The topic of teams not giving a best effort or even "tanking" has been abundant in professional sports circles for years. Especially considering when better draft positions are at stake. Now, two Tennessee girls basketball teams have been banned from their postseason tournament for allegedly trying to lose the same game in order to avoid top seed Blackman, the No. 3 team in the MaxPreps Xcellent 25 national rankings. According to the Associated Press, Smyrna and Riverdale were fined $1,500 each Monday and placed on a year's probation by the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association. Smyrna (21-8) defeated Riverdale 55-29 on Saturday and was set to play Blackman. See tweets below with video from the game In a letter to school principals, TSSAA Executive Director Bernard Childress wrote that the teams "made a mockery" with intentional turnovers off various violations and missed free throws. The referee also reported he stopped play, ordering the coaches not to make a travesty of the game with a Smyrna player about to shoot at the wrong basket.
