It does. Alexa and similar devices always have the mics on. That's why they can respond to your commands. If the mics weren't always on, how would the device know you're talking to it? It'd be like a blind person putting earplugs in but magically knowing to take them out after you say their name. They can't see or hear you, so they wouldn't know you called their name.

The question is whether or not what the devices hear before being summoned is stored and/or transmitted somewhere.

I don't care either way because my conversations in the living room aren't that juicy.

Four things I don't have. Cell phone, denim pants, Alexia and sleep. I'm about to try to get the latter. F*ck I'm tired. I'm really hoping I can get a couple of hours .F all you blue jean wearing, cell phones using, alexia using dildos that get a goood night sleep. I"m so jealous. I think Sunday was the last time I slept.

I've done some research on the issue for work (we were interested in some of the legal theories in a class action complaint against Amazon). Basically, the devices are always listening for the trigger word(s), and they continually "record" 1-3 second snippets to determine whether the user requested the services in a sort of RAM that is continuously overwritten, stored locally, and never transmitted. So in that sense the device is always listening, but (unless triggered) it does not store or transmit what it hears.

If the device determines that it heard the trigger word, it records the subsequent message, transmits it to the service's servers, and that recording is kept unless/until the user requests that it be deleted (for Google, you can see all of the recordings it has of you and delete them in mass or individually; I use a Google Home and Google Assistant all the time and found one questionable recording over several months). The servers then try to figure out what you want and give you a response.

Sometimes these devices have false positives where they think the trigger word was said but it was not. Those false positives are treated the same as actual requests. And some small fraction (0.2% or so) of all recordings (false positives and actual requests) are listened by employees and/or third-party contractors to help improve the voice recognition software. So there is a chance, albeit remote, that a Google (or Amazon or Apple) employee and/or third-party contractor will overhear something sensitive like the grunt you make as you "release" into a dress sock. But it's unlikely.

This article is a good start. https://www.theverge.com/2019/7/11/...uman-contractors-listening-recordings-vrt-nws.

My brother and I were having a discussion about evolution/Big Bang on his Facebook wall. He’s atheist and likes science. I think there has to be some sort of intelligent design.

My brother tagged Neil and I forgot what my brother said in that post. I responded not really caring about who I thought was one of my brother’s hippie friends because he was a stoner at the time.

Then the guy I thought was a stoner joined in, calling me wrong, and telling me to read a book.

I had a response typed up telling him to piss off and for him to go read a book. I thought it was a hippie that I was smarter than calling me dumb.

I figured I’d check the link out quick before sending it and then I realized the guy I was responding to matched the authors name. I deleted what I was about to say and I don’t remember what I ended up saying.

This was back in 2012 I believe. Like a year later I start seeing commercials about him getting his own TV show and laughed about almost telling him to piss off.

Reminds me of the (most recent) time that a Twitter user told David Simon to watch "The Wire."

To a lesser extent I remember someone here trying to educate me saying something like “ultrasound can detect a fetal heartbeat at 4 weeks”.

White Minnesota HS recruit commits to Wisconsin. Probably worried after whites have been getting targeted by mobs in Minneapolis.

Outside of being young, have you guys ever been straight scared of weather? I've seen two tornadoes in the past. Both caused fight or flight responses. First one was during the first couple of weeks moving here. I could see it far away, but it kept getting closer and closer and closer. I ended up in the bathtub with my dog with a mattress over us. Second one, I was at Walmart and they decided to lock the doors. The ppl outside were trying to get in and the ppl inside were trying to get out to their family in their cars. That's when I found out Walmart sliding doors actually opened up like barn doors. The customers broke it. I wanted to drive home and it looked like a scence from Twister. I live about 5 minutes away and wanted to get home to my wife. During the drive I slowed at a redlight. Ppl were blazing past the redlight in the turning lane and shoulder.

It was in either 1998 or 1999 but my friend and I were at his mothers house (in OKC) and we had a local channel on. We were watching the meteorologist warn everybody about a storm system that was rolling into town. At one point he described where the wall cloud was and pointed out the road it was above and what direction it was going. It happened to be the major street right by us so our dumbasses decided to get in our car and drive up to the Lake Hefner dam road and watch it come in. OKC is extremely flat and this rise gives you a viewing point where you can see most of the local area around there. We watched this wall cloud come in and go right over our heads. I’ll never forget the sound as it passed over, like people who have survived tornados say, it sounded like a train in the distance. As it was coming at us the wind was coming in pretty hard, as it went overhead it completely stopped, and then as it passed it came at us again really hard from the other direction. Never felt anything like that before. The only people up there were morons like us and weather chasers. Anyways, it ended up forming a tornado that went into the Nichols Hills area which is where the old money lives. That’s the coolest weather experience I’ve ever had.

Cheers. I’m up way too early. I woke up before 5:00. I usually struggle to sleep on the long plane rides. So if I don’t get any sleep I will be renting a car at 2:00 tomorrow afternoon in Scotland on no sleep and I’ll be driving on the other side of the road in a country I’ve never been to. Good times for sure.

Im fairly certain you can sue for getting farted on in america, land of the frivolous lawsuit.

In related news, I'm pretty sure you can also be paid money to fart on people via craigslist.

This thread is safe for now. As long as people follow my earlier warning, there is no reason to shut it down.

I will pin it when the off season is over.

I usually don't care for the complimentary/atta boy posts, but since Steve Harvey is involved, i gave you a like and added some respect on top of that. That dude makes me laugh.

I will also add that I am shocked we made it this far with this thread. For the most part, outside of some childish stuff, people have been able to debate different opinions without the usual results in threads like these.
