With a hose down my nose. Small bowel obstruction and it was no fun. I watched a lot of tv, posted here a bit and suffered with that horrible NG tube. It’s the second time it’s happened and there’s no obvious reason it occurs according to the scans and GI docs. If you’ve never had that done I can assure you it’s as bad as it sounds. If you have, what steps have you taken to prevent it happening again. I’ve done everything they told me to do last time and it happened again. I’m glad it resolved without surgery but if someone with experience has a special diet I’d be all ears.

If you can find Diegorolltide I believe he had a GI issue awhile back. @LetsAllWhine has a medical background and he might be able to offer some advice.

I use to masticate at least 2 times a day when I was younger ... and then my mom told me I would go blind. :(

I dont have much experience in the matter, but would like to offer an opinion. Maybe you should consider ACV daily and at least two meals at Waffle House per week.

Hope you get better soon OP!

Seems like plenty of water & fiber would be part of a special diet.

Small bowel obstruction. CT scans with contrast done. No obvious reason for it. They tube you and hope that relieves the pressure and it fixes itself. Fortunately it did pretty quickly this time. The tube was in for about 30 hours. This happened before and I have a Gastroenterologist who just has me do mirilax every day, which I have done for the last four years. Apparently it just got kinked again. I don’t know what diet to try. My doc and the GI guy at the hospital just says the same thing. Avoid raw vegetables, nuts and things that are hard to digest. I’m just wondering if there’s anything else I can do

Sorry to hear. My advice, cut out red meat and bread for 8 weeks and see if you feel better. Any unspecified illness possibly related to diet sucks. Hope you get it figured out.

When they say obstruction is the blockage due to peristalsis?

I’m not sure, I’ll see if that’s in the papers they gave me. If not I’ll ask my doc on my follow up. I’m not a doctor so I’m not sure what that means.

Peristalsis is the movement the stomach and intestines make indepentdent of being attached to bones for contraction that allow food to move. And there are many reasons for obstructions, diet, certain drugs can make your GI tract sluggish, scar tissue from current or previous issues.
With it happening a 2nd time I would think its time to find out why, rather then just treating the symptoms until the next time it happens. Seeing a dietician would be helpful but even they would need to know your history and what the GI Docs suspect as well as list of Meds, including homeopathics.

Did they do a CT with contrast the first time it happened and was the obstruction in the same place, was there something similar both times in your diet, or meds?

I think so but different hospital this time. The diet is different now. Meds are the same, I just got home a couple hours ago and will be calling my regular doctors for follow ups tomorrow. I’ll definitely be pushing for more dietary instructions this time. I have been told that once it does happen it usually does again. I’d obviously like to avoid the third time by any means possible

I don’t see anything in the papers about peristalsis but I’m not looking at the CT report either.
You know they have said scar tissue could be a part of it. I had gall bladder removed before the first time but that was laparoscopic so maybe I haven’t paid that much attention to it. I don’t think there’s anything that can be done to change that either. Could that cause enough scar tissue being it was done that way? Thanks for the info man.

@DeputyDodge glad you’re back in the saddle. Sorry that FSU’s football team is so bad it’s preventing you from digesting food. I had a hard time keeping from puking last year myself during a few games.

Right now, I definitely wouldn’t do a high fiber diet or a veggie smoothie like I’ve seen some suggest.

If you’re having issues digesting food, the last thing you wanna do is eat foods that are hard to digest as it is until whatever problem you have is under control.

Not a doctor so take it with a grain of salt. Maybe stop trying to Shit through your nose. It’s not supposed to work that way. Maybe that’s why it’s not working out.

Just kidding man. When it hits the fan for me, I use humor to deal. Hope you feel better and you and the docs can get a handle on things so you don’t have to relive this again. Be well.

It could cause scar tissue but as to your problem it would also depend on location of your chronic obstruction

All of this is interesting but questions for his GI man, yes as I understand Gastroparesis can be influenced or controlled by damage to the Vagas nerve but more often then not, its something else, but it never hurts to have a check list of things to ask his Doc.

I wanted to add for all of my UCFriends here. When I was laid up with the hose down the nose the laughter this forum provided really just hurt. Physically hurt RollLaughand if they had told me I was about to check out I would have said bye bye and baba booey to you all.
