I heard one of the sports radio guys for FSU state that Coach Willy needed 8 wins this year in order to get two more years there. Can FSU find 8 wins this year?

    Yes

    Louisiana-Monroe
    Louisville
    Wake Forest
    Alabama State

    Tossups versus:

    Boise State
    NC State
    Syracuse
    Boston College

    Hmmm...on second thought...

Syarcuse took "the greatest team in the history of all sports ever" down to the final play of the game. Syracuse won't be a "tossup", the Orangemen will crush FSU by a minimum of 186 points.

Yes and maybe 9. I think you will see FSU with a new attitude in 2019

The only game on the schedule which is a definite loss is at Clemson. I think FSU wins 8 or 9 in the regular season. It’s a very manageable schedule.

    Wow.

I thought OUR game with Syracuse was close. I didn't know they played the greatest team ever, too.

I gotta hand it to the Orangemen, they're tough.

Without seeing their QB play, who knows?

But 8-4 in the ACC is like 5-7 in the SEC, so they'll likely have a shot.

Our QB is fine, it depends on if our OL improves from atrociously God awful to just bad. I’m skeptical but I think 7 wins is definitely do able and I don’t think 7-5 gets Taggart fired.

I like the Brile's hire. No, 7-5 does not get him fired but probably just one more year instead of two which is what the radio guy suggested. 8 wins would get him two years and anything less only 1

Must be referring to the SEC West. The LEast is one of the worst divisions in any conference, including the Group of Five.

There’s some truth here. If SC didn’t suck so bad then Clemson’s schedule would be much tougher.

I think FSU has had 1 losing season in the last 40 years so I don't expect the fans to be very patient with mediocre seasons.

I worry that the o-line won’t look significantly different, which will lead to something like 6-6 for 2019, will make it even harder to recruit, leading to an even bigger rebuild for the new coach in 2021.

That said, I’m a fan, so I’m still hopeful. Didn’t love the Briles hire from an off field perspective, but now that he’s in Tallahassee, I really hope he has a big and immediate impact.

I wasn't intending to be flip when writing the post. Let's take the tossups one by one:

Boise State: First game of the year, BSU consistently an excellent G5, Briles' offense may not yet have gelled. if it is clicking, I think FSU wins. If not...

@ Virginia: Bronco has built a solid Virginia team who returns a lot. Game at Charlottesville early in season.

NC State: I think this is a win for the Noles, but no Nole ever discounts the Wuffpack, who plays FSU without fear.

Syracuse: Is this year's 'Cuse a flash in the pan, or not? Unlike Kentucky, they didn't lose most of their team to graduation.

Miami: The freaking Canes. Who knows which way this game goes? As a Hokie and Gator fan, I always worry about Miami.

@ Boston College: Chestnut Hill is always a challenge. Addazio will field a competent but unspectacular team every year.

@ Florida: Yes, I know, it's a rivalry game, but Florida looks strong on paper (lol!), and if true, the Swamp will be rockin'.

To get to nine wins, you'll have to beat five of these teams. In order:

    NC State
    Boise State
    Syracuse
    Boston College
    Virginia
    Miami
    Florida

    Thoughts?

Perfect, man. I love actually football talks. So, my opinion is that FSU will be markedly better this season. This will not be a great FSU team, or even a really good FSU team. But I don’t think it will be the train wreck it was in Taggart’s first season. I think the offensive line will likely take a sizable step forward (from worst in P5 to below average P5). I think Blackman will be decidedly better than Francois at QB and FSU has a really good group of skill position players. Like last season, FSU will field a good, not great, defense. Unlike last season, the defense won’t be put in as many bad positions by the offense. Okay, with all that being said, here’s my opinions on the opponents (listed in order of difficulty):

At Clemson: Automatic loss. The goal should be being competitive.

At UF: More than likely a loss. I think FSU can win this game, but I think UF will be the better team and the game is in the Swamp. I do think FSU will close the gap some. UF lost a lot on the o-line and FSU should be very strong at DT with Marvin Wilson and Corey Durden leading the way.

At UVA: Solid football team without exceptional talent. I think this will be a close game but UVA gets the edge at home.

At BC: BC is sneaky good at home. Another close game that home field gets the edge.

Miami: This is a home game and I think FSU finds a way to win because of simply not being a dumpster fire. FSU should have beaten UM the last two seasons with awful teams. UM will still have a poor o-line and QB play.

Syracuse: The Cuse lose Eric Dungey, who was their Tebow. They are not nearly as daunting away from the Carrier Dome. Edge FSU.

NC State: The Wolfpack loses A LOT, including star multi-year starting QB Ryan Finley. NC State is another team who’s much less daunting on the road. Edge FSU.

Boise State: Boise is a good program, but they also lose a lot from last season’s solid team, including star QB, Rypien. Traveling across country and playing in front of a very pro-FSU crowd to start the season for the new BSU QB won’t be easy. Edge FSU.

So, going through each opponent, I have settled more on an 8-4 final record (not 9 as I previously wrote). I do think 9-3 is slightly more likely than 7-5 though.

That was true a several seasons ago when a mediocre UF team was winning the division. But the SEC East is a lot better now that UGA is “all-in”. UF is also better under Mullen, UK is good under Stoops, Mizzou is solid, SCar and Tennessee have gotten better under Muschamp and Pruitt, and even Vandy is solid under Mason. The SEC East is actually one of the better P5 divisions now.

Look at the LEast since the playoffs began or over the past 10 years. Historically, UF begins in the top 20 every year but almost always falls off. Kentucky has had one decent year in the past 20. Only UGA has consistently performed at an above average level. Last year was the first time the LEast has shown any kind of a pulse during the playoff era. This year, I would expect Kentucky to fall to its normal play. Unless Mullen is able to turn UF around and outperform expectations again this year, the LEast will once again be one of the worst divisions in CF.
