Last year Lipscomb made its NCAA tournament debut. 42 teams remain that have never made it to the Big Dance. So, who’s your pick to make it this year?

GCU will get there in the next 5 years.

Decent fan support, famous coach, and recruit seemingly as a Second Chance U for mid and high major players.

They’ll catch lightening in a bottle one year.

A lot of those schools have only been in Div 1 for a short time. Those teams need to pay their dues.

A school like Denver has been around Div 1 for a long time. I'd like to see a team like that get in.

Quinnipiac. Baker Dunleavy has the pedigree. Dad (mike) was NBA and college coach and he played for and coached with the best college coach of this generation; Jerold “Jay” Wright.

There are only 7 programs that have made the NCAAT in their first year of eligibility, most recently Northern Kentucky University, in 2017.

Since he left UK his winning percentage is 57%, in 11 seasons.

He won 65% of his games at Tulsa....70% at UGA....76% at UK...60% at Minny and Memphis. His stint at TT(47%) brought those post UK numbers down.

Overall he's won 597 games....67% of his games. So we can agree to disagree here.

Like I said, hasn't done anything significant since leaving UK. On top of the garbage winning percentage he went to 4 tournaments in those 11 years (3 first round losses and a 2nd round loss).

Tubby's issue isn't coaching. Its recruiting. ANd when you cannot recruit, winning at a place like Minny or TT, who are in really good conference's, is going to be tough,. Its why he strted to struggle at UK. If you cannot recruit, P5 conference's will eat you up. I don't care how good you can coach.
He won't have that issue at High Point. SMith can coach. He'll have HP in the NCAAT at some point.

Recruiting is part of the job, and Tubby despised it. So lazy on the recruiting trail, always has been. He would target a few players, put all his eggs in one basket, and when they went elsewhere he was left taking commitments from junk players that had no business playing at UK. Some guys didn't even have any other major offers. Laughing

Agree its part of the job...But just part of it. IMO, you don't win 600 games and a national title, by not being able to coach. If he gave two shits about recruiting---or at least hired someone who did, he'd probably have another title, and 100 more wins. I've always felt Tubby had well coached teams. Just simply didn't have the talent to compete in P5 conferences. IMO, Memphis made a huge mistake by firing him.

Hes a good coach. Just not elite. Or even high level. Just good. And thats why he couldn't survive his recruiting , or lack thereof, at a UK, Minny or TT.

I agree with all that. I think Tubby was canned strictly over James Wiseman. Memphis brass and boosters knew Tubby had no chance at him. The only way Memphis was going to get him was if they hired Penny. Penny was going to get that job regardless of whether it was this year or 3 years from now. I think Memphis probably would've liked for Penny to get a little more coaching experience first, but they had to make the move when they did simply because of Wiseman. I have a feeling Penny will turn out to be the next Pastner though. Get some blue chip recruits to commit then consistently underachieve with them.
