I feel like the definite front-runner is Duke. Following in no order I would say UNC, Louisville, ND, and UVA.

    Everyone else, not so sure?

Louisville's first scrimmage is tomorrow at 7pm est vs Kentucky Weslyean broadcasting nationwide with 0 blackouts on WatchESPN (ACC Network Extra).

Starting 5 for the season is:
    Snider
    King
    Adel
    Spalding
    Mahmoud

The starting 5 is very powerful. Offense throughout the entire team has improved drastically. 7 foot freshman Center, Malik Williams, can drain a 3 at any given time. Apparently the only person who can't hit a 3 on the team is Mahmoud.

Mahmoud has gained weight and has become a supposed good shot blocker with Padgett coaching him up. Spalding has apparently approved greatly as well, and King.

I guess we'll see. It'd be hilarious if the NCAA cleared Bowen and he was allowed to play. I have no doubt that if the NCAA cleared him, then they'd play him.

The freshman have a lot of work, but the two you will see versus us the most will be Perry and Williams. Perry is a great defender and loves defense. Williams is just good.

I expect Louisville to have a great year, even without Pitino. The team is motivated, the coaches are motivated, and the fan base is ready.

    What about yall's teams?

Love the positivity, and I hope it translates. However, Bowen won’t be playing in a Cardinals jersey ever.

If Louisville still had Pitino, they would be my conference favorite. But without him, I've got them somewhere between 3-5.

By the way, I think you have to include Miami in that top 4-5 teams. They are loaded.

I think Lonnie Walker hurt his meniscus, but that was a couple months ago. I would expect him back before ACC play, though honestly I haven't heard.

Your program might be dirty, but I wouldn't say they are in the dirt just yet. And uou ain't trying if you ain't cheating, so I wouldn't call Louisville the devil either.

We are the cleanest program around now, we have zero NCAA issues with this team or coaches.

ND will be interesting. I think they have one of the 3 best players in the ACC in Bonzie Colson, who continues to work hard to add a 3 point shot to his game to stretch the defense out. He's hoping to have a great senior season and go out as an All American.

The guy that I think has a chance to be an all ACC guard as a senior is Matt Farrell. One of the best shooting point guards in the country and should be one of the leaders in assist / turnover ratio nationally as well, which is normal for a Brey coached PG.

The supporting cast is where the question marks come in. Rex Pflueger returns as a junior wing and is ND's best defender. He was the sixth man much of lady year and will be expected to up his offensive load in 2017-2018 now that he's a starter. He doesn't shoot it as well as VJ Beachem did, but he does a lot of other things well.

TJ Gibbs will be the other guard along with Farrell. Gibbs played major minutes last year as a freshman, but now he'll log an even heavier burden. He lost 17lbs over the spring-summer in order to get quicker, leaner and in better shape so that his legs don't leave him late in games. He's a fiery guy and a tenacious defender. Needs to keep working on his ability to score, especially when it comes to his 3 point game.

Martin Geben is back to start at center and we're hoping for some big improvement in his senior season. He had an excellent summer winning a gold medal with Lithuania in the World University Games, so we're hoping for a consistent lane presence.

The bench is a big question mark right now. We expect the first 3 into the game will be forward Elijah Burns, who expect a to see his first significant minutes as a junior. He's a dirty work type of guy who sets hard screens and rebounds. DJ Harvey, a highly touted freshman out of Dematha has a chance to make a huge impact as a scorer off the bench. He's a 6'6 guard / wing with excellent athleticism. Expect him to get better as the season progresses. Finally, the guy I'm most excited to watch develop is Canadian import Nik Djogo, who played high school ball with Thon Maker. Djogo is a big, strong, super athletic kid that I've had a number of coaches tell me has a similar game and upside to Nik Stauskas, who is from the same area in the GTA.

Overall, this year's team appears to be more athletic and should defend better and probably rebound better as well. I think they will take a step back in terms of their ability to score, however, and replacing two seniors who started for a combined 7 years will be really tough.

Expecting a top 4 finish in the ACC but wouldn't be surprised to see us finish 6th-7th as well.

    Great run down. Thanks.

I'll post one for FSU soon, just busy these next few days. For now, check out this Q&A with Coach Ham that's actually pretty insightful. More than your standard "coach speak."

This might be a stupid question but Pitino was supposed to serve a multi game suspension to start the ACC season after the whole strippergate deal. Does that suspension go away with Pitino or does it carry over to the new coach?

Louisville wins 101 to 64 vs Kentucky Wesleyan. Offense is great. The starts played just over 20 mins, but not much and during that time 7-10 from the 3, 21-32 fg with 18 assists on those 21 fg's.

Defense needs to be worked on. But overall when asked to step up the defense they did.

Padgett has given a green light on open shots "Idc if they go 0-50, if it's open and a good shot, shoot it." That was aimed towards a few freshmen who missed some but were good looks.

All in all, it's just exhibition but Im excited to see the season lift off.

He really is. Like I said, if Pitino was there I would be confidently predicting Louisville to finish with the best ACC record.

Dwayne Sutton scored 13 points in 10 minutes on 5-6 shooting? Surely Padgett has to play him more than 10 minutes.

They are pretty imbalanced. FSU, for the first time in a couple years, got an average or slightly easier than average schedule. Last couple years were brutal.

That said, the opening 5-6 games is very very tough. Hopefully the guys keep fighting because the closing stretch is quite manageable.

    Just an FYI, FSU plays:

    Big Boys:
    Duke once (away)
    UNC once (home)
    ND once (away...so that's a loss)
    UVA once (home)
    Louisville twice
    Miami twice

    Weaklings:
    Pitt once (home)
    NCSU once (away)
    BC twice
    Clemson twice

You think the Noles get in this season?
There's still good talent, but I am on the fence a bit.
    Huge frosh class ...
    Safe? Bubble?
9 doesn't sound too unrealistic for a deep conference..

Are there any non-con "must-wins", that you think, w/could help solidify a tourney berth?
Are there any "can't-lose" games in conference that w/could tank tourney dreams?

Course, FSU could turn out and end up 5th and this deep-thinking-lol-at-work could be for naught.

Did anyone see the Preseason Poll/All-ACC teams? It was published last week. I think UNC will be good, but 2nd seems a little high for me - I'm thinking in the 4-6 range. I find it interesting that Georgia Tech has a guy on the 1st Team and 2nd Team - and yet they're picked to finish 9th? Their depth certainly appears to be lacking, but if they do have two of the top 10 players, they should finish better than 9th. Also of note, Bonzie Colson was Preseason ACC POY and Marvin Bagley was voted as the Newcomer of the year.

ACC Operation Basketball 2017-18 Preseason Poll (First-place votes in parenthesis)
    1. Duke (57) - 1020
    2. North Carolina (7) - 921
    3. Notre Dame (4) - 852
    4. Miami (1) - 809
    5. Louisville - 733
    6. Virginia - 690
    7. Virginia Tech - 549
    8. Florida State – 519
    9. Georgia Tech - 468
    10. Syracuse - 420
    11. Wake Forest - 378
    12. NC State - 310
    13. Clemson - 289
    14. Boston College - 181
    15. Pittsburgh – 141

2017-18 Preseason All-ACC Team (votes in parenthesis)
    First Team
    Bonzie Colson, Notre Dame (64)
    Grayson Allen, Duke (60)
Joel Berry II, North Carolina (58)
    Marvin Bagley III, Duke (26)
    Ben Lammers, Georgia Tech (25)

    Second Team
    Bruce Brown Jr., Miami (22)
    Quentin Snider, Louisville (12)
    Deng Adel, Louisville (12)
    Josh Okogie, Georgia Tech (11)
    Jerome Robinson, Boston College (11)

Game was over before 10 minutes in. Snider only played I think 22 mins. Sutton is our 6th man for sure.

I think bubble is right. My guess is, it might come down to how our non-con SOS turns out. Have to win at least one of UF/Oklahoma State. Colorado State could be sneaky good too.

In conference, we cannot lose to BC or Pitt this year. Simply can't do it.

UNC and Duke are almost always 1-2 because of how many writers live on Tobacco Road.

Also, just an FYI, Okogie for GT just got hurt and might be out a good portion of season.

I agree UNC will be very hard pressed to finish second; their ACC schedule looks to be pretty brutal this year compared to the more favorable one they had last year, and that makes a big difference in a conference that does not have a round robin format.

For his sake, I agree. Never like to see guys hurt.

But for the conference it's bad news. GT gonna drop some OOC games they shouldn't because of Okogie being out and then come back and ruin some bubble team's resume in league play.

Speaking of Georgia Tech, the ACC has a long history of first year coaches surprising people with a strong showing in year one of two, but then struggling after that and finally doing so poorly they are fired around Year 5 (Steve Donahue, Dave Leitao, Steve Robinson, etc). Do you think that fate awaits Pastner, or will he be the real deal?

Oshae Brissett is going to be really good for Cuse. They’ll surprise some people (and follow it up by losing to Pittsburgh)

There are several freshmen that weren't top 100 recruits that I believe could have an impact this year:

    O'Shae Brisset, Syracuse
    Oliver Sarr, Wake Forest
    Nikola Djogo, Notre Dame
    Steffon Mitchell, Boston College
    Aamir Sims, Clemson
    Mfiondu Kabengele, Florida State
    Evan Cole, Georgia Tech
    Jose Alvarado, Georgia Tech

Also, watch out for the UVA redshirt freshmen, Jay Huff and DeAndre Hunter. They were top 100 recruits, but it may be easy to forget about guys like them that sat out the previous year.

YES. We've had some RIDICULOUSLY hard schedules of late... good to get a weak one.

The unbalanced schedule sucks, btw. It has been basically directly responsible for the regular season champ for a few seasons.

If some other contender has a much harder schedule sure, sure, why not? It doesn't change depending on who wins. An unbalanced schedule is an unbalanced schedule.

Yeah, I'm really excited about this kid. He was our best player in the white-orange team scrimmage and in the 1st exhibition game last night he scored 17 with 11 rebounds in 20 something minutes. National player of the year in Canada, but because he didnt play aau ball in the states, he flew under a lot of people's radar.
