The whole damn town. Schools, Hospital, shopping centers, everything.
Probably started from a meth lab explosion, the town is nothing but old, poor people and tweakers.

Photos: The “wall of fire” that destroyed Paradise, California
    [IMG]

Update (2:45pm ET): Authorities have confirmed five deaths related to the fire.

Fueled by high winds, the Camp Fire blazed rapidly spread the northern California town of Paradise yesterday (Nov. 8), burning over 70,000 acres and leading to the evacuation of the town’s 27,000 residents, plus thousands more in surrounding Butte County. As of writing, the fire is only 5% contained.

A police officer who works in nearby Chico was quoted in the AP describing the blaze he encountered when trying to evacuate residents: “It was just a wall of fire on each side of us, and we could hardly see the road in front of us.”

The AP recounted the terrifying scene as the fire accelerated towards the town:

Residents described fleeing their homes and getting stuck on gridlocked roads as flames approached, sparking explosions and toppling utility poles.

“Things started exploding,” said resident Gina Oviedo. “People started getting out of their vehicles and running.”

Many abandoned their cars on the side of the road, fleeing on foot. Cars and trucks, some with trailers attached, were left on the roadside as evacuees ran for their lives, said [Mark] Bass, the police officer. “They were abandoned because traffic was so bad, backed up for hours.”

Thick gray smoke and ash filled the sky above Paradise and could be seen from miles away.

California is battling wildfires across the state. Two other wind-fueled fires, the Hill and Woolsey fires, are both burning across Ventura County in southern California.

They asked some old guy standing in his driveway w/his daughter screaming, we need to get out of here, while his house burned why he was there.

He thought he could save his house.

    WTH?

Huge amount of haze all the way down in San Jose already because of it.

All of these wildfires were bound to happen after the drought, but o did not realize it would be this bad.

My wife and I drove thru there a few weeks ago to pick up a puppy. Now to think so much of what we saw is blasted away by fire. Damn! I hope Chico escapes. Fire favors no one.
We also saw other burned areas out of Redding, from a couple months ago, with so much damage it was hard to take it all in.

The fire must be really bad because the air quality is terrible here.

My cousin lives in Paradise, her house is almost certainly gone. She tried to get home, and couldn’t get anywhere near it.

My wife’s aunt is evacuated right now from the fire in Thousand Oaks. Between the shooting at that bar near her house and this, it has been a shitty couple of days for her.

The one down south has forced the evacuation of the entire city of Malibu.

I have a buddy who lives on the eastern side of Chico, he was under a voluntary evacuation as of this morning. I doubt it would get very far into Chico, but everything on the east side of Bruce Rd might get toasty.

Cal Fire won’t let the entire city of Malibu burn. Paradise is a shithole though. No big loss. (Except for the people who died obviously)

I think I’m gonna take out an ad in the Chico newspaper encouraging all the Paradise residents to move to Idaho. Their insurance settlements will go much farther there.

    Serious question.

If you don't have flood insurance, most companies won't pay off on tidal surges, floods, etc.

Do they require any specialized fire insurance in Ca?

Yeah, you can get fire insurance and most people do, but there are a lot of areas that insurance companies won’t cover. Mostly heavily wooded neighborhoods with one main road in and out. Most of the people whose homes burned in the Soberanes Fire in this area a couple years ago had no fire insurance. Those homes were all in Palo Colorado Canyon which has one windy little dead end road that snakes through it.

Paradise is up in the foothills and is pretty heavily wooded, but it’s not that small of a town. I’m sure there are neighborhoods in the surrounding shithole towns that insurance companies won’t touch, but most people in the city limits probably have fire insurance. At least, they should...with all the meth labs up there.
