ive been bow hunting for 10ish years now. Obviously live in KS and have some land I hunt in far NW Kansas. The rut has officially started and I’m looking forward to getting back up in my stand.

Any other hunters on this board?

have bowhunted since the late 70's
best buck scored 163 P&Y

Nice. It’s starting to snow out here where I’m at. Probably going to head to my stand around 1 and sit the rest of the day.

Bucks make bad mistakes during the rut. I’ve seen some crazy things happen this time of year. Hoping one slips up and crosses my stand this afternoon/evening.

this time of the year you look at trail cams and select what you want to take. Hunting is plentiful.

most of us males do

around 1 is one of the peak times for those big boys to be chasing doe's

My BIL got a huge buck a few weeks back with a bow. I grilled some backstrap this past weekend from a doe my boy shot a few years back.

Anyone have any advice on cooking the tenderloin for venison?

Where are you at?

I am more of a fisherman. But they fish with bows too.

Get your hands on backstraps if you can. Wrap in bacon. Put them on the grill. Will dissolve in you mouth. It’s amazing. Best part of the deer and it’s not even close.

Tenderloin best cooked in my opinion is pan fried/seared.

Yeah, I have done back straps and am doing more this weekend. I’ve used this marinade with soy sauce, minced garlic, worchestershire, etc... because my boy likes it. I was thinking of adding in some Cajun dry rub to it to see how that goes.

We have some regular steaks as well but I’m not sure how they compare to the backstrap. Probably sinewy is my guess.

I have a buddy that hunts in the land behind my house. Last year he gave us some of the tenderloin meat. We cut it up in chunks and cooked it in a sact iron skillet with peppers and onions and made cheesesteaks with it. Was pretty good.

I have never hunted myself, though I do have my hunter's safety license. I've "guided" my FIL the last 4 years for Elk hunting here in CO. Muzzle loader and rifle though, not bow.

He actually gave me his bow (TenPoint something or other) but I've never gone out with it.

Might go pheasant hunting one of these weekends, to kind of ease myself into hunting.

TenPoint crossbow. I’ve got one myself. Best crossbows on the market.

Northwest of Hays about an hour. You around here?
about an hour east of hays. My buddy hunts that area all the time. One guy out of hays does guiding--has provided service for some crazy high profile hunters.

I don't hunt at all but I enjoy the food. My uncle shot a bit 1300 lb moose up in Canada and brought us some meat. It was ridiculously good.

Do y’all hunters enjoy shooting apex predators? Not a hunter but I just wondered. I keep hearing these horror stories about people killing baby wolves and bears in their dens. Is that real, or is that just democrats trying to pull at my heart strings?

Did he mount the head? I would love a huge moose over the fireplace.

Kansas has always been a bucket list deer hunting destination for me. Love the spread, height and multiple points Kansas bucks are known for. I've been deer hunting for close to 40 years. Don't use the bow much these days, but I do use my old Jennings Devastator Crossbow, Thompson 50 cal. muzzleloader, and Remington Model 700 BDL 30-06 rifle. All are pretty old weapons by today's standards, but do the work just fine for me. Gun season opens here in Kentucky on Saturday. Can NOT wait!

I can't remember. We go to his house several times a year for family functions like the 4th, Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc.... They have this big room we all eat in that has a huge mounted bear, some sort of big cat fighting some other animal, and all sorts of other things he has shot. Pretty cool stuff.

My boy went on the youth hunt here last week and saw an 8 pointer that morning but passed it up for something bigger that evening and then saw nothing, haha. Regrets.

If you’re hunting public land you don’t pass that up. I’ve learned that the hard way. Everyone thinks they are going to get that 14 point monster but the fact of the matter is people are paying thousands of dollars to kill those bucks. I don’t pass on anything under 8 points. Plus KS bucks are damn good eating so if nothing else I’m eating good for a year.

They only hunt on private land. It was on my wife's parents land I think. They have around 300 acres on the riverbottom here. They do mostly duck hunting. He used to have a hunting preserve where he released quail and dove. It could have also been on my BIL's land. Heck, I don't know. We are lucky to have a number of places for him to go though.

Do they have any timbers? Food plots?

Haven't hunted in about 10 years, only have time (and money) for one hobby and I chose golf. Ironically I suck at golf but was a deadeye with a bow.

You chose the wrong hobby. But you’re right. Hunting is very expensive. But there’s nothing better than sitting in a tree stand waiting for that buck to slip up and cross your stand.

You're questioning whether the party of feelings is wanting to pull at your heart strings?

Got one with the bow Nov. 1. 15" 8pt. Nothing special. Glad I did though as we have been flooded for most of the fall. And now all the still-water is going to freeze.
