Love Duke but really most of his parts were pretty similar. My favorites, The Quiet Man, Donovan's Reef, Rio Bravo, El Dorado & McClintock.

Wayne, despite his shortcomings he never became a caricature of himself.

That's because he wore his politics on his shoulder. His brand of Conservatism didn't lend itself to humor or self-deprecation. Arnold, on the other hand, could laugh at himself a bit and it lead him to the Governorship of California. Think The Duke could have pulled that one off ? Laughing

Fair enough, Arnold could do comedy. I think both did very well with what they had, enough to become icons. Often the more entertaining performers are not the most talented.

It just so happens that I was listening to a debate on the radio today about action movies. The made a good point. There was a period from the mid 80's to the early 90's where people went an paid good money to see bad action movies, knowing full well that they wouldn't be "Citizen Kane".......... but if Arnold, or Sly Stallone, or Van Damme, or a handful of others played the lead, that movie was going to be box office gold no matter what.

You could say the same about Dwayne Johnson movies today. Pretty much the same model, action hero that can also be self deprecating. He pretty much fills that entire role today. all the other action movie actors we have these days are all the brooding type. Those that only have two ways of delivering a line; either an intense whisper or ANGRY SHOUTING!

Most acting in movies prior to 1970 was shit. Ernest Borgnine being the exception

I think his acting got much better in his later films. In his early films he had a monotone delivery which he finally got rid of. Quiet man was one of the best of his films even being an earlier one. Maureen O’Hara being in it sure dudn’t hurt. One of the most beautiful women ever.
