Definitely, sometimes it is calculated. There are times I think they want to get tossed because nothing they do is working. 🤣 Some coaches are really dumb about it, like they'll get T'ed up when their team has the ball. So not only do they give up the free throws, they also give the ball back to the other team.
I was just wondering how much is because they are pissed and how much is strategy.
I would say 95% of the time it's because they are pissed (or because they have no chance to win and they just don't give a shit anymore).
Borden just tosses coaches because it gives him a boner.
Some of it , maybe most of it, its just the emotion of the game. You can tell as an official if you are gonna have to give that 2nd one....I'ts usually pretty clear. Hell I had a coach tell me---"If you give me one here, you better be prepared to give me a second...." 🤣 ..I told him---No problem---I always carry extra ones...
...But hey coach, you do know I gotta write this shit up, right? And he just goes---"You've been fukin awful all night...."

I worked a game where the coach told me---"We are just fukin horrible. I don't wanna watch this shit anymore....Can you get me out of here...? Told him---"Ill meet you half way....."
