*Official* B1G Off-season Thread

A burner account from 06...damn that takes dedication.
Would it honestly shock anyone? Haha I didn’t even look at his profile. Didn’t really bother since he came out of the gate with some lame hyperbole free board crap SNU style.

I'll believe the bold when I see it in games. He is going to be a good player. Not sure what that says about Michigan State if he is starting though.
That’s what the highest praise about him is at this point. They thought his shot would be a work in progress, but it looks really really nice.

We don’t have a lot of good wings this year.

Do you really think finishing 5th in the BIG THIS YEAR in a much stronger conference, is a big drop off from last years results in a historically bad conference?

Personally, I don't believe there would be much difference in regards to how well the team played if they would finish 5th this year compared to tied for 2nd last year. Simply because the conference was arguably the weakest ever last year.
Go review the 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, and 2008 seasons real quick.

Purdue won 30 games, finished second in the league, runner-up in the BTT, and was a 2-seed. Finishing 5th or 6th in the B1G with a likely 6 or 7 seed would be a substantive step back.

Damnit people you helped @SNU0821 set up a burner account.
Not mine. This is the only account I've got. It's good to know that I'm still living rent free for all Purdue fans. Any time someone trolls Purdue fans, they think it's me. Lol.

I saw 1 person (last post) that had Purdue as #1 and FWIW, 5th is not unreasonable, especially for a free board. Apart from IU and Michigan, the B1G doesn't have many uber-talented rosters, and I don't see the conference as a whole being better next year than it was last year.

I really hope you're wrong. The top might not be as sexy (looking, yet), but the middle is so much better (imo).

Screw it...dont worry I wont bother posting anymore.
And you call other people sensitive o_O

It has nothing to do with being sensitive, its being tired of explaining myself. I asked a simple question that I was hoping to get an answer to. Instead I've spent the past few hours explaining it over and over. I don't do the typical insult type of thing. I come here to get information or a quick laugh during down times.

it seems that type of thing wont work for a new poster here.

Damn theres some sensitive people here today.

I didn't realize that thinking when a team loses 4 starters to graduation there would be a big fall off the next season is such a big deal.

Note taken.
Yeah, the Purdue fans are overly sensitive. Think it's just the way they are. I guess mediocrity does that to a group...

I admittedly did, even went with your hyperbole “Purdue fans don’t think they’ll take a step back” stuff. I did notice you “liked” all the posts as well. I think you guys would make great friends.

Sheeeeeiiiit the way this conference has played recently 5th in conference is a 13 seed and 6th is a 2 seed in the NIT. This conference needs to win some big non-conference games.

What was the question?

I see that a lot of Purdue fans aren't expecting a big drop off next year What am I missing here to not expect that after losing 4 starters.

That was the question but honestly I don't care anymore about the answer

So far, the Freshman for MSU that has gotten the least amount of praise has been our highest rated prospect, Marcus Bingham. Pretty much as expected, he’s definitely a project.

He’s as skinny as a stick, but has apparently had some nice defensive plays. Think he won’t get a ton of minutes this season, but down the line he could be a pretty good player.

Its the offseason must people are pretty high on their teams so you weren’t really going to get an answer that you’re looking for. Most people think their will be a drop off at Purdue, how far depends on the players stepping into the starting lineup.

FBM (Free Board Material) should only be used as a base jump,

Purdue fans, I've read your board and the fans seem pretty high on this year's team.
While I don't agree they'll be top 3, give me a rundown of how you think they'll finish and what the team's strengths and weaknesses are..

This way you stroke the fans and still get to include some FBM doozies.
FBM Doozies are great if you aren't a fan of that team.
Thankfully, Kansas has their board on lock down.. smmfh.

I was told you guys really only cared about tourney wins, the regular season can suck it.

Thanks for actually answering my original question. Who do you all need to step up next year to get into the top 5? Of course, Carsen and Haarms, but who else will need to make a major jump from backup role player to major contributor?

The reason I even thought about this was after looking at the thread I linked, I started to wonder who they'll get enough points from.
I like the late addition of Evan Boudreaux. He's very reminiscent of Brian Cardinal who those older opposing fans among the board will remember was a real pain in the ass. I know it is a significant step up from Dartmouth but he did average 17.6, 9.5 and shot 37.4% from three in his two years there. I think he can be a skilled bruiser at the 4 and possibly play some small ball 5 when Haarms exits.

I'm intrigued by the prospects of Aaron Wheeler because Purdue hasn't really had a guy like him recently. He redshirted last year and has yet to play a minute of major college ball so I'm not going to anoint him like others have. But he is a high level athlete and was 5-5 from three in the National Prep Championship game for Brewster Academy so there is some skill there.

Purdue is really going to need Nojel Eastern to step up shooting the ball, especially from the free throw line because you can't put a PG on the floor late who can't hit from the line. I hope he will but have no idea. Ryan Cline is our lone scholarship senior and needs to show he can do more than just shoot. We'll see.

You say 5th isn't a big drop off. Purdue went 15-3 and 30-7 this past season. In the last 5 years, the 5th best team in the B1G went:
2018 - 13-5 / 22-11
2017 - 10-8 / 26-12
2016 - 12-6 / 22-11
2015 - 12-6 / 21-13
2014 - 10-8 / 25-10

That's a rounded average of 11-7 / 23-11. Maybe you don't see 4 losses worse in conference and 7 wins worse overall as a "big dropoff" but I sure do.

Big non-conference wins gives better seeding which gives better opportunities to win in March.

Answer: No sane Purdue fan thinks the team won’t take a step back.

Reason for optimism: C. Edwards: may be the best player in the country next season, should be All-American level at the least one would think.

Evan Boudreaux: transfer from Dartmouth that should be good in the pick and roll and was really productive in the Ivy League. See how it translates but at the very least should provide solid minutes/leadership.

Haarms: great freshman season for a 7’3 mobile big that seems to have the tools to be a nice offensive piece in the near future.

N. Eastern: at the very least will be one of the best defenders in the big ten, anything on offense would be gravy.

R. Cline: is what he is but can fill it up from deep which gives space for players like Carsen.

A. Wheeler: hype-train RS freshman that definitely looks the part, just have to see it now. Freak athlete that appears to be shooting really well too.

E. Hunter: freshman that should provide a scoring punch off the bench.

Sasha Stefonovic: outside shooter, we’ll see on everything else but sounds like the coaching staff was pleased with his ability to defend last summer so can’t imagine he’s gotten worse.

Trevion Williams: out of shape but really skilled big that can rebound the ball. Redshirt candidate but any production from him would be gravy.

Dowuona: also redshirt candidate. Athletic but raw, should be a plus defensively.

So long story short, I see pieces I like but impossible to replace 4 productive seniors but I don’t see Purdue falling off a cliff.

Thanks for the time and effort..

In a normal season, yes 4 more loses and 7 less wins would be a step back. But with how bad the conference was last year, I don't think its nearly as big of a drop off as normal. My view simply maybe from judging the conference to harshly last year.

Evan The Frenchie is who I hope really steps in and shows out.
Hope he's legit, and I'm excited for the new kids Hunter and the bigs.
Might just be I'm anxious to see their starting lineup Game 1.

In the last AP regular season poll, the Big Ten had #5 MSU, #7 Michigan, #11 Purdue and #17 Ohio State. In most preseason polls, I not sure I've seen more than 4 Big Ten teams and in no poll were those 4 all in the top 17. I'm not sure where you are seeing the Big Ten being so much better this year. The middle might be a little better but I'm not seeing it substantially better.

The kid played for basically what was the worst team in the country for two years. I am taking a wait and see

All we're doing is adapting SNU's line of thinking from last offseason: Losing three or four of your best players will actually improve your team. It's common sense.

234th and 305th on KenPom his two years so I'm not sure that's even close to "basically the worst". But you are right they were bad. Does that make it easier or harder to put up 17 and 9? I can see that answer going both ways and I've seen many people question how good Carsen will be without the 4 seniors spreading the floor.

10 and 7 wins is bad.

Rest of team sucks he is decent so he gets the 17 points. Rest of team sucks they miss plenty of shots he is decent gets 9 rebounds.

My only counter would be Torvik had 6 Big teams in the final Top 50 last season
(ESPN's BPI also had 6)
This season Torvik projects 11 Big teams in the top 50.
(I don't nec agree, but that's just one man's computer nerd rankings)

so there's at least hope that the middle is much improved.
