Fvk COVID-19 and what could have been for Kansas in 2020. There were others who had a shot too but no one got the chance.

Self should have had:

2010
2011
2020 > unlucky

With those teams

Uconn. UNC and Duke all have 3 this century alone. KU 3 all time

self better hang one before he retires or not a good look

KU was the Gonzaga of last year. Maybe they choke at the end but they were a notch above everyone else. They were the Gonzaga / Baylor of this year in that a level up the rest.

Dayton, Zags, Baylor and others were rrally good. And had the blue bloods all in the top 15 as well last year. So maybe a tougher run for KU.

Kansas was certainly the favorite, but they have been the favorite other times and blown it. Hard to really know who would have won it last year. Baylor could be celebrating their second straight championship right now.

One of the teams that doesn't get talked about who got screwed with the pandemic was Florida State. If there was ever a year for Leonard Hamilton to win the title it was 2019-2020, yet he didn't get a shot in the dance.

No doubt. Dayton, FSU, Baylor, zags round out to 5 contenders that played above most teams last year

and honestly even Oregon, nova and Duke were really good. Nova had their same team plus a couple.

Absolutely. You never know because the tournament is a crap shoot. I felt more confident in last year’s KU team about the making the F4 than any recent KU team for 2 reasons.

1. They played such good defense that they didn’t have to rely on the 3-ball and they always brought the effort and focus.

2. Udoka was the toughest matchup to handle in college basketball and by the end of the year subsequently made Dotson and Garrett near impossible to handle in the PnR.

If you were going to beat KU last year you were going to have to hit guarded shots and you were going to have to protect the rim from Udoka, Dotson, and Garrett. That’s a tall order for opponents so my confidence was sky high they’d make the F4 last year. Once you get to the F4 who knows. If KU was shooting the ball well from 3 along with what they had attacking then rim KU wasn’t going to be beat by anyone.

If anyone could have played KU close, then started fouling dok down the stretch, KU would have been very beatable imo.

Still the best team though imo

Obviously KU was no guarantee to win it all, but the “they’ve been a favorite before and blown it” comments aren’t really relevant. This was their best opportunity in a long time, even better than in ‘08. The ‘08 team was better, but the field was stronger that year. There were 3-4 other loaded teams.

This team was less upset-prone than past teams because their strengths were things you could bank on every night. High-percentage twos (Azubuike dunks, Dotson/Garrett drives) and lock-down defense. They didn’t rely on shooting nearly as much as most teams.

A couple of teams actually tried the hack-a-Dok strategy during the 2020 season fouling Dok around the 4-5 minute mark in competitive games and Dok made the FTs when they did and KU extended their lead in those games. Who knows what would have happened in the tournament but at least history showed using it didn’t work against KU that year.

Yeah they were the favorite, but we'll never know. It does suck. Obviously Self's legacy would look a lot different with a second ring. Boeheim says there is no bigger jump than from 0 to 1. I disagree. 1 to 2 is a bigger jump. It shows you weren't just relying on a few guys. You are elite at your craft, it isn't just about a great group of players.

Obviously someone else could have won. Baylor has shown this group is elite and they won at Kansas last year. Florida State had their best season pretty much ever. Even Kentucky was loaded again with Quickley, Maxey and Hagans. (Plus Juzang off the bench although he didn't get many minutes)
