Who would be on your short list of coaches you would like to have as your new coach?

As far as Louisville goes, my top choice would be Sean Miller but i couldn't realistically see him hired away from Zona. Coaching at Louisville would give him more exposure but it would only be a lateral move for coach Sean Miller.

I think his recruiting is great and has only been second to cal since he's been at zona. His teams have been loaded every year and if he did that at Louisville the fanbase would go crazy. He is also young and has alot of coaching ahead of him.

It would be a damn short career and I'm unprepared mentally for such a scenario.

Would be interesting if Miller retired at age 46.

And no, Miller isn't going anywhere, not even duke or Kentucky, especially if he goes to a final 4 this year. No other program can offer him anything that Arizona can't from facilities, pay, exposure, can base, recruiting. And who wants to live in Louisville in the winter when you can live in a palatial house in the Tucson foothills and it be 80 degrees in January...

I'm terrified about the day Cal leaves. At least if it's in the next three years. The best options are either at jobs they likely wouldn't leave (Miller, Self, Donovan) or are good coaches but we have no idea if they can handle everything that comes with the UK job (Stevens, Smart, Marshall).

Tom Izzo has been a weird name around UK in the past. There are folks around the program who will swear on their lives that if he doesn't upset UL to go to the Final Four in 2009 that he's our coach right now. But that was six years ago. You wonder if that would even be an avenue they would pursue this time, and I kind of doubt it personally.

Whoever it is you're likely going to be rolling the dice. I think you have to take a chance on Gregg Marshall or Brad Stevens and see if this job overwhelms them. And, well, see if they even accept it. I'm pretty confident Marshall would in a heart beat.

Probably the dude from UNI, Jacobson, or some other mid major coach who is coaching well.

No freaking clue. But if Roy keeps putting a team out on the court like he is now for another year or two? UNC will need to start looking for a replacement.

Sean Miller since he's already considered leaving Zona to become one of our assistants under Self.

    Sean Miller
The last time he came up we went .... "camping" together. He said anytime I needed anything, just give him a call and he'd drop everything. Thankfully I haven't lost that number. Never know when Bill might jump.

    1. Unreachables -- Cal/Hoiberg/Donovan (in that order)
    2. Danny Manning
    3. Turgeon -- bigger gap btwn 2/3 than 1/2
    4. Pearl -- I don't give a rat's ass what you think of the guy, mmm k?
    5. Marshall -- For reals, only really want this to happen so I could see faces of Shocker Nation.

    1-Donovan
    2-Hoiberg
    3-Miller

All 3 would be difficult to unseat, but there is no doubt they would listen if Kansas came calling. It's a historic job and you get to coach in the best gym money can't buy.

I think he would go to UK, UM or Duke before IU. Just an honest opinion.

I think it will go to someone who coached under K, most likely Capel since he is associate head coach already. I would like to see Stevens take the job, I really believe it is his dream job and he would jump at the chance- but that's just my opinion.

    1. Not sure if true - not familiar with UA's facilities, they may be top tier for all I know
    2. Not true. I know UA has comparable resources, but there's a difference between having them and being willing to go above the entire rest of the market.
    3. Definitely not true.
    4. Even more definitely not true.
    5. Also not quite true, but way way closer than 3 and 4.

Well, I think he would. Maybe a few years ago. I just think Crean has honestly driven that program so far down it MIGHT (not saying for sure) be hard to get back out of the hole. Recruits, media, bloggers etc kind of rarely mention IU nowadays.

Hmm, I'm going to list them in simply the order I would want them regardless of how likely, then immediately state how unlikely it realistically is.

    1. Cal-Love the guy and think he is just the best in the business right now. Obviously it isn't going to happen.
    2. Miller-He recruits at a high level and is a very good coach. Probably not going to happen either.
    3. Pearl-I think he would kill it recruiting at a big time school and is one of the best in the business at making players better IMO. UNC would never do it though.
    4. Donovan-I just think he is a great coach and recruiter. I have no idea on how possible this would be.
    5. Hoiberg-I think he is a very good coach, though his lack of success on the road is a little concerning.
    6. Stevens-I like guys with NBA experience, especially with regards to spacing and various techniques you don't see in college ball enough.

I'm not sure after that. I think Self is a great coach but that one is so illogical for a number of reasons it wasn't worth mentioning. I'm not nearly as big on Smart as most other people Marshall just seems like a jerk.

I'm on the Pearl wagon, too. He would kick ass at UK. Don't know that Cal would like it, but..

Also agree with Cory on Marshall. If he went to UK, it would be like a way toned down version of Gillispie, imo. Gotta be personable for the really big jobs. Or, if your fanbase is a bunch of a holes anyways, then being Bobby Knight is fine, too. [IMG]

Players love to play for coach pearl. Tennessee would be a top ten program today if he was still there.

Haha, Cal would most definitely not like it. Some of their back and forth at UT and Memphis was pretty great down here in Tennessee. Time has a way of toning down all that stuff though.

Pearl has the personality to be successful at UK. He's a very good recruiter. He took Tennessee to the #1 rankings and multiple seasons ranked in the top 10-15. I think he could do great things somewhere like UK, UNC, Kansas, etc where the resources are limitless.

His past with the NCAA may be cause for concern, but just like Cal and the target everyone assumes he has on his back, I think he'd know that the things he did elsewhere wouldn't be necessary at one of those caliber schools.

Did you know Stevens grew up in Indiana, grew up an Indiana fan, his dad played FB at IU, went to school in indy, worked in indy, coached in indy, his wife is from indy, she grew up in indy, went to school in indy, worked in indy? BTW Crean won the first B1G championship for IU since 2002, first out right since 1993? The board of trustees if anything set the program back.

Yeah, I know he grew up in Indiana. Still not gonna happen. He would not leave the Celtics to come back to IU...Duke, UK, UNC etc? Maybe...

And yes, Crean won a B1G...but I would think, being a former traditional power you guys would be more concerned with Tournament success, final fours and titles...which you have not even been close to getting since 2002. Crean is at fault there. Trust me, I know how it is. We went thru it in the latter years of Tubby and BCG. But we did something about it. They both got booted. Now we are are in the discussion for a FF and Title run for the 4th time in the last 5 years.

    See the difference?

What is the obsession with Sean Miller? He has accomplished so much less than the other great coaches in college basketball. He has never even been to the Final Four. Sure, he recruits well but that doesn't result in anything come tournament time. I just don't get it.

I kind of agree. He really hasnt done a LOT to prove he is worthy of a destination coaching job.

I don't think he leaves unless he wants to go back to college, if that is going to happen, IU will know about it and IU will go hard after him. If all 4 are up for a new coach, brad stevens is available, he goes to IU over those 3, guaranteed. And I know exactly what you're saying, but I still put blame on the Trustees. They are the ones who hired Davis, then Sampson, then Crean. Not to mention hanging onto Knight for too long, he basically mailed it in his last 5 or so years. I'm not sure they truly have the programs best interest in mind anymore.

Let's be honest with ourselves here.

To say that Arizona can offer the equivalent of facilities (no), pay (Cal makes 3x as much before bonuses, imagine how much UK would pay to steal someone like him), exposure (UK is by far the most watched team, in fact, the same amount of people watched UK beat Auburn by 35 as DukevClemson AND ULvMiami), fan base (really...)

    Recruiting is equal kinda though.

Great recruiter, has had solid regular season success (unlike Barnes/Pastner types), and in the tournament with the one game format, there are tons of great coaches who have had a "can he ever break through?" period before they went on to dominate.

One game format over six games - anything can happen. No good reason to think he's just magically unable to get past that e8 barrier.
