I'm going to visit my brother in a few weeks, and decided to bring him a bottle since he bought tickets to a Sammy Hagar/The Circle show, and won't let me pay him back.
He said he's been getting into bourbon lately, so I went to the ABC store with the intent to buy him a bottle of Jefferson's Ocean Bourbon. [IMG]
As soon I walked towards the bourbon aisle, the lady at the register told me she had 3 bottles of Blantons left, and they don't normally last long, and that they were highly requested from customers. I left with a bottle of Blantons. I really don't know much about Bourbon's.

Did I do good? Will this be a good bottle for a gift?

It's a quality Bourbon. Any Bourbon drinker will always be happy to have another bottle in their collection.

Blanton’s is a good choice to give as a gift. I don’t think you’ll find any bourbon drinker that doesn’t like it.

Blantons was cheaper by about $30-$40 depending on what bottle of Jefferson Ocean I bought.

I haven’t tried Jefferson’s Ocean, but Blanton’s is one of the few $50 and over bottles that I think is actually worth the price. And normally, when I buy any kind of booze that’s got some sort of gimmick like the whole “aged at sea” thing...it’s never as impressive as the price tag suggests. Blanton’s is the old reliable, that’s why it doesn’t stay on the shelf for very long.

My only issue with purchasing "expensive" Bourbon/Whiskey is the cheap stuff is so damn good. Why bother spending $50 on Blantons when you can have Buffalo Trace for half the cost?

That’s kind of what I was getting at. There are plenty of great options in the 30-40 dollar range that are every bit as good as most $75 bottles, but I think Blanton’s is actually priced fairly.

The Sammy Hagar lawn seats were $50, and as a bonus, Night Ranger is opening. I think I may know two songs. Lol
Peter Frampton and Jason Bonham Led Zep Experience/Evening will be a good one.
Got to be a stage hand for JB before.

    The Jefferson Ocean is great.

But I prefer the Jeffersons Reserve just slightly more.

Blanton's is damn good, made at the Buffalo Trace Distillery (which also makes Pappy, Weller, and EH Taylor) outside of Lexington KY. Great tour if you're ever up that way.

Another cool thing, all of the tops of Blanton's have the horse and rider, and a small letter. The letters spell out B-L-A-N-T-O-N-S and depict a horse race from start to finish. The one with an "S" shows the jockey raising his arm in triumph of a win.

Blanton's is a good pour. Tasty stuff. I've got a 23 year Pappy coming if Trump makes it through his first term. Expensive bet with my brother.

I do think the aged at sea is a gimmick, but it's a gimmick that works. Not from being at sea, but because of the constant movement. I'm not scientist, but I bet you could get the same result just by putting the barrels in a machine that rocks them slowly. It may be placebo, but I think it makes a taste difference.

Regarding expensive vs reasonably priced, I agree that there are so many choices under $50 now that are really good, there is no reason to go high-end anymore. Basil Haydens Dark Rye is my new go to, along with Buffalo Trace, and the classic Bulleit Rye

Jeffersoms, is supposedly getting a little sea air salt absorbing through the barrels, and also the sugars caramelizing from the heat

Blanton’s was the first single barrel product, everybody does single barrel now. Excellent bourbon, cannot go wrong.

I have the full set of tops and a handful of extras. Anyone looking, lmk what letter.

Special note. Blantons is Art’s pour on Justified and also stocked in Keneau room in John Wick.

    Sea salt = gimmick,
sugars: I don't know enough about the science. But if it is true, just crank up the heat in the warehouse that also contains the rocking machines.

A friend of mine was missing the A. I brought a bottle to a football party that had the A.
I think I could have traded his car for my bottle. I told him that if we finish the bottle, He could just have it. He was slightly inebriated by the third quarter.

I was at the ABC store in Birmingham to get the usual Woodford Reserve. On the side shelf where they keep the rare stuff, They had one bottle left of Blantons.
Also this guy once bought me a shot of Pappy 15 year old before.

I can't imagine anything hotter than the top floor of a bourbon wearhouse in KY in August. They are black, metal and unconditioned buildings. They are suffocating

It's crazy how much of the angel's share there is in 23 years. I think they lose more than half the barrel of bourbon before it is bottled. pappy 15 hits pretty hard at first but gives a great inside hug. I would love to try the 23 year old.
