Are you wanting a specific topic/subject?

For sports you can never go wrong with the 30 for 30 series. Free Solo is good.

Senna is my favorite. It tells the story of Aryton Senna, a three time F1 champion, whose untimely death during a race in Italy in May of 1994 and the repercussions it had on the sport. It's got a 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Even if you're not a racing fan it's a good watch.

Season 1 of True Detective is a documentary on policing and friendship. There’s a subplot about a serial killer. No kidding, the group interactions and interpersonal relationships and dysfunction was pretty accurate.

Some good strategery ( o_O ) and great map-work. But the only thing your Average Joe will get out of it (academically), if he didn't already know was that the Viet-Cong and the NVA were two "separate" entities. Being a Ken Burns Doc, you'll still get all the feel good stories and the humanization of like, EVERYTHING, but this one wasn't like his The Civil War (one of the best documentaries of all time, @Deathroll ! o_O) or even Baseball.

He had living breathing witnesses for this one. The ones he put on camera did a GREAT job, but he could have done much more with the thing. OP, the last episode was the best, IMO, detailing the fall of Saigon and everything that went along with it.

To @Deathroll 's credit though, we tend to share a taste in documentaries, and long as they aren't told by Jubile Early himself. o_O If he recommends it, it's worth watching. Generally.

Again, as long as it's not one by Albert Sydney Johnston. o_O

One thing I found almost hilarious about Ken Burns' Vietnam is that the Russians come up with the most simple solutions to the most complex problems. Laughing

American and South Vietnam, Russian, China, and whoever else was involved...……. when it came to the negotiating table, SOMEBODY (can't remember who at the moment) didn't like the negotiating table's LITERAL setup and negotiations couldn't begin until all sides sat down at "The Table." Apparently the aggrieved party didn't like that the NVA and the Viet-Cong were on two different sides of the Table and they threw a hissy fit and wouldn't come to "The Table."

Long story-short, the Russians came up with the perfect solution...….. make the table ROUND so there wouldn't be any "sides." Laughing

It reminds me of an adage from the old TV show "The West Wing," spoken by Leo McGarry (I've actually preached accurate simplicity like this to my employees.....) ……..

Leo said (paraphrasing): The US Government spend years, thousands of man hours, millions of dollars, etc., to develop a pen that writes in Space (zero gravity and all). 'Know what the Russians did? ! ? !

    They used a pencil. o_O

    Hope you get better soon.

If you want something interesting and non- run of the mill, look up any documentary on China that's more than an hour and a half long, especially concerning that "Pewter-Ware" Army they dug up where none of the soldiers faces are the same, etc.

Look up Mansa Musa (Musa I of Mali), the single richest man in the history of mankind, by EXPONENTS, and the man who may have inadvertently, by his very wealth, initiated the Rape of Africa.

Read the book Black Elk Speaks... nevermind ALL YOU'LL GET OUT OF IT, it'll impress the bourgeoisie of ANY Midwestern State if you say you have.

WORLD WAR I documentaries are more interesting than WWII documentaries, BELIEVE ME, why? ….. we've all been raised on Hitler and Stalin, even Mao. We all know their stories by now...………

PRUSSIA ! GREAT little Empire that if they were a bit bigger, we'd all be speaking German right now. Whooped Colonization-Strength, "World Power" France's ASS in 1871, If I remember correctly. o_O

But this is my PERSONAL FAVORITE, though it's not everybody's cup of tea. For years (pleasure reading, NOT academic study...…… gosh damn @Cavgator …. ) I read about the Byzantine Empire.

The Byzantine Empire (what we call them today) was nothing more than the continuing Roman Empire in the EAST, after what the uneducated, unwashed MASSES call The Fall of the Roman Empire after Odacer (one of a hundred LITTLE MEN, who happen to be in the right place at the right time {Like Mehmet II and Constantinople in May of 1453} took over for Romulus Augustus, probably the LAST of the pure Caesars.

I could go on, but if we're on the Byzantine thing and their Emperors (which is every BIT as interesting as the traditional Roman Emperors, simply CHRISTIANIZED), then I'd recommend 3 books. A short series by John Julius Norwhich……..

Or, totally different direction, and you obviously have computer access, you can look of the History of the Mafia, The Five Families, and so on. You'll fall asleep before you've read, watched videos on, or looked up all the things I can offer you. Laughing

Ken Burns makes compelling if schmalzy TV. Too bad he makes such biased and inaccurate history.
