Self vs Coach K.

Both teams have question marks regarding their ability to shoot the ball.

Duke is very talented but very young. How good is Jones without Zion, Reddish and Barrett? How good is Dukes post play?

Has KU improved its outside shooting which was dreadful last year? How much has Ochai improved and how much does having Dok back change the shooting aspect because of how much attention he gets? What does DeSousa look like? KU should be stout defensively but how does the offense preform?

Fired up!

I have it on good authority K had planned to retire last year after winning his sixth and sending Zion to the NBA. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen. So he is begrudgingly back and chasing that elusive title. Honestly, Duke will be lucky to get out of the 1st round this year. Word on the Durham streets is the team is rife with internal conflicts.

sorry @LetsGoDuke301

This is a game thread. None of this blabber is remotely relevant to the intended discussion. I feel sad for you.

There are a whole lot of questions regarding Duke. I suspect the only reason why they are ranked 4th is for the ratings. Kind of looking forward to a game against an elite opponent with little expectations.

Good luck.

Haven't followed Duke that closely, but it seems that their starting five will struggle to shoot from outside. I think for them to win, they'll need someone to get hot.

Or maybe they'll muddy everything up with strong perimeter defense and grind out a low-scoring win. Who can tell.

I think we should win...but that doesn't mean Im confident. I think it will be a fairly close game all the way to the end unless one of us is ice cold from deep. Then it can look uglier than it actually was.

We will probably struggle to score. Our defense will be ahead of our offense to start the season unlike most seasons when our freshmen got better on defense later in the year. I picked Duke to win (of course) but wouldn’t be shocked if Kansas abuses us downlow. Hopefully with less pressure on this team, they could actually play without a big(ger) target on their backs.

I feel like K will play some zone to see how hot or cold we are from outside. If we are missing, he will stay in it as long as he can. I am not real confident in our shooters this early. I think our front court looks to be about the best in the country, and that is where we will play the offense through the majority of the time.

^Im a little nervous about the new officiating changes and the refs blowing our bigs for violations every other trip.

Per ESPN:

Three blue bloods and an upstart have the best odds to win the national championship as the college basketball season tips off.

Michigan State is the consensus national title favorite. The Spartans are 11-2 at Caesars Sportsbook, followed by Kansas and Kentucky at 6-1, and Memphis at 8-1. Duke and Louisville are 10-1, and North Carolina is 13-1.

No. 1 Michigan State opens its season Tuesday against No. 2 Kentucky in the second game of a doubleheader in the Champions Classic at Madison Square Garden (9:30 p.m. ET, ESPN). The Spartans are 2.5-point favorites. No. 3 Kansas and No. 4 Duke collide in the first game (7 p.m. ET, ESPN). The Jayhawks are 2-point favorites.

More money has been bet on Michigan State to win the national championship than on any other team at Caesars Sportsbook.

My main concern in this game is that K takes the Hack-a-Shaq approach.

Azubuike was said to have improved his shot, and there were even videos of him hitting threes in the offseason, but he's not showing a lot of improvement in games.

Tell us how many DES had with how many top 50 NBA players, no classes to attend and the 100 dollar handshakes.

Oh yeah, 2.

So KU is now a 2 point favorite?

Duke is going to play a lot of 2-3 zone and dare Kansas to beat them from deep. If ku is hitting 3’s this will be a long game for duke because they will struggle to score against ku. Garrett should lock down the top shooter and anything close inside will be dok and Silvio’s area. I see hurt having a good game with his midrange jumper but delauria and Casey will be non factors. I think ku makes enough 3’s and enough alley oops to make it a 10 point victory. But again this could be a one possession game or a ku rout. The only scenario I don’t see is a duke rout.

I am probably way, way wrong...But I do not think this one is close. I mean Duke very seldom gets shellacked...So there is that. Plus, well, they have that one dude coaching; He's won a few games. Also, they have some talent. I just look at Kansas and think--Duke or not, on paper, this should be somewhat of a lopsided game.

I dunno.

I'll say KU 77-62

I’m trying to be optimistic but I kinda feel the same way. I think this game could get ugly.

It’s how I feel as well. Kansas is just so stacked in the front court and that plays to Self’s ability as a coach. Should be a fun season.

I wouldn't be surprised if Duke has a guy pop off for 5 or 6 threes out of the wild blue yonder.

Flip side, I'm guessing Cassius Winston will have Hagans in foul trouble early as well.

I've always said you out kicked your coverage.

your wife is awesome. I know you know this but everyone here should know the UK half is the better half of your whole. Winking
Lurk, you do know that pic isn't my wife----right?
