I rarely start threads, mostly just content to add my two cents when I feel like I have something relevant to say.

But over my life there have been a lot of songs that get me a little misty. Bob Marley’s Redemption Songs being one of them. I saw him do it live at his last ever show at The Stanley Theater in Pittsburgh, not knowing how sick he was until maybe a month later. But it’s hard for me to listen to it.

So I was thinking about some other songs that give me that chopping onions feeling and decided to see who else has those kind of songs after I list another three of mine:

Can’t explain it, but I saw this film at the movies when it first came out, made me cry then and still does today

This one, I have trouble explaining but I guess it’s just the fact Linda was too sick to attend but mostly just the simple, heartfelt performance from Carrie Underwood, it’s just beautiful

This one needs no explanation. Simple kind of song, written and sung by a Simple Kind of Man

Came out right after my mom passed the other year. And just as my youngest got her first start in a theatrical performance doing Belle on Beauty and the Beast here in town. Still can't listen to it without tearing up. Seriously nails my mom perfectly between always taking pictures of everything, ready to drink a beer and hang out. Was the perfect mom.

Same here. Lovely song, but brings me to tears every time thinking about my Mom

And when I think about my Dad (he could have been Johnny’s twin at the end)

I first became aware of it in the late 60’s when Blood Sweat and Tears did a song called Variations on a Theme

It’s always been on of my favorite pieces of music.

I bought the sheet music for my daughters and I think one of them performed it in a recital.

Your knowledge of music blows me away though

I probably got you on Reggae, but you and a few others are astounding.

Thank you! I am a serious music fanatic. I would love you to teach me more about Reggae. I always dug those heavy grooves and the feeling behind this fabulous music. Whatever the song is about it is REAL. The politics, the sorrows of love, the innocence and practicality of living and loving. I love it!

It’s been my passion for over 40 years. I was fortunate to get involved in the music during its heyday, and got to meet, work with and even become close friend with most of the major artists of that time.

I’ll do a MikeyTheBlemblam Top 10 Favorite All Time Reggae songs thread sometime in the near future and would love to answer any questions and maybe tell some stories about those days.

I think it’s a Xmas song where the kid wants to buy his dying mom some new shoes to wear when she meets Jesus.

I was around Mouse a few times, but can’t say I knew him.

Quick story about Mouse. Before he became well known enough to actually tour internationally he was just another struggling artist with a few songs released locally. I think it was during the 1980 elections. Jamaica lost more people per capita during that election cycle than we did in Viet Nam. Anyway Mouse got caught in a house that was attacked by gunmen from the rival party. They killed everyone in the house but let him live because he was a musician.

Ah, Jimmy. Knew him fairly well back in the day. My friend Earl “ Chinna” Smith was really close to him, so I got to spend a lot of time around him.

I’m going to make a blanket statement that for me, it is an absolute truth, and I don’t say it lightly.

I just turned 67, and Jimmy Cliff is the nicest person I have ever known, famous or not.

If you want to understand what was going on in Jamaica, Netflix just released a Documentary called Who Shot The Sheriff, about the 1976 Assassination attempt on Bob Marley. I’m posting a trailer and the first voice you hear is my friend of forty years, Roger Steffens, the leading Marley Archivist in the world. Many more of my old friends from those days are in it also. It’s pretty good. Not great but if someone wasn’t there in those days it can give some understanding of what it was like.

Well worth the watch if you have Netflix

Don’t abuse children. If you have anger issues, I severely implore you to get help before it goes to far and is too late. There is some sort of domestic violence happening in one out of every three households.
