I have to go to Atlanta for work at the end of August. Any of you peaches have any advice for things to not miss? I'll be near Georgia Tech, but will have a car so I can travel a bit.

I already checked and the Braves are out of town that week.

Yeah, I wasn't thrilled about this when my boss told me. I was in New Orleans in January, Chicago in March, and now this?

    GA Tech FB game possibly?
    Atlantic Station is close by
McKendrick's (pricy steakhouse) in Dunwoody is great. 10 mi. north.
    The Aquarium
    Buckhead
High museum; Midtown, a short train ride away.
    Chastain park Amphitheatre
The Varsity is across connector hwy from GT campus..real close. (more for the tradition than food)
Swan House/Atlanta history center in Buckhead

    Do you play golf?

Near GT, definately go to the Aquarium. I enjoyed it greatly even though I see a lot of the stuff in the wild.

So the Battery by the new Braves stadium is fun...I've heard.

You could go to the Aquarium.

You could go north to Kennesaw and check out some of the Civil War stuff there.

You could go about 45 mins -1 hour out east to St Mountain.

I'd go to Bones for steaks but there's a lot of good food in Atlanta you can't go wrong.

The Varsity is a legendary restaurant there.
My parents claim they saw Ted Turner pick up food there once in person.

    "What'll ya have?"

I’d hit up Ponce City Market and get an H&F burger. Then walk the beltline until you get to Krog Market and eat/drink there. Lady Bird is a good drinking spot on that path too.

Back in my window washing days I saw Ted on two occasions. The first was we were doing window resurfacing on CNN Center. We load up these grinders, equipment and all our crap, get out on the stage and lower it to the first set of windows. Right on the other side, like could smack the back of his head if there wasn't a window, sat Ted, some chick and some dude. My buddy and I panicked and did the entire set of those windows by hand. Ted kept glancing out at us like he was going to either hope we fell, fire us or maybe just a nod of approval.

On the roof, and you can't see it from the ground, is an apartment. There may be a hatch inside the CNN Center to get into it but it's clearly a private apartment hardly anyone is supposed to know about it. I'm walking over to check something out, spot this apartment and suddenly realize, that mofo is tapping ass in there because he comes out doing the stand and soak in the sun and some scantily clad lady was hovering beside him. I chickened out and took off because I didn't want him to see me and kick me off the building.

Aquarium is definitely cool, Coke museum is pretty boring tbh, college football hof is phenomenal tho. The bar/pub next door (Stats I think) is a good spot too.

That's crazy. Atlanta is packed full of smoking hot trim. There are some obvious gay bar areas but if you're a single dude with some money, you can have a lot of fun in Midtown or Buckhead.

Lived there 10 yrs, mostly in city and not one incident. Every major city has the exact same problems w/very few exceptions.

Dive Bar and Big Sky are two decent bars I’ve been to in Atlanta. I like Dive Bar more but both were solid bars.

I used to work with a gay dude that told me Atlanta was the gay capital especially for black men. I just assumed he knew what he was talking about.

Go to Alpharetta to a wine and cheese event and watch pretentious folk kissing each other's asses and then gossiping afterward.

I'm guessing that a lot of the south isn't (wasn't at least) very accepting of gay lifestyle, so Atlanta probably attracted a lot of them. Just like up here, if you were gay and grew up in Zanesville, you'd probably move to Columbus.

Went there about a month ago ... CFB hall of fame was a disappointment. Got into some areas that weren't great. Did hit a pretty good restaurant a few blocks down from the hall of fame. Not a city on the level of Chicago, New York or Cleveland but some decent stuff to do. There is a ferris wheel.

I think Atlanta is considered one of the most, if not the most gay friendly city in the south.

Not a family around that didn't have that "spinster" aunt or uncle that never seemed to marry. In the south we just embraced them as "different" and went right on.

Stay in your hotel room and watch 'Crisley Knows Best' and 'ATL'.

Recent ATL guys..how is Virginia Highlands/Ponce area these days? I heard about a big revitalization project/retail expansion in this area.

Do we include Key West as south? That might give Atlanta a run for that title.

There are those people, but usually those people are the ones that haven't really fully "embraced" who they were.

Were you born and bred in the south?

If not, then you are unlikely to understand that we fully knew what the situation was, we just didn't discuss it. No one was made to feel uncomfortable.

If you're near GT there is a courtyard Marriott I think on 11th st. Atlantic Station is near that area. Plenty of food and a bit of shopping if that's your thing. Stone Mountain is on the other side of atlanta if you want to check out outdoors stuff. Could always check to see about a falcon preseason game if they are in town.

I did not. I grew up in a rural environment where there were people in HS that "weren't gay" and older people that lived alone their whole life (spinsters as you put it).

A lot of those "not gay" people ended up being gay in a bigger city, but it has become more acceptable for the most part since then, too.
