Alabama's Tua Tagovailoa says he would have transferred if he didn't play in title game

    • ESPN

Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa said Thursday that he would have transferred from Alabama if he didn't play against Georgia in the College Football Playoff National Championship.

Updating post-spring position battles for top 25 teams
Alabama is like several other Top 25 teams after spring practice -- still needing to decide on a starting QB.

Not only did Tagovailoa take over for struggling starter Jalen Hurts to start the second half, but his 41-yard touchdown pass to DeVonta Smith on the second possession of overtime gave the Crimson Tide a 26-23 win and the championship.

Tagovailoa reflected on his thought process at the time Thursday when speaking at his former intermediate school in Ewa Beach, Hawaii.

"Even throughout my football season, I wasn't the starter," Tagovailoa told the students, according to Hawaii News Now. "I wanted to leave the school. So I told myself, if I didn't play in the last game, which was the national championship game, I would transfer out. If I gave in, I don't think I would have seen the end blessing of where I am now."

Tagovailoa's thoughts leading up to the championship game weren't new; he told the students he had first considered transferring earlier in the season.

"I called my dad and asked him if my offer to the University of Southern California was still available," Tagovailoa told the students. "I wanted to leave. I told my dad I wanted to go to a school where I thought it'd be easier for me and wouldn't challenge me so much."

Tagovailoa told the seventh and eighth graders his initial query about transferring wasn't well received by his parents, who told him he had to push through, according to Hawaii News Now.

Good lord, he was a true freshman! He should be so fortunate. Most don’t at that age and definitely not at that level. A little sense of self entitlement there, no? The better answer would have been:

“I was blessed to get such an opportunity so early in my collegiate career to prove myself. I’d like to thank the coaches for giving me the shot and look forward to further showcasing my potential.”

I just wonder how much influence he had in Saban’s decision to put him in? And in no way do I mean that as a bad thing.

I’m sure most Bama players want to transfer out once they realize how 3rd world Bama is.

That's the trade off if you go to bama. If you go there you sit behind other elite guys.

You can go to a lot of other schools and play right away. It's up to the kids and what they value.

Everyone else saw that he said USC would be an easier system to run right? And wouldn't be as challenging as it is in Bama.

I suspect over half the roster has considered transferring. Playing at Bama is a grind. Between Cochran working you like a dog and competing with plenty of other stats for playing time could weigh on anybody.

Of course, watching Jalen against UGA in the 1st half was painful. I can’t imagine how it felt got Tu’a. At some point, he had to be thinking “geez, just throw the bleeping ball. You have THREE open guys. But NOOOOOOOOO, it’s Ridley if he has 8 steps or run like you just grabbed a rib off Phil Fulmer’s plate.”

Kiffin said back in January that Tua had apparently been outperforming Hurts for sometime in practice. Tua is the better QB so I really don’t blame him for feeling that way.

Sounds to me like his parents are a strong influence, and he was talking about not giving into easy temptation to quit and hang in there and reap the rewards.

Welcome to the board first of all.

Clearly you epitomize the stereotype of Bamers - backwoods uneducated tshirt bandwagoners. Learn basic grammar if you want to be taken seriously.

It’s also a sign he is committed to the program that his brother committed this spring.

I don't blame him. Hurts is garbage. If I knew I was ready and better than someone hurting my team then id feel the same way. Hurts is a bitch and Clemson won a national title because of that loser.

    Not necessarily true.

Bama played 13 Freshmen this year, and a few started.

He did think about it. His parents shut it down pretty quickly. Who knows what happens if he didn't play in the Title Game. All Alabama fans are glad he did though.
