JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - Two former employees of a Mississippi veterans home have been charged with manslaughter in the 2017 death of a 93-year-old World War II veteran.
Police charged 25-year-old Jeanne Dunn of Oxford and 41-year-old Bridget Austin of Abbeville with culpable negligence manslaughter.
Oxford Police Chief Joey East says investigators long suspected Dunn and Austin had dropped Durley Bratton in April 2017 and then put him back in bed without telling anyone, leaving him to die of his injuries.
However, East says investigators felt they didn't have enough evidence until autopsy results were returned on July 2, concluding Bratton died of blunt-force trauma.
Dunn was arrested that day. Austin was arrested Monday.
Both are jailed on $250,000 bond. East says he doesn't know if either woman has a lawyer.

I fully understand and have dealt with them as well. But you get the jest of my meaning.

They could but they are too cheap to pay for quality work. I guess they'll just have to pay when the lawsuit hits.

I honestly don't know how these kind of people are even able to get certified to work in these places.

A lot of the people I see working at assisted living places in my town are just straight slobs and they always look pissed off when they're going to work..........

Because most people don't want to pay what it would cost to get professional trained, quality people in there.

How many want to deal with diapers soiled sheets, bed pans, barhing people and all that sometimes goes with dealing with the elderly who cannot care for themselves.

The liability is enormous, there are places that keep them sedated and barely keep the place clean.

The cost for top notch facilities is staggering. And a large percentage of people, of any age, have saved for the time they may need one.

What I'm getting depends on how she feels about me that day.

I've gone from a nice place to a grate by the bank building in a single day. Sometimes I get a blanket with the grate.

Too bad Pete's Famous has gone under at least you could have had a hot dog when your donation box got some in it.:p

Seriously went through this with my Mom. Had her in some places around Birmingham and I talked the rest of the other kids to move her here. That way I could visit each day.

The biggest difference between the other places and Woodland was this. At the other places you could always find some one or usually several some ones at the desk. At Woodland you had to chase a nurse down because they were on the floor taking care of patients.

    Thanks. I'll file that away.

I remind Mr BG I'll probably be in charge of making his arrangements, then search on Worst Nursing Homes in the Country when he irritates me.

I think its hard to judge any one until you've walked a mile in their shoes. I wouldn't want to be burdened with an elderly person. I've been around a few and it isn't a very pleasant experience, I'm not saying that people shouldn't be careful but accidents do happen. And there have always been problems with generational issues.
I went in a Mormon mission some time ago. The age difference was slight but the cultural difference seemed like the Grand Canyon. I was about six years older but it felt like seventy.
I never liked being called out fur my inadequacies. We can blame people for accidents, but if the guy was 93 maybe it was simply his time. I'm not going to judge it. I don't think I should. People make mistakes and there maybe was a lack of supervision. I wouldn't want that job.
In fact I mostly hated every job I've had.
Be careful how you label a person. I know I always hated being labelled. Remember the English Patient?
Despite what you think of it the guy was a POS. His being injured didn't change that fact. Its hard to know what characteristics a person might have had. I knew a guy who wound up in a nursing home and I frankly thought he was a horses ass. He was a veteran. I'm just saying who ate we to judge?

There was a case recently in or near Atlanta where the nurses and nursing assistants allowed a 90+ yr old man suffer and not give him CPR....all caught on video (he was a WWII Veteran also)...so sad to hear his cries for help.

Guy was 93. I'm not saying there wasn't negligence I'm just asking you to put it into perspective. Does anyone really like assisted living facilities? I've been in a few. They ate depressing. Even if they are well attended and I'm guessing most probably are, they are still depressing. There's no getting around it. I don't know what happened. I'm not sure it matters. Guy was 93. That's old. Maybe not ancient. Maybe not derelict but old nevertheless. I'm 49.
I feel old. I'm not young and chopper. I'm approximately 1/2 the age of that fellow.
Certainly we want to keep people happy.
But I don't think it's a simple task. Someone stated part of the problem might be the people assigned to the care (orderlies).
I think its a compounded problem. We can all sit in a high horse and complain about it, but unless we are taking am active role I think its maybe as hypocritical to those who ARE. I don't like being this way. But its easy to throw a stone, much harder to help it seems. I experience pain. I'm not getting much help. I think people pretty much SUCK.
I wish I didn't feel this way but I do. I could blame someone else bit what good does it do? Complaining never helped any one. Ever.

I’m just going out on a limb here but he probably said some “colorful” things to the staff regularly. I’m not justifying their actions, just a thought that occurred to me.

Of course not In not suggesting they acted appropriately, I'm just asking people to put things into perspective. Life is relatively short. I think its sad when any one passes on, bit I'm not going to live my entire life worrying about things beyond my control.

I got tore apart 2 weeks ago by a room full of about 250 angry elderly when I told them we would be installing new locks that actually stay locked on their apartment doors. You would have thought I told them butterscotch candy and Matlock are discontinued.

Sad thing is this might have just been an accident who knows but because they covered it up and didn't come straight forward to the proper authorities to help the man this is where it went down hill.

I don't work there. It's a non-sequitor. I'm tired of being blamed for shit I'm not responsible for. I think 93 years old is pretty damn old. I doubt I'll make it. I am not saying I'm "happy" some old guy wasn't treated properly. I've had issues with U.S. veterans before. I'm not awe-inspired, I referenced the English Patient. Being in a nursing home doesn't mean that guy was a prince.
