Why is a team with a losing conference record even close to being ranked?

Michigan St Spartans (14-4, 6-1). Seems like a respectable record but just got beat down by a middle of a pack Purdue team by 30 points:

Purdue's (10-8, 3-4) best chance for a post season this year wil either be the NIT or CBI.
MSU should drop all the way to 25 or so for that kind of shellacking!

In the SEC, we let our performance do the talking!

In the Big 14, only Michigan St (14-4, 6-1)has a decent conference record. All of the rest are either under 0.500 or just one game above 0.500.

I guess that in relation to the Big-Ten, Michigan State is THE BOMB and all of the rest SUCK!

In conference play, those three teams are only 4-3, 4-2 & 3-4, respectively. Too mediocre to be ranked in the top 25 of the AP/Coachs' polls.

Big-Ten should change their name to the Big-Mediocre Conference because that is what they actually are!

Because of their conference record, only Michigan St deserves to be ranked. But hardly top 10 or even top 20 - not after that 29 point beat down by a 10-8 Purdue Big-Mediocre team.

After getting some early season hype, the rest are nothing special! Certainly undeserving of a ranking, right now!

One of you Mediocre-Teams could separate from the pack. Or, you will all just have mediocre records just above or below 0.500!

You have to admit, what the hell is Ohio St and Michigan St doing in ANY Top 25 poll. They both should have been long gone after last week!
