Saw him as John Cougar Mellencamp 1983ish Dothan, Alabama. Good show, expected torn bluejeans and penny loafers. He and his whole band were in tux and tails. Lol
A guy I used to work with said he had "Diane" from Jack and Diane for a HS teacher in Scottsburg Indiana. They used to sing this song and she would lose her damn mind. "sucking on chili dog outside the tasty freeze."
Big fan here! I've seen him 3 times: 1981 in Orlando, early 1990s @ Farm Aid in Ames and 2015 in Cincinnati.
I remember him as Johnny Cougar from the 1970's. Of course that was when he was doing clubs and hadn't hit the big time yet.
Probably my favorite rendition of Hey Porter. The link should start at 15:43
When I hear his name, this is the first song I think of.
He did a crossroads with Darius Rucker..I thought it was pretty good. Nostalgic.
"Aint that America..home of the free...little pink houses for you and me."
I would have to say I like his work more now than I did growing up.
I was thinking the same thing.
Now I am on a bender downloading his songs!
Where do Casabas and Honeydews go for the summer?
A true national treasure.
Answer: The John Cougar Melon Camp

Ill toss this in there since I remember it as a kid and loved it long before I even knew who Van Morrison was.
Remember when MTV held a contest and the prize was a house in Indiana that you and your friends have to paint pink?
I like some of his catchy little tunes:
Ok, I have to ask; What is the significance or meaning..whatever, of "little pink houses.." lyric?
