I'm not saying a good coach can't win at ISU, and it's obviously not a terrible job or they wouldn't have had the success they have had. However, I do think the success is a testament to the coaches themselves (whether as recruiters, Xs and Os coaches or both) and possibly to their fans' loyalty rather than any built-in advantages. ISU has decent facilities and a decent campus/college town, and it is also in a big time conference. However, the history/tradition is not enough to recruit nationally with any type of swagger, obviously, and the instate recruiting is not enough to get you to being a top 25 team regularly, especially when you're competing for it with at least Iowa. The fact that the Hawkeyes have a way bigger fan appeal instate than ISU probably hurts recruiting efforts even more. Without doing extensive research again, I would probably rank the Big XII jobs something like this:
1. Kansas - Obvious.
2. Texas - So many resources at your disposal, great recruiting, good tradition AND relatively low fan expectations compared to what you might expect (i.e., no getting run out of town like the folks in Bloomington, IN would do to you).
3. Oklahoma - Actually a comparable tradition to Okie State all-time with much more appeal statewide.
4. Oklahoma State - Great tradition, good booster money and an iconic arena, but it is still second fiddle FANwise in OK to OU.
5. West Virginia - While it might not look great on paper, it has a decent tradition and is a lot closer to DC and PA talent than many realize. I am also a believer that being the only school in a major/appealing conference (like WVU for the Big XII or Maryland for the Big Ten) is actually a plus and a decent recruiting draw.
6. Texas Tech - While it IS kind of far away from the hot spots, it also has broader appeal than Baylor and still can cash in on some of the instate talent that UT or A&M don't gobble up. Decent resources and a loyal fan base.
7. Baylor - Yes, they're super good now but that is a testament to Scott Drew, IMO. Baylor has a smaller/more niche appeal than the other Texas schools and needs a truly great recruiter to be relevant ... see: their history before Drew.
8. Iowa State - See above.
9. TCU - Somewhat limited appeal and less popular instate than your neighbors, but you can still find decent/overlooked talent instate. Facilities are meh.
10. Kansas State - Not only are you in a small state with bad instate talent, but you share that state with a Blue Blood that pretty much dominates you.
