If you broke a major law and got away. Would you turn yourself in

Say a fatal hit and run or something similar. Would you be able to deal with the guilt or would you turn yourself in. Regardless of the victim and other variables.

I think most people would turn themselves in very soon and most of the rest eventually. It would be hard trying to live with it....never knowing if/when it will come out.

I would never have run from the scene. I would accept the blame and the consequences and be very sad I had harmed someone.

Guilt has overcome me. I confess,. I posted a boob awhile back. It was quite small and most of the boob hounds around here missed it. I beg mercy! ;)

Ps. I would probably turn myself in.

Yes. I’m the guy who gives back the cashier the additional change she gives me when she makes a mistake. Also the guy who picks up a hundred dollar bill someone drops and returns to them. Schmuck or not it’s how I was raised. :(

The closest I ever came to doing something seriously bad was when I was at the Fed.

Knew how to boost $85.000.000 in cash and remember this was 35 years ago.

Would have to move to another country. I am sure I would have turned myself in about at this age

I knew someone with this story. He was my assistant supervisor when I first started working. He went out drinking with some guys from work, ran off the road on the way home and killed someone on a bus bench. He tried to hide it. Seems like they found out a few days later and he went to jail for a few years. Returned to work at the same company. It was never discussed. I'm not sure how many people knew about it. He was pretty much a shell of his former self.

I wouldn't run in the first place but assuming I had a brain fart and did and weeks, months, maybe longer passed and I felt I was in the clear, I just can't see me turning myself in.

Sure, the guilt would be strong, so would be the fear of being caught and punished too. I just don't see how turning myself in would make me feel any better or help the situation other than the victim's family finally getting a name and face to hate on. My family would be hurt big time financially and by my extended absence.

Sucky situation either way but I'm not going to make it even worse for myself if I thought I had gotten away with it.

A common theme in dreams I have is that I have murdered somebody but the dream always starts after the fact. I never actually kill or see the victim in my dream. I'll have hidden the body somewhere temporarily like in a nearby shallow grave and one dream it was in a stone walled well on my property. I'm left trying to figure out how to better dispose of the body.

It's a rough dream because in it I realize I have to run from this crime for the rest of my life or at least until I get caught however long that will take. I feel pretty certain that eventually the walls will close in and I'll be caught. I keep hammering on myself as to why, why, why would I do this? My life in ruined.

Then I wake up and it's like I'm Ebeneezer Scrooge on Christmas morning. I realize it was all a dream, that I get another chance, and it's the greatest feeling.

I've had this same kind of dream many times over the past ten years or so.

We all have a inbred sense of right and wrong since Cain and Abel. Some have deadened consciousness and no remorse. Most of us would be difficult to live with if our conscious had life.

I heard of a road rage shooting at night time when a car pulled over and the following car stopped behind. Father of an infant in the car was killed. The perpetrator has never been found or has turned himself in. Wonder about the condition of his conscious?

The East Area Rapist in Northern California in the 70's and 80's was recently caught. He appeared to have no remorse after all these years.

If you are asking if I’d go to jail on purpose when there is an option of not going to jail, then I would choose not going to jail every time.

Killing a person carries a lot of guilt.
Other crimes, embezzlement, for example, a lot of people can live happily with.
My work deals with white collar crimes. I can tell you many of those offenders def. wouldn't turn themselves in.

No. If I broke any major law it would be intentional and I would have already made peace with my decision prior to my felonious activity.

I think it would depend entirely on your reasoning for the crime. If it was a fatality accident, I probably wouldn't leave to begin with but if I did I'd probably turn myself in.

If, for example, someone threatened your family and the threat was so real a possibility that you considered it likely, I think I wouldn't have any problem killing that person to prevent the likely harm, and then concealing the crime (or my involvement in it) and never saying a word at all. If arrested, I'd never even talk to police, much less confess to the crime.

Exactly. In the case of an accidental hit and run or something, I'd punish myself way more appropriately than any court.

Had a similar discussion with my buddy recently. His former business partner is a pretty giant POS. Stole from the business then sabotaged it. Then, drains all the money from his ex wife's account, hacked her emails, shut off her phone and called child services on her (they have 4 kids together). Then, marries an unsuspecting girl from parading around as a super religious guy then divorces her. Finds another girl and is about to ruin her life.

When he was 19 or 20, kidnapped a neighborhood kid with 2 other guys and tortured him for 3 days. Did almost a year in prison for that.

The question for my buddy was, if he could get away with murdering him, would he?

To the OP's question, I'll just say, self-preservation would probably take over despite what I think I would do. That and I'm too pretty for prison.
