Please explain why being called a POG is derogatory.

Trying to describe it to the Mrs and I don't think I'm doing a good job of conveying why it is/was used as a derogatory term within the combat arms. TIA

I'm not even sure most POGs get it.

That's pretty much how I explained it but she didn't understand. She didn't understand how that could be used in a derogatory manner yet motivating as well.

Tried to explain the subcultures within the military, which she understands but she is focused on how every soldier goes through basic training and thus thinks they all still deal with the same stuff.

Never thought POG’s as pieces of garbage, especially the medics. Medics suffer from PTSD more than most, fact. Anyhoo, here’s us...

Dude came home, signed up for classes at university of alabama in Mobile, worked in his dad's logging business, while starting his own sheetrock business, graduated in 56, then went to work in,the new computer room , as a computer programmer in 1958 at Monsanto in Pensacola. Dragged his family out of abject poverty by himself.

Broke his hip last Saturday night. Has missed watching Alabama football for the first 2 times in 60 + years.

Support people are the special teams of the military....

Now it was usually pogue when I was in. Pogue were the young cabin boys on ships in the old days... Wanna guess why candy is called poguey bait?

I was reading through a Battle Drills manual as we prepped to head into Bosnia (was Force Protection NCOIC for a maintenance CO.) Some radio repair guy says the usual "I coulda been a grunt." "Yeah? I coulda been a radio repair guy. The difference is if I'm havIng trouble I can't pull a dash 10 out and look for answers."

Support people compare themselves to grunts. Grunts don't ccomore themselves to others.

11 Bravo here. I used it as a slur when I was in. Now that I'm older I understand everyone has their role to play. Granted some MOS's are harder than others but I appreciate anyone who served at any capacity now.

The grunts came up with the term POG (hence the low ASVAB score) failing to realize that without them they themselves couldn't function

It’s derogatory because it’s disrespectful. Combat arms guys aren’t the only people who engage in combat nor are they the only people who get killed by the enemy. It’s something grunts have always used to kind of demean people who aren’t infantry, engineers or armor etc.. I even used the term too .. until I actually went to real combat. I stopped using it then.

Any combat arms guy who uses that term is a idiot .
I was a combat engineer , but if you think for a minute your little engineer, Infantry, armor, cavalry or artillery units would been able to do jack without the non combat arms folks you are crazy.

The US is the best fighting force in the world because every single combat arms troop has about 15 other troops supporting him in some way. No other military has that. I dare anyone to go into war without our medics, supply, intel, Geospatial, signal, personnel , transportation, maintenance, aviation, and chemical units. We would get mopped up by some of the people we fight. The fact that we can deploy anywhere in the world with fully functioning logistics.. and sustain that.. is what sets us apart from the enemy.

Very well said and I fully agree. The main point was trying to convey to the wifey why combat soldiers e.g. infantry, tankers, cavalry call each other a POG as diss or sergeants use it as a motivating tool to get privates to push themselves.

I think we all know some non combat arms troops that have Purple Hearts, were killed, or got into firefights. I know I do. I also know some 11 Bravos who spent the entire deployment working in an S-3 shop.. NEVER going on patrol... yet... being awarded the Combat Infantryman badge when in reality... the female MP doing route clearance actually engaged the enemy more than you.. and all she got was a pat on the back.

Wrong. It’s more like getting to hit and score the runs and not really play defense.

Infantrymen are puppets . The Engineers clear a path for you. The Cavalry has to see for you. Signal allows you to communicate. Intel knows more about your mission than you do. They tell you everything you know about your enemy. The topo guys provide all your maps. The artillery pretty blows up everything before you even get to it. The FSB is feeding you, giving you ammo, even transporting you half the time. The PSB is keeping all your paperwork and affairs in order. EOD is making sure your routes are clear and disposing bombs. The med guys are saving your lives. Maintenance guys make sure you can move. ADA guys are preventing anything from flying in the air while you are on a mission. The SF, Delta and Rangers get all the real missions. Regular infantry guys just do mop up duty... with the help of mommy and daddy!

    WTF do y’all really do??
Y’all are more like spoiled children who need mommy to spoon feed them and coddle them.

INFANTry- Grown men who need other grown men and women to make them appear to be great lol
