I’ll just do a few fact checks here.
• JJJ wasn’t a top 3 pick
• Ben Carter wasn’t a walk on
• JJJ improved his draft stock by playing for us, he wasn’t projected top 5 which goes against your whole narrative
• As someone who was keeping very up to date with mocks, Bridges wasn’t a top ten lock, that’s just false. He was projected 10-14 which is the range he was taken the year later. Maybe 1 or 2 mocks had him that high but the the consensus was he wasn’t top 10.
• Where is the evidence Izzo “berated” him into staying. I think that’s just a homeboard theory bud. I also just don’t think berating someone into not leaving would be a effective.
I don't think Izzo berates guys into staying. He has just gotten a bit more crafty over the years on what he needs to do.
Like telling borderline first round draft pick Adreian Payne that his dead grandma would really have wanted him to stay to get his degree (you can still come back and finish up once you have millions from the NBA).
Or in Bridges case I think he had Tum Tum dropping hints in his ear over the course of the year. It worked.
One that didn't work was when Deyonta Davis was debating on a pro career to help his (by all accounts) very poor family. Izzo was quoted in the media saying how Deyonta should stay because that will help him with his 'second' NBA contract. (Please have your family live another year in dire need so you can help me win a title). Lol fvckin dirtball

Do you have a link to Izzo telling Payne his dead grandma would want him back? All I could see is is grandma wanted him to graduate and it was one of the reasons he decided to come back, which improved his draft stock by the way, which UM guys always seem to leave out. I couldn’t find that anywhere. And he was probably right on Davis, he never did get a second contract and flamed out in the pros. It’s a weird guy to bring up for the point you’re trying to make.

Awesome that Payne improved his stock. My guess is that happens 10% of the time (improve) with 20% of the time the stock remaining the same and the remainder dropping for a 22 y/o borderline first pick. Excellent judgement. Should do that every time.
And Davis (who was a projected lottery pick) should have stayed for the marginal chance increase of getting that second contract. Bad decision that his family can at least have a normal life off the back of his brief NBA earnings.
We probably wouldn't shit on Izzo if he didn't torch Marcus Taylor in the media for two straight years after he left early in 2002. (Along with then only sending one dude early to the NBA.....top 3 recruit Shannon Brown after junior year.....over the next 12 seasons despite a boatload of top 50 recruits).

I agree it doesn’t work every time and I never claimed it did, but it did for Payne and that’s a fact and that’s what happened in this situation. Payne came back and improved his stock. It’s a weird argument that Izzo is awful because sometimes it doesn’t work. It quite literally worked. He improved his stock. End of story. This Payne thing is a weird hill for you to die on. A guy comes back to MSU and improves his draft stock yet Izzo is horrible and holds kids back. Ok lol.
And for the Davis thing, he went in the second round and he never got a second contract. Would another year have helped? Who knows. But it’s not crazy to suggest him leaving after 1 year to be a second round pick and then out of the league in like 2 years maybe wasn’t the best option. And maybe Izzo isn’t trying to keep a poor kid from getting money but actually is trying to do what he says he’s trying to do, help him secure a second contract that he never ended up getting. I know UM fans would never believe that though. Obviously Izzo is a monster and Davis made the right choice by going.
The only thing this confirms is that opposing teams should hope that he shoots.
