Running UK Game Thread: 1/28 Kentucky vs Tennessee

High level game. Two very good teams.

Think the talent difference was pretty stark in the game. Oats is a dynamite coach too and the style of play makes it tough if you can't match them.

Yes, it's crazy to suggest there's a conspiracy to help other teams and hurt Kentucky. Why the hell would the NCAA want to hurt Kentucky? Lol.

Well you're the resident conspiracy theorist, I didn't say it's one, just that UK has gotten a shit home whistle in SEC play.

Kentucky outplayed Bama, statistically speaking. Unfortunately the zebras once again took over an SEC game in the second half. Bama was in the DOUBLE BONUS with 10 min still to go in the second half, while only being called for two fouls. Yet another game where a team is exponentially more physical then UK (pretty sure Nelson just pushed off again while I am typing this), shoots more threes, yet goes to the charity like over and over. Go figure.

Wait until UK plays at Bama later this year, and you will really see some home cooking.

UK was the better team, in my opinion.

Not concerned with the loss in the slightest. Will be nice to have a full week to get some guys healthy.

They clearly weren’t the better team though. It was a hard fought game, but it was within single digits for majority of the game. Alabama got the W, so how were they the lesser?

I never said clearly. I said, in my opinion, UK was the better team. I stand by that.

Look, it will come across as sour grapes to UL fans, and that is fine, I get it. But UK has been absolutely screwed in the reffing dept against both UGA and Bama. OSU and Clemson deserved to win, and did so. Cannot say the same for UGA and Bama.

Look, if refs are going to call fouls on UK, that is fine. But when UK takes the ball to the hoop, or posts up a big, and there is repeated contact and no whistle, that is a problem.

Teams are allowed to be overly physical with UK, while shooting more threes, and are somehow rewarded. UK in turn tries to match physicality, and it is called a foul. Very frustrating as a fan.

Not sure what else UK can do. But SEC reffing is a joke.

It’s easy to think that you got a bad whistle when your team loses, but Kentucky fouled 4 times in the last minute to intentionally put bama at the line. Those 4 fouls were the only difference in the amount of fouls called, 25-21.

I believe conspiracy theories that make sense and are backed by evidence, sure.

I agree. Bama was the better team. Better coached too. Still think the whistle was a fvcking joke in the second half though. There's never any consistency, and the first 10 minutes they called stuff completely different on both ends of the floor.

Think UK has been about as good as you can expect considering Pope had a month to completely transform the roster after being hired. But there's a real ceiling athleticism wise.

I agree. UK did foul multiple times at the end. But I am not talking about free throw disparity.

I am talking about calling it consistently on both ends of the court. For whatever reason, UK has not benefitted from the same whistle that opponents are getting since SEC play started. Bama was in the double bonus, while only having two fouls called on them. Yet they were taking threes left and right. Anytime they took it inside, UK was called for a foul. Again, that's fine. But whenever UK got physical offensively and took it inside, the refs called nothing. It has been the same since SEC play started.

And if you do want to bring free throw attempts up, look at the UK home game vs UF. 32-18 in favor of the Gators. And UF shot 40 threes, lol. 40. Anytime in the second half they drove, whistle blew. Every time. Not for UK though. Apparently all SEC teams know how to play incredibly physically without fouling, except UK.

I’m not trying to argue, just giving you another take. Alabama and Florida both try initiating contact when they shoot, Kentucky generally shys away from contact when they shoot.

Nick, sometimes you just got beat.

Mornin' della. You doing okay? That was a bad one for the vols last night. I definitely didn't expect that.
What's your take on this UT team?
Tennessee is great. Easy come easy go. Looking forward to kicking Aubie's ass Saturday.

Absolutely. Pope has done a remarkable job with this team, and they have a very high ceiling in the NCAA tournament.

Make it happen. Somebody has to get Auburn before Broome gets back.
That kid doesn’t even know how to spell his name. Johni, what? It’s anywho, we kicked his ass last year and no reason not to kick it again.

Well, even Calipari kicked their asses last year, so it probably wasn't all that hard, but I'll definitely take a win @ Auburn any day.

He’s the 2nd winningest coach in UK history, and they hate him. Only Adolf Rupp won more for them. Very weird how that whole situation has been.
Would you take Denny Crum back right now?

That’s kind of a morbid question, but the answer would be no.
Exactly, Crum was great in his prime, but that job has a lifespan, he ran out of gas years before he retired. Great guy through.

When it comes to Cal, it's pretty simple. He was great when he was getting the best players. He stacked great talent and that was part of it, but also, that guy didn't take any bullshit back then. When he was talking, those players shut their mouths and they respected him, even though he worked them into the dirt.

At some point, Cal changed. He got fat on the money, he got tired from being pulled in a million directions, then he got incredibly soft and he stopped putting in the work.

Then, he started calling out the fans, while he was losing eye popping games, because he got lazy and he put the NBA draft as a priority.

I could list off a long list of things that happened the last 5 years that would turn any fanbase against a coach, no matter what he did 10 years earlier, but you already know everything that went down, because you are all over everything UK, which is quite impressive.

If we're talking about Cal from 2009-2017, yes, give me that guy any day of the week.

But 2018-2025 Cal, is lazy, soft, ornery, narcissistic and his fastball isn’t even little league worthy.

Just wait until he retires from Arkansas, you'll hear and read the same things from them, you don't have to believe me. UK fans were laughing the second Arkansas signed Cal, we knew it was going to be a disaster and they saved our asses from having to pay a 28 million dollar buyout, because that dude was going to get shit canned after this season.

I complained about the refs in UKs last game...not this game.

This has been a good old fashioned butt kicking in the first half.

UK is playing how they did against OSU, no intensity and little effort (at least in comparison to Vandy). Very concerning that this keeps happening under Pope.

Second, injuries are piling up too much for UK. Only playing with one point guard with Kriisa out, and that point guard (Butler) has been hurt for quite a while and shouldn't be playing. Carr is out as well today.

A lot of weird lineups were played in the first half, and that coupled with the poor effort has led to double digit turnovers and the current score.

Maybe not playing like complete ass in 1st halves so they don't have to play out of their minds in the 2nd would be good too. That's been a trend all season.
1st half of this game was especially bad. Our women's team would have given more effort.

Soft with a hard T.
