You guys are, per Kenpom, the best team in the country at drawing fouls and Edey has been called for 1 or 0 fouls in 8 of the last 10. I think the refs have been ok to Purdue this season.
Didn’t watch, did you?

He's the NPOY at the moment and it's not particularly close, imo.

It’s almost like Purdue plays very passive defense and guys are terrified to try to challenge Edey and go into his chest to draw fouls.

Edey averages almost identical FT’s per game to Kofi last year, yet averages 0.6 less fouls per game.

I’d say he gets a pretty fair whistle.

I wasn’t complaining about his whistle. I was stating why he doesn’t pick up a lot of fouls.

I think he - and Kofi and some other freaks before them - should get more calls than they do with the way people beat on them. I’ve made my points known about how poorly I think the entire college game is officiated wrt to defensive physicality.

Defensively, he just doesn’t foul much. And Purdue just generally doesn’t allow a lot of shots at the rim or in the paint which limit a lot of opportunities for him to get called. Both because guys are scared of Edey, and because we’re susceptible in the mid-range due to some scheming and just limitations in terms of our defensive personnel’s ability to challenge those shots. Look at our defensive chart of FGA% - we give up fewer looks in the paint and at the rim and higher in the mid-range.

For example: The dudes that MSU put at center today attempted 2 total shots, one of which was when edey was on the bench. You’re not gonna draw fouls on the guy doing that.

Oh no doubt on this part. I think it’s tough on referees just because a lot of what they call is based on displacement, which inherently benefits the small and weaker players.

But at the same time, it’s a ‘good problem’ to have because the amount of times the size and strength Edey has will help him get a bucket or rebound outweighs the amount of fouls the ref miss do him not being moved by a ‘weaker’ foul.

It’s the reason why guys like Shaq and Lebron complain about reffing their entire careers in the NBA.

I didn’t get to catch your games vs Duke or Gonzaga in the non-conference so I have no idea who Edey matched up with. But I will be interested to see if this holds up as Purdue starts playing the more elite centers in the conference.

Omoruyi gave him more issues than others you’ve played so far, but even he was still pretty inefficient. He did manage to get Edey 3 fouls, which is more than pretty much any game I’ve caught so far.

Watching him play against Dickinson, TJD, or even Dainja and Crawl, it’ll be interesting to see if holds up in those matchups as well. Averaging 1.7 fouls per game is wildly low for a guy who plays 31 minutes a game.

The lack of stud centers we’ve played so far does probably contribute.

I think the bigger factors are that he’s simply good at not fouling and Purdue protects him on that side. I already mentioned opponent shot charts, but he’s in drop coverage so much - because of his own mobility issues - that it helps him stay in position and get back down low to rim protect. Then he doesn’t need to swipe down to go for blocks bc of his size.

It all contributes to a guy that just doesn’t foul much.

Also if you watch Purdue as a whole, we just don’t foul much defensively. We don’t pressure the ball much, we don’t reach or gamble for turnovers (stats back that up, we don’t turn people over at all), we don’t play physical on the perimeter at all, and other than edey we don’t really go for many blocks either.

Just a team that plays solid defense, is good in help, and kind of gives up the pull-up game…all to help cover some of our physical limitations and to protect edey down low.

Our defensive fouling and opponent free throw stats are absolutely elite. Which is nice because we’re not some great defensive team at all, so not giving up freebies is huge.

id anyone see the play where he pinned the defender's arm down and slung him to the ground? Clear foul on Edey with potential for level one or two.

They called the foul on the msu player.

Already been discussed. It was a foul on Sissoko that the ref called late.

Nope. If anything, we hope the refs start calling it tight. Looking forward to Edey shooting 50 FTs and fouling out every team’s front court by halftime.
Lol, at least you admit that you don't have a clue regarding the rules.

Can’t take credit for this:

According to Bart Torvik:
  • Teams attempt only 24.3%of their shots against Purdue as "close 2s".
    • This is second lowest in the country behind Iowa St. at 22.5%
    • The national median for defenses is 36.2%
  • Teams attempt 38.8%of their shots against Purdue as "further 2s"
    • This is highest in the country
    • The national median for defenses is 25.7%
  • Teams attempt 3.1% as dunks (but let's be honest, none of those are on Edey typically - mostly transition)
So the numbers (along with the eye test) say that teams aren't coming at Edey, giving him fewer opportunities to foul.

-----

Let's take another B1G big man - TJD. He averages 2.2 fouls called per 40 while Zach's is slightly lower at 2.0/40. Not a huge difference.

Teams attempt 6.6% dunks and 35.2% close twosagainst IU. That's 41.8% of opponents shots at or near the basket. For Purdue, that number is 27.4%

So Indiana's opponents are attempting 14.4% more of their shots at or near the basket, and TJD is getting called for 0.2 fouls per 40 more than Edey

Edit: Also, Sissoko didn’t attempt a single shot last night…and your team fcking blows. Go back to the potato patch where you came from.
