What are your thoughts on this technical foul? You mentioned that refs have been instructed to crack down on taunting this season but this seems a little extreme, especially considering it was the players 2nd tech of the game which led to his ejection. Would you call that? You’ve said before that you don’t necessarily agree that you’re supposed to be more aggressive at calling techs for taunting but you’re going to do your job. Just wondering where you would draw the line. Thanks

Really bad. IMO had he done something to warrant a technical, the lead official(under the goal) would have gotten it. It all happened right in front of him. Now that's not saying things can happen in front of you and you not see it, but...........I don't think this is the case. I didn't see anything TBH. And i watched the video at least 5-6 times.
To answer your question, NO, absolutely not. I wouldn't have called that. Especially understanding that it would have been his 2nd(technical foul). If I am going to call a technical that is going to lead to an ejection, you can bet your ass it's going to have to be much,. much, much worse than that.
I understand the NCAA's concern with taunting. It can, and has led to some nastiness. SO I understand the "crack down".BUT........Allow officials some leeway. Unfortunately, the rule really doesn't do that. Personally for me, it just has to be a very demonstrative action, i.e yelling AT the opponent, or in his direction. Making a gesture AT the opponent. Trash talking I'm not so quick to get. IF you go out of your way to do so----Running up to said player, etc, etc...then yeah, I'm gonna get ya. But if it just part of the play........Naaaaaah. Example:
Kid dunks, turns around and yaps----Technical.
Kid dunks. Starts back on "D" on said player is running aide him and there's some jaw -jacking---------Naaaaaah. Unless contact goes with it. When time presents itself I will let said plyer know---"C'mon, now man. You know you can't do that...". Or something along those lines.
As an official who played, I understand the emotion of the game. BUT, I also understand there are rules and protocol I HAVE TO FOLLOW. It's a fine line, really. And a difficult one at times. But this one? Naaaah. I'd let that go.
