...from what I understand this guy grew up a Gamecock fan and was expected to go to Scar, then one weekend he takes a visit to Clemson and commits (feel free to correct me if I'm wrong). Now all of the sudden Dabo is giving this 4 star DT an unconditional release from Clemson and will allow him to transfer to an in-state rival (Scar) to be closer to mom. Everything I'm reading seems to point to an amicable breakup but Josh decided to hire a lawyer during this process. Why would a lawyer need to get involved?

Something seems weird about this situation to me so I'd like to know your thoughts.

Apparently the kids mother has some health issues, and he had been traveling back and fourth to be with her. You can't blame him, if thats true. Hope the best for him, because he's truly a stud. Now if Muschamp has been in contact with him, and persuading him to transfer, thats a different story, and I'll have lost all respect for both parties involved.

There's some prickly aspects to this.

Kid is from Richburg, which is 45 minutes to an hour from Carolina. It is about an hour 45 to 2 hours from Tillman. So basically an hour closer. If it is the health of his mother, as most signs point, maybe everything is legit.

    However....

You make 2 very valid points.

1-Kid growing up a Cock but after a weekend trip to Tillman he commits to them.
2-Legal involvement. I bet this kid had some type of non-disclosure deal pressed his way by Rev. Swinney.

Also, it is not 100% that he's gonna come to Carolina. I've heard through the grapevine that he may wind up at UNC-Charlotte, if the whole sick mother theory is accurate.

What I’m trying to understand is why he felt like he needed to hire a lawyer if this whole “doing what’s best for the kid” thing is really true.

My guess would be because of the timing of everything. How does him being an early enrollee affect his transferring and ability to play this year/ scholarship availability? I can't remember a situation like this so I'm not sure as to a precedent being set.

Maybe scholarship reasons, and also that he'd already taken one semester of classes, and wanting to transfer. Who knows? Maybe Muschcamp provided the lawyer?

I don't see a scenario of collusion on Muschamps part. Not his style and he has no history of something like that. I believe it is exactly like it's being reported, the kid needs to be closer to home for family reasons.

This is from a Clemson "insider." I do not vouch for it's veracity or the genuiness of the author.

Perhaps Belk got caught up in the Clemson recruiting hype and made the wrong decision to commit to the Tigers.

If the story about his mom is a smokescreen, then it will eventually come out, but man I hope this is the case.

Lots & lots of fishiness here.

That being said, I hope the kid comes & dons the Garnet & Black & has a heck of a career.

That kid is going to a FCS school, so he has a chance to win some games closer to home.

I believe it was a true family issue but then again..it also sounds like someone is using that move closer to home due to family health issues to grant that release..still shocked that they would allow for him to play for anyone in the ACC or on our schedule

Seems clear to me that what really happened was they threatened to expose Clemson for it's recruiting tactics.

Honestly, that was exactly what I thought happened. Belk’s commitment to Clemson was such a snap decision based on my understanding of how felt about USCe. The whole lawyer thing doesn’t fit neatly into the narrative that has been reported.

The lawyer thing made me think the whole thing with the mom might be a smoke screen. I’m sure the sick mom thing is true but the way he committed to Clemson was very unconventional and I wouldn’t be surprised if he wanted to leave before the mom issue. Dabo did the right thing for his team by avoiding a media circus and just letting Belk go, but I think there is more to this story than is being reported.

According to Belk himself, Tennessee has reached out. Little confused why he would mention UT if his intentions were to get closer to home. Also said something to the affect of “sometimes things happen and you have to move on”. The more this thing goes on, the more I’m convinced there is more to this story.

Wouldn’t be the first time. There was an OL a few years ago (Battle?) who left for the supplementary draft. Was later found out he failed multiple drug test. Not saying this is the case but Dabo will “no comment” before bad mouthing a player.

Yeah, I read that too. Saying that Scar is not out of the question, but he was seeking other colleges as well including Tenn. The story isn't adding up now.
