And here are my top 25 transfer recruiting classes. SEC is killing it. They've got 5 schools in the top 10. I've listed the players in the order of importance for each school.

I’m absolutely biased but I think Tyson Watson is being underrated. The guy had multiple good versus high major teams and was the DPOY in his conference. He played high majors 4 times and only didn’t play at least decently in a game he got injured in and didn’t play in the second half. 27 against a decent UNC team.

Transfers are really unpredictable though. He could be garbage. I’m just more familiar with him.

Maybe. But, a lot of the guys that "transfer up" struggle. Two guys from the Big Ten that I recall in recent years are Jaaron Simmons (Michigan, from Ohio) and Mark Alstork (Illinois, from Wright State). Their games did not transition to the next level. Some guys, like Carlik Jones, do more than okay. Extremely hard to project. Admittedly, I can look at the numbers and see that Walker has a much higher ceiling than Simmons or Alstork. I don't think my ranking is a great disservice, though. I have Walker in front of a lot of talented guards. A top 50 transfer this year is going to be very, very valuable. Could easily make one of the all-conference teams.

Thanks, and you might like this.

Pretty good list. Similar teams to mine. I didn't have Oklahoma State in my top 25, but they were close. He definitely needs to include Arizona State and Oregon, though. Quincy Guerrier just committed today, so I can understand that omission. But, how he doesn't have Arizona State on there is a head-scratcher, IMO.

In all fairness, you are far more familiar with the National transfer scene than I am. I see Walker as pretty boom or bust, either he’s going to be a solid PG or a bench player.

I think a top 50 transfer this year is far different than previous years. I should have accounted for that more.

I have him slotted in as the starting point guard for MSU. He should have a good season. And yeah, transfer market this year is absolutely obscene. Already a 58% increase in the total number of players in the portal. There's a good chance that 30-60 of these transfers will make my preseason top 150 players.

Smith and Brown took Michigan from 7th or 8th finish in the B1G, to an elite 8. Pretty sure many teams took notice. Plus, isn’t Jones ranked much higher than Walker? In the past transfers were desperation pickups, now it’ll be different. Power 5 teams will let lesser teams develop, and then poach those players because the NBA does it to power 5 schools.

Great stuff. A little surprised to see Richmond at #25, but I suppose a lot of his value is on potential

Also, I hope MSU picks up a 4 or 5 in the transfer portal still. I want MSU to be better. Illinois on the other hand, I can’t wait till they remember that their best run under BU is 1 B1G 10 tournament Championship, and round of 32 exit, lol! If Kofi returns they’re the best team in the B1G. That’s what their fans say, but they’ve literally probably had the worst off season, even worse than Iowa’s. Nebraska even out recruited them. Indiana fans, and Illinois fans are the worst when it comes to present, and future of their teams. Hell for a long time I thought MSU fans were arrogant, but at least they made noise in the tournament, and won stuff. Now they’re real, and don’t say, remember Magic Johnson. Illinois, and Indiana fans need to wake up. Michigan fans shut up when we got the death penalty. Had to watch a slow and steady rebuild, and each coach has been better than the last, and at the end of the day BU is an ok coach, with a shady coaching past, and Woodson is old! Last decade is MSU, Michigan, OSU. Wisconsin, or Purdue #4 in that time. Tired of both fan bases on other sites every year claiming this is the year, and Indiana, and UCLA aren’t blue bloods any more. Kentucky, has 4 more years still in that category, unless they make noise again. Blue bloods should be determined by 10 year periods. Gonzaga is a blue now for me. Villanova is, Baylor with 4 more years will be, and I’m sure I’m forgetting a few.

Blue blood is based on historical success not just recent trends. It’s the reason we’re still a blue blood in football despite sucking for nearly the last 20 years

Jayden Gardner way too low. He's a beast. Here's what Kelvin Sampson had to say about him.

My favorite comparison of Michigan fans vs. Illinois fans would be the majority of Michigan fans and alumni didn’t want to claim the 2013 national championship because Louisville had to disqualify that season. Majority of Illinois fans and alumni declared themselves as regular season B1G champs this year because Michigan had a 3 week pause. F*cking cry me a river, and BU was a complete dousche about it. Yes I know how to spell, but for obvious reasons I’ll let it stand. Illinois won because Isiah Livers got hurt in the first 10 minutes of that game, and arguably the best offensive player/defender, but Illinois the juggernaut, lost in the second round to a team I remember 3 years ago when Michigan beat them in the Final 4. I also remember the only team in the B1G to make it past the sweet 16 this year was Michigan. The only team that’s been to 4 straight in the B1G is Michigan. Oh yeah, Michigan did make it that far with their best player watching. The Illini were full strength right? Indiana with Mata helping Woodson, all the sudden is going to win a NC? Will they even be ranked at the end of next year? Looks down at notes, nope, they won’t be, but they once again, like Illinois is in the B1G claim National relevancy again. I’m sure neither make it to the sweet 16 anytime soon. BU isn’t getting great recruits, transfers are ok, and Indiana is all over the place. Indiana at least made a bad situation better, but this is the best it’ll be! Look at the recruits either actually have a chance at next year, they don’t look great, and Illinois doesn’t have a full staff to even help encourage visits in 2 weeks! Let alone I think both staffs will struggle developing players. I mean Indiana talks sh*t to Kentucky because they had a bad year, checks notes and Indiana has sucked for many more years, blue blood? Need to remind myself now Michigan is a blue blood in football because you know, the past, lol.

Blue blood is based on historical success not just recent trends. It’s the reason we’re still a blue blood in football despite sucking for nearly the last 20 years
And my argument would be that’s dumb. Blue bloods is only a relevant term in basketball. A decade at a time! The appropriate term should be dynasty in college basketball. Villanova, and Gonzaga maybe. That’s recently. Kentucky, Duke before then. North Carolina I guess, just don’t want to hurt feelings. Florida, MSU before that, but in the end who cares about things before I was born. Temple was a great basketball team, and I could careless, because I was born in 1980, and the first time I actually cared, even though my dad took me to Michigan football and basketball games was 1988. Even now, I only care about next year! Last year was fun to watch, but honestly I only care about tomorrow! I won’t forget about amazing games I was at, or watched, but it has nothing to do with winning games next year. Also fire Jim!

Guerrier to Oregon SmokinSmile
Huge, huge pickup. I feel like Guerrier has a great shot at being 1st Team All-Conference, and a decent shot at making one of the All-American teams. Harmon and Guerrier are both in my top 30. I think the Ducks will be just fine this year.

Smith and Brown were highly coveted transfers, for sure. Brown was a top 50 kid in high school and he was fairly productive at Wake. Smith put up monster numbers in the Ivy League. Just hard to compare the numbers of a mid-major guy and someone who's on a team with 6 other top 100 kids. The blueprint for watching players successfully transfer up is Baylor. MaCio Teague, Adam Flagler, and Freddie Gillespie all showed they can compete at a high level. At the same time, a lot of these guys really struggle to compete against superior talents. I think I saw somewhere that Ryan Wooldridge (Gonzaga, from North Texas) and Jake Toolson (BYU, from Utah Valley) were the only players who grad transferred up in 2019, and averaged double-digits in 2020. Macio Teague wouldn't have counted, as he sat out for a year in 2019. At any rate, there are diamonds in the mid-major markets, but they don't always pan out. When I'm evaluating mid-major guys, I value efficiency much more than raw numbers.

When I'm evaluating mid-major guys, I value efficiency much more than raw numbers.
I completely agree that Baylor did the best job at transfers 3 years ago, plus development, and system. I’m not sure after the typical 3 year gain they’ll ever repeat that amount of success again. I was only bringing up Smith, and Brown because your memory only brought up 2 failed big transfers. My memory easily reminded me of those 2 guys who won us a lot of games, and if Livers doesn’t get hurt during the Illinois game, I think we beat Gonzaga, and play Baylor. I know I’m speculating, but I honestly believe Livers was our best player, and Smith was the most important player. When did the Ivy League not qualify as a mid major? Are they lower than that now? Wake forest should be considered a mid major, don’t you think? This isn’t the 90’s.

I must say if you intentionally left off a certain Georgia point guards destination to Kentucky, I’m fist bumping you through my phone now, but it looks like you tried to type in said team. Just a heads up, I’ve been waiting for some Kentucky fan to say something about it, but crickets.

Don’t worry devilz, apparently I’m the only one who read the entire list, have no complaints about the facts or data. Plus, you’ll have hell to pay at some point because you didn’t claim Duke had a chance at guys this year or next that are going to the G-League. Yet Kentucky fans think they’ll get them though, and because they hate coach K, maybe Kentucky fans are the crazy ones? Coach Cal has so many accusations, at 3 different schools, it amazes me. They must all be false, and coach K who coached at Army cheats? He’s got National Championships, and he cheats? Seems like if he cheated, he’d have more! Also, I’m so tired of every school saying they’ve got a chance with Flip when they don’t. It’s coach K’s relative. I believe his nephew? Please correct me if I’m wrong. Maybe another grandkid? On a side note My Dad’s cool story was his Freshman year at West Point, and coach K asked him to tryout. In the small school my dad went to in Northern Michigan he was a 6’1 point guard. They won the state championship his senior year, and he was named MVP of his team. He was proud that starting day 1, coach K started cutting people, and he didn’t get cut until day 5, 😂. Cool
Story, and the few pictures of it are pretty cool because who this man became. Coach Cal, Coach Self, Coach Smith, or Coach Walton? Nope, they never coached regular athletes, ever!

Did some Illini fan f*ck your mom when you were little and make you watch?

Nobody has brought them up in this entire conversation yet you have mentioned them twice already.

Illinois beat Michigan on their own home court by 20+ WITHOUT Ayo. And next year they will have almost that exact roster that beat you that night. So Illinois isn’t going anywhere. Expect to see them at/near the top of the conference for the foreseeable future. It shows that you are just a causal fan that doesn’t know what he’s talking about when you mention Nebraska and Iowa having better off seasons than Illinois when they added 3 4-star recruits at positions of need, along with a former top 50 recruit Omar Payne (transfer from Florida) to take over the backup center role since Giorgi graduated early. They also will be getting Austin Hutcherson, a D-III transfer, who is similar to Duncan Robinson. He is 6’6 and absolutely lights out from deep, but had back issues due to a car crash when he is was in high school. Difference is, he has the ability to put the ball on the floor and can play 1 thru 3 if he can stay healthy.

If Kofi is back Illinois will be one of the preseason top 3 teams. If not they will still be borderline top 25, but it will certainly be a step back from last season.

What? First I don’t need to rehash we won the B1G regular season, and beat Maryland 3 times young buck. Second if Kofi comes back almost nobody has you higher than 4th in the B1G this year. Yep that’s right Michigan, Maryland, Ohio State, and Purdue will all be better than Illinois. Third Nebraska has a better recruiting class than Illinois! 3 4-star recruits 😂. Let me tell you a causal story, from a casual fan, Howard just got Barnes out of Chicago, and Howard is best friends with Tai Streets, that’s why Howard went to Michigan. You know that right? The Irvin’s have played Illinois like a fiddle and are shady, but how many recruits will he actually bring Illinois if hired? Probably the same caliber you’re already getting. Which is enough to finish in the middle of the pack. And last, Duncan Robinson is a pro, with no history of injuries, and is like 7’ feet tall. Not 6’6. Please explain now Kofi comes back, and Illinois goes from 25 to top 3 team? I mean nobody has them top 10 with Kofi back, but what do I know, I’m just a casual fan. All those developmental players you just recruited without a staff means in 2 weeks they’ll develop by themselves? Nebraska out recruited you guys, 😂. You’re going to be at the top of the B1G, 😂. Please tell me one more joke as I’m giving you a brother rigggghhhtt now. Do me a solid, at least come at me with stuff other than D3 players with back injuries. Also, how many of those 4* players start? Better yet, does the D3 player with a back injury start?

P.S. it might be a sister, either way Illinois should make a sweet Sixteen when given a #1 seed period. Oh yeah, period, I shouldn’t have knocked up your mom, if I only planned this better. Like Shaggy once said, “Wasn’t me.” He probably should’ve also included that I mentioned other sites and forums about Illinois fans, and Indiana fans, only for you to crawl out the woodwork to confirm how much you guys suck! Try winning the B1G tournament back to back, and playing 5 games in 5 days! Instead you won playing 3 games, and made it to rd. 32. I mean Michigan made it 3 straight years to the B1G championship game, and won 2 of them. Also made a final 4, and National runner up, while Illinois won this year, you’ve got nothing left going forward! That’s how your mom tricked me, and why your new sibling wasn’t me!

I’m guessing you’re largely ranking based on potential. Otherwise, Bryce Thompson shouldn’t sniff the top 100. I personally don't even think highly of his potential. It's baffling to me that a shooting guard with a broken shot, average or below average handles and limited athleticism was a 5 star recruit. And yes, I thought this before he entered the portal. I'd assume he'll be a lot more productive in the future than he was as a freshman, but I don't see him becoming great.

I like KU's transfers. I think Yesufu is a little underrated by some. When he became the starting PG, he averaged 23/game and shot 47% from three. Scored 26 vs USC in the tourney and 6-11 from three.

I think Cam Martin could be a nice surprise. Hard to project a D2 player at this level, but he dominated D2 and shot 46% from three. I'd expect him to get a lot more open looks than he had at that level, so I think the shooting will translate. Not sure how he'll fare on defense.

Hard to say what impact Coleman-Lands will have. I could see him having a similar role to Isaiah Moss a few years ago. Instant offense off the bench. But I wouldn't be shocked if he's the starting 3 either, assuming Agbaji doesn't return.

I think KU won the lottery, Martin was a major pickup, and probably the best for a tournament bound team. I’d surprised if KU isn’t a top 10 team all year. KU laughing at Kentucky now, they got a scoring pg, and it’s the only thing KU needed to make them better.

Also, how old are you? Mom jokes are middle school material! You started your argument off with a mom joke, so now everyone reading this will take Illinois seriously? I’ll let Nebraska fans finish you off! Maybe the D3 player with a back injury will be more insightful because your 3 4* players are waiting for coaches to show up, and maybe coach. Oh, wait a minute, you are still trying to hire 2 more coaches, and outside Chester everyone is turning down your top dollar to stay put at places like Creighton. I mean the head coach didn’t say anything damaging for the program, but at top dollar you can’t even pull the assistant you want from there? Wow, maybe Illinois isn’t what you think of them? Self, Weber, and now Underwood. Non of these guys have checkered past? Illinois is the best, and they’ll be a the top of the B1G for years to come, right next to Indiana!

Jayden Gardner way too low. He's a beast. Here's what Kelvin Sampson had to say about him.

I believe my ranking is justified. He's a great scorer and has a lot of versatility on the offensive end. But, he's not the most efficient, and he's not a great defender. Here's how he ranks against the bigs ahead of him. These are the numbers, per 40 minutes.

bigs-stats.png

Out of of 11 players, here's how he ranks in some of the categories:

FG%- 10th
2P FG%- 11th
Rebounds- 9th
Blocks- 11th
Player Efficiency Rating (PER)- 11th

Being 1st Team All-Conference in the AAC has to count for something, of course. I have trouble getting past that player efficiency rating, though. It's way too low for a top-ranked big, and I think that's mostly because his shooting percentages are too low. He's still a good player. But, if he's going to be a top 10/15 transfer, he'll need to improve a lot, IMO. Fortunately, Tony Bennett is one of the best in the businesses, so it wouldn't be overly shocking to see Gardner improve a bit. His raw numbers will come down, undoubtedly, with a slower paced offense, and with more capable bodies around him. As of now, I like where I have him ranked and I believe the ranking has merit.

Great stuff. A little surprised to see Richmond at #25, but I suppose a lot of his value is on potential

Yep. Kadary Richmond is definitely based on potential. And there are a few others in there, as well. Namely, Walker Kessler, Marcus Bagley (wouldn't be surprised if he stays in the draft), Adam Miller, Pelle Larsson, Bryce Thompson, and Micah Peavy.

There are a lot more failed transfers than two. I was only bringing up two from the Big Ten in recent memory. Justin Pierce, Christian Keeling, Lamarr Kimble, Nate Sestina, Jaevin Cumberland, Seth Towns, Bryce Aiken, Terrell Brown, Kevin Marfo, Holland Woods, Charles Minelend, and Terrell Gomez are a few notable ones from the past two seasons. Yes, Yale is a mid-major. I was only saying formulating these rankings is tough because the mid-major guys have really gaudy numbers, but you don't know how that will translate when they play against tougher competition. And Wake is absolutely a power school. They play in the ACCC & they have 7 guys in the NBA. They'll be able to semi-frequently land top caliber recruits because high school kids care A LOT about a school's NBA pedigree.

I must say if you intentionally left off a certain Georgia point guards destination to Kentucky, I’m fist bumping you through my phone now, but it looks like you tried to type in said team. Just a heads up, I’ve been waiting for some Kentucky fan to say something about it, but crickets.

Haha didn't notice that. I'll have to revise that. He just committed this week, so I guess I simply didn't update that.

I’m sure I’m forgetting a few.

Here are UVA's numbers in the last 10 years.

264-72 (78.57 winning percentage)

137-42 in the ACC (76.54 winning percentage)

I would put those numbers up with any other program over the last 10 years. And we're doing it in the ACC. And we have a natty to go with it.

@hail2yourvictor please teach your boy what a paragraph is.
Don’t worry, going forward I’ll ensure proper post procedures:
1) Never not paragraph
2) Never misspell words, or move to quickly you forget one.
3) Are we suppose to include a thesis and conclusion?
4) Was I suppose to double space?
5) What are the other teachings you need others to do for you, that I must learn for a sports thread oh wise one from DePaul? See I’m not sure if I’m suppose to use comas anymore. do I even capitalize anymore? who knows fur shur? Atleast im spelling and punctuating corectly!

Like I said, I forgot a few. UVA’s only problem, and still is, outside the NC season, is you guys choke. Michigan’s is that we choke for NC title! For that matter, all the B1G does. In fact our network boast about Maryland last winning it for the B1G, yet they weren’t apart of the B1G when they won it. Go figure.

You're comparing apples to oranges with a lot of those guys. What would Gardner's numbers have looked like if he played at Yale or Eastern Washington? And of the guys on that list who played in a decent conference, who else was their team's best player and at the top of every opposing team's scouting report?

Does Gardner have areas where he needs to improve? Absolutely. Is he a top NBA prospects? Nope, not at his size and with his level of athleticism.

But what he has proven over three years playing against pretty good competition is that he's a damn good college player.

Anyway, always appreciate your effort on these lists, and the beauty is we'll find out in a few months when these guys get on the court with their new teams.

I've seen Atkinson and Groves play a few times. They're legit. I want to say Groves dropped 35 on Kansas in the tournament. And while he looks like a slow white dude, he's actually fairly agile, more so than Gardner, IMO. Atkinson is ridiculously efficient. He hasn't played in over a year, so he might be a little rusty.

This is debatable, for sure. I saw Jeff Goodman & CBS both have Gardner in the top 20. And that's fine. If Trey Murphy stays in the draft, UVA might be a fringe top 25 team. And with reduced minutes and a slower-paced offense, Gardner's numbers might be closer to resembling 14 points and 7 board. He's a good player, don't get me wrong. Just not convinced that he's elite where he would be strongly considered for All-American honors. I make evaluation errors all the time, and perhaps this is one more.

Plan B, figuratively, and realistically why’d you’re mom lie about being on the pill? Oh yeah, Purdue signed 2 4* better than any of your developmental 3. My advice, as a casual fan, is stop talking, Illinois is going to be garbage this year, and for many years to come. I pray you can claim victories again by just making the tournament. By the way, how many Illini are playing in the NBA right now? None, ok. That’s why you guys have been so good!
