Big crowd in Atlanta to see who wins the Championship for Major League Soccer. We're underway.
15 minutes in, no score.
This is my first attempt at a soccer match thread and all I can come up with is "They kick it! Now the other team kicks it! Someone just crumpled to the floor like they've been shot! People are singing!"
Where do these fans disappear to during Braves, Hawks, or Falcons games?
Goalkeepers get their own jerseys. It'd be cool if someone with soccer know-how could explain how they get their own color scheme. Like, do they choose the colors themselves or is it dictated by FIFA or some other group? I have no idea and I've been watching this stuff on/off for years.
We've had some close calls, but still scoreless.
Some huge flags been waved about in the audience. No word on whether it's the same fans waving them the whole game or if they rotate between other fans.
26 minutes in and AUFC has another situation where they almost score, but can't make it work.
AUFC's jerseys kinda remind me of a red/black version of FC Barcelona of UEFACL.
Another shot, another save by the Timbers' goalkeeper. That should set up a corner kick.
Portland's goalkeeper has that all bright orange like he's Curry Man or something.
The corner goes nowhere and we continue with the back/forth. It's scoreless, but it's a busy scoreless if that makes any sense.
I like how when the ball winds up in the audience, they eagerly toss it back to the players like, "Nah y'all need this more than we do, this ain't baseball."
The referees' uniforms are what I imagine Wake Forest's team looks like.
Speaking of collegiate soccer, the NCAA National Championship is tomorrow night on ESPNU. That'll be Akron Vs. Maryland for what they call the College Cup and it'll be in Santa Barbara.
Last week, I was hoping to use the NCAA Women's National Championship as a nice primer to get warmed up on soccer match threads, but circumstances prevented that. The Women's College Cup was won by Florida State who beat traditional powerhouse and ACC foe North Carolina.
Just think, this same stadium is gonna play host to the Celebration Bowl next Saturday and if they have anything half as good as this crowd I'll be impressed.
AUFC draws first blood. 1-0 as we're at the 39 minute mark. Josef Martinez capitalizes on a Timbers boo-boo and strikes.
The audience begins singing. I bet those people are fun to be in a sports bar with.
Save by AUFC's goalkeeper!
The Timbers player that attempted the header goal landed on his right arm and he's not feeling too good.
Okay so Portland either has white uniforms or minty green ones depending on what camera's being used. That's freaky.
We're at 45 minutes and stoppage.
Halftime in Atlanta and Josef Martinez' goal is our score, 1-0 AUFC leads.
I knew when that goalie stepped out Josef was going to score.
1994 Alexi Lalas laughs at 2018 Alexi Lalas's hair.
MLS reminds the viewer that if we DVR this or something they'll violate our pet raccoon or whatever.
Yeah Atl has a lot of support for their club.
I believe that it shocked a lot of folks.
I sort of wish that they had their own venue. Soccer looks weird on field turf. I liked watching the games at Bobby-Dodd better. I actually considered going to a match there last year.
I really like Martinez's and Almirón's play. Both should be playing in Europe somewhere.
Commissioner Garber refers to today's crowd as 70k strong and I believe it.
The 2nd Half is underway.
That's ruled a corner kick and AUFC's goalkeeper yells a word I no longer feel comfortable typing here.
The Timbers aren't able to do anything with it. 1-0 AUFC as we're 52 minutes in.
AUFC increases their to 2-0 after the free kick leads to Portland having no answer for Escobar.
Commentary notes that in AUFC's 2 year existence, they have never surrendered a 2-0 lead.
Ebobisse is replaced by Melano for the Timbers. It's like baseball where once you're subbed out, you're done for the rest of the contest.
1 half hour and stoppage remaining. AUFC leads 2-0.
Another close call and the Timbers just can't get their shots by the goalkeeper.
Portland has a fun crowd last I remember. During home games, the place is packed and there's a lumberjack ready to saw a log whenever their team scores.
Guzan, AUFC's goalkeeper has had a busy night, but he's still pitching a shutout. 65 minutes in now.
Another Timbers shot, another Guzan save.
It's a good thing soccer doesn't have backcourt violations.
I'm a bit late on the post.......... but that was a great goal.
Asprilla replaces Polo for the Timbers. That's their 2nd substitution this match.
