No wonder so many Tarheels are jumping ship

You’d like that, wouldn’t you? Ha. The former makes A LOT more sense.

Well apparently Roy Williams doesnt like the direction of College Basketball is going, he never liked the one and done system. And soon NBA may be open for high schoolers to enter draft again, which makes recruiting quality players and keeping them stay much harder. Roy Williams' success relied on junior and seniors who were 5 star recruits convinced to stay with the school, this aint happening anymore in college basketball.

He never seemed to adjust to one and dones like other coaches. Coach K won a title in 2010 with a more traditional team full of upperclassmen, but then transitioned into going after One and dones heavy. Did Coach K even have a one and done player before Kyrie?

Roy's one and dones weren't that special and didn't really help him win. His championship in 2017 was an older team. The one and done player on that team wasn't a big part of their title; Tony Bradley. Roy was an A+ coach. One of the greatest to ever do it, but he never seemed to recruit as well as Calipari, Self and K, let alone losing other potential stars to other places.

I don't think Roy chose the OAD route. I think the times dictated the best players went that route.

Yet has had more success than Self and Cal, and was better than K while at Chapel Hill. Does it make him an even better coach?

He’s been better than those coaches since being at UNC.

True. But even though it became a rule in 2006 was it? Things didn’t really go crazy until 2010 when Cal sent 4 freshman in the first round. Cal and K have both been better since one and done went off the rails.

Have they? They all have one title and multiple final fours. And Williams dealt with an investigation - hampering recruiting for 7 years.

You know, it’s actually really close now that I look at the numbers for all 3.

Cal from the 2010-11 season to now:
304-90 .772 28-7 .800 4 final fours 1 title

Roy:
289-109 .726 23-9 .719 2 Final Fours 1 title

K:
302-82 .786 20-8 .714 1 final four 1 title

I actually can't blame Roy for retiring. He had enough dignity to not change the way he coached for decades in order to appease a group of misinformed and entitled players. The game has changed and he didn't want to change with it. Good for him.

K hasn't retired. But it could be argued that he has quit coaching.
