Prohm out at Iowa St

Did ISU just poached a .500 coach from UNLV? I hope UNLV bring Archie Miller to Vegas

People overrate that job because of the awesome fan support and a recent run of good teams. That’s got to be one of the harder places to win of BCS schools, IMO.

It almost seems like it’d be hard to go 2-22. Wouldn’t you have to sort of try to be that bad if you have the budget of a Big 12 school? I would imagine you just accidentally win like 5 games.

Hard would be going 9-16 at Kentucky.

2-22 is terrible, but it's not hard to see how a bad team could lose a few more than expected when half their team was out at various points of the season, some of their winnable games were cancelled, and 17 of their games were against teams that were solidly in the tourney.

Jobs are ranked truthfully by how much shit does a fanbase give you
Then by how that name opens door.

Any P5 job will open doors but some more than others. I guess it is based on the player truthfully.

But Iowa State tends to expect to play in the NCAA Tournament. The fanbase can have higher expectations especially for a rebuild like this .

But Iowa State has had an impressive run with pretty much Coaches all being able to win at some level

Iowa St has a long and decent history since the 80s. You can win there.

Also, it doesn't help that Baylor and Texas Tech are good. They are not traditionally good teams and makes it hard to compete

I like their new coach as I thought he did a great job at South Dakota State.

Really going to have to take some high reward high risk guys

That is the problem with Iowa State. Their margin of error.

Neill Berry was hitting some of those guards. Iowa State had great guard play. For a school that doesn't recruit like the others they were bringing in some players with NBA upside....

But if you go to a camp...You see a lot of those guys. Hard to grab the right one or two.

This is what TJ Otz and his staff have to do.

Messed up thing is they had one of those right down the street.
Emarion Ellis is someone Neill Berry knew for awhile and is ending up at Texas

I'm not saying a good coach can't win at ISU, and it's obviously not a terrible job or they wouldn't have had the success they have had. However, I do think the success is a testament to the coaches themselves (whether as recruiters, Xs and Os coaches or both) and possibly to their fans' loyalty rather than any built-in advantages. ISU has decent facilities and a decent campus/college town, and it is also in a big time conference. However, the history/tradition is not enough to recruit nationally with any type of swagger, obviously, and the instate recruiting is not enough to get you to being a top 25 team regularly, especially when you're competing for it with at least Iowa. The fact that the Hawkeyes have a way bigger fan appeal instate than ISU probably hurts recruiting efforts even more. Without doing extensive research again, I would probably rank the Big XII jobs something like this:

1. Kansas - Obvious.
2. Texas - So many resources at your disposal, great recruiting, good tradition AND relatively low fan expectations compared to what you might expect (i.e., no getting run out of town like the folks in Bloomington, IN would do to you).
3. Oklahoma - Actually a comparable tradition to Okie State all-time with much more appeal statewide.
4. Oklahoma State - Great tradition, good booster money and an iconic arena, but it is still second fiddle FANwise in OK to OU.
5. West Virginia - While it might not look great on paper, it has a decent tradition and is a lot closer to DC and PA talent than many realize. I am also a believer that being the only school in a major/appealing conference (like WVU for the Big XII or Maryland for the Big Ten) is actually a plus and a decent recruiting draw.
6. Texas Tech - While it IS kind of far away from the hot spots, it also has broader appeal than Baylor and still can cash in on some of the instate talent that UT or A&M don't gobble up. Decent resources and a loyal fan base.
7. Baylor - Yes, they're super good now but that is a testament to Scott Drew, IMO. Baylor has a smaller/more niche appeal than the other Texas schools and needs a truly great recruiter to be relevant ... see: their history before Drew.
8. Iowa State - See above.
9. TCU - Somewhat limited appeal and less popular instate than your neighbors, but you can still find decent/overlooked talent instate. Facilities are meh.
10. Kansas State - Not only are you in a small state with bad instate talent, but you share that state with a Blue Blood that pretty much dominates you.

The fact is that Baylor, Texas Tech and possibly even TCU in the future see an avenue to gain superiority in Texas in a major sport.

So Iowa State has to raise their level.

The level of the Big 12 has risen the last few years. On Iowa State to rise with it.

Even TCU isn't a bad job.
They brought in Dixon. Threw tremendous amount of $$$$ in their program.

They really aren't too far off.

They could be the one who becomes the basketball power in Texas.

TJ was the guy who recruited most of the great players when Fred made a run few good seasons and then in to Prohm couple years with those recruits. Obviously imo having Fred as HC probably helped that recruiting but he knows the Midwest and the AAU circuit etc. So can he replicate it? sure hope so as a Cyclone fan. Think i heard his UNLV class ranked like 20. So if he can do that there outside of his midwest base, i'm banking on he can bring talent to ISU as well. Some posters here don't understand we pride ourselves on BB more so then FB. FB loooking good though!

Can Hoiberg turn Iowa State around into one of the top teams in Big 12 again like he did before? They just went 2-22, to turn this sunk ship around will take quite a few years.

Hoiberg is fine where he is.

Surprised they went with Otz at this stage. Otz hasn't done anything at unlv to be worthy of a better job.

Minnesota forced their hand

Not a 450 foot home run hire but could be
He is that respected as a coach.

Iowa State needs a complete rebuild. We will see. Big 12 basketball iw as good as it ever has been.
After this year there is a good chance 70% of the conference has a coach who has been to a Final 4.

I have seen Iowa State have some teams.
I wouldn't count them out
That Fizer/Tinsley team gave eventual NC Michigan State everything they could handle in the E8. Most likely was the second best team in basketball that year.

Iowa State as a program can reach that level.
