immune to it.

3rd. Cutting down the nets AFTER they just lost, bad. At that moment, all they had guaranteed was a share of the BIG title. They actually almost lost to Michigan in there next game which would have caused a 3 way tie I believe.

Actually, now that I think of it, all the embarrassing moments I can think of all involved Crean being the head coach. That actually explains a hell of a lot!

Classic Crean moments right there. RollLaugh
I was so glad UK lost to Vandy in the 2012 SECT title game just so IU couldn't say they were the only team to beat the national champs. Would've never heard the end of that one, even though UK escorted IU out of the NCAAT.

I can’t really think of one off hand. Duke has a lot of badass traditions like the cheer cheats and Everytime We Touch but doesn’t do a lot of public stunts. Thank God.

IMO, this was Creans biggest downfall---He continue to treat the job as a rebuilding project, years after the fact. When a coach is saying, "well look where we were at, when I got here..."---8 years after the fact............Well, this is the type of shit you get.

So glad he is gone. So, so glad...

Kansas State tops them all. The ****ing power towel and promo video is literally the bottom of the barrel

Aside from the Crean tenure, I cannot think of anything. But damn----he more than made up for it.

I meant to include things the fanbase might have done during a celebration.

Lol the night he gave out the sweet sixteen rings I had been arguing with a ky fan about IU still being a blueblood even though they had been horrible for so long. However, once he popped up the article about the rings....it really killed any possible argument I might have had lol

I always thought his biggest downfall was a complete lack of coaching abilities?.

TBH, I saw no issue with that. Program had been down, and at the time, was a mere one year removed from a 22 loss season; that was preceding by a a 25 and 20 loss seasons. So to an extent, I get it.

Cmon Borden. Five time national champs don’t give out sweet 16 rings and if you do you don’t have a ceremony.

I was super pissed after the Watford shot but looking back on it that’s probably the best thing that could have happened for that team along with losing to Vandy in the SEC-T championship

Why? What Indiana did , and what they were doing(then), is totally irrelevant. Its no different than UK handing on Elite 8 rings. Do 8x National champions do that? Do they retire the jersey's of 5 guys who never made it passed an Elite 8? WHo are we to decide what a school should or should not do? Look, no reason to turn this into another "IU/UK" thingy. It wasn't the greatest idea. And I never said I agreed. I just said, I understand why. Plus, its Tom Crean. I doubt any other coach does that. Or maybe they do----IDK. Rather its right or wrong is merely opinion.

Pearl's UT basketball hung Sweet 16 banner, and some others hang Helm's banners next to actual championship banners.

I've said many times that the loss to vandy was the best thing that could have happened to UK that year. I was eating dinner with some friends at this hole in the wall sports bar, and the moment it went across the screen that they had lost....I knew immediately they were going to win the championship that year. I can't stand UK, but it was painfully obvious that they were hands down the best team in the nation. The only hope I had of them not winning it, is if they lost the desire to work hard because they had gotten so used to rolling through the season.

Don't get me wrong, even without the loss they were probably going to win it anyways. But, that loss woke them up at the perfect time. I'm sure they constantly heard from the coaches that they can lose. But, since their 19 year olds who have just steamrolled through the season, it's not unbelievable if deep down they had started to think they were unbeatable.

On a side note, I know I'm biased, but I still say those were hands down the 2 best games that year. Honestly, i don't think any other game was even remotely close imo

And I see no issue with that. And really, a Helms banner during its time, was an actual National championship. SO honoring that to me, is no issue. Just like with CFB.

They were really great games. Seriously great games.

Also, you bring up a great point about losing the SECT tournament championship. In '95-'96 we were also dominate, but lost to Miss St. in the same fashion as Vandy, then proceeded to basically cruise through the NCAAt.

Should have been a final four game

The biggest pushback to your argument is that he also handed out sweet sixteen rings the 2 other times they made it to that round. If it had strictly been that year, I could understand your argument. But, it was being done in later seasons also.

I do feel had IU not been in UK's bracket, they go to the Final Four. IU may have been the best team UK played in the entire tourney. Maybe the season. That was a really good Indiana team.

Don’t you just love the posters that always point out other teams “so called” mistakes?
Biggest mistake UNC made was the year they changed that beautiful jersey & put the big Interlocking NC on the chest.

I understood in 2012. After that---Meh, not so much. But again----coaches do what coaches do.

Who gives a shit in all honesty? The other times were also for B1G championships that also went to the sweet 16

So the ceremony separates the two? Ok---But by how much? I mean are you "cool" with an 8 time National champion, handing out regional runner-up rings?

Imo this is the real reason it's so hard to go undefeated. You're dealing with 18 and 19 year old kids who start to think their invincible and can't be beat. I could be wrong, but I can't remember many teams who won the tournament riding a 20+ game win streak?. It's too hard for fully developed adults to remain focused for that long....let alone teenagers.

I also think it's harder now to go undefeated then back when IU did it. The reason I say this us because in order to do it, you have to have a coach that the team fears. The coach has to have absolute control over their minds to prevent complacency. Love him or hate him, but no one can say that Knight didn't have complete control over his teams back then. Those teams literally feared pissing him off.

Nowadays, I don't think its possible for a coach to be like that anymore. Someone's going to get their feelings hurt and tell mom whose then going to get a lawyer.

LOL...I just spoke on that. I think they were, at the time, the two best teams. Indiana was really good.
UNC was really good that year as well. They played us really close @ Rupp that year, and a rematch was probably likely until their player (too lazy to look it up) went down during the tournament.

....a whole bunch of IU fans who thought it was something Purdue, or a mid major would do....gave a shit about it. It was a Bush league type of move that a supposed blue blood shouldn't be doing. I could at least understand what Borden said earlier about the first sweet 16. But, it was embarrassing as hell and I'm actually shocked that you didn't mind it?
