I thought I would tackle what I believe is the most competitive conference in college football.

I think the top 4 teams in the Big 12, in order, are:

    1. West Virginia. Will Grier and his stable of receivers will continue to torch weak Big 12 secondaries. The defense will have to improve but they do have a slight advantage over Oklahoma: They get to play the Sooners in Morgantown.

    2. Oklahoma. Kyler Murray is the much-hyped replacement of Baker Mayfield, but let's face it: we haven't seen him play any meaningful football. However, if he does live up to the hype and he can exploit any remaining weaknesses in the West Virginia defense, the Sooners could grab another Big 12 title.

    3. Texas. I think Ehlinger or Buechele finally rounds into form and Herman's rebuilding of the Texas program begins to pay dividends. Plus, the defense looks to be a strength for the Longhorns again.

    4. TCU. I originally had the Horned Frogs at the 3rd spot until the injury of Ross Blacklock. Without a defensive line performing at an optimal level, the TCU defense won't be able to make up for the growing pains of breaking in a new starting quarterback.

So, what do you guys (and gals) think of my list?

    Appreciate your thread....

WVU should be good with Grier at QB , Holgerson is a great coach also....it will be very tough to beat them in Morgantown...we will see....

Sooners seem to be much much better in the secondary this year with several shutdown DB, most people didn’t know OU played last year with the 4 th string nickel and several 2nd and 3rd team DBs , this year is entirely different...nickel is in the game a lot in the Bug 12...Murray runs a 4.3 forty and has a cannon arm just is not the natural born leader Baker is. I think Murray will add a dimension to the game that will not be handled by opposing teams....

Texas has to prove it on the field they always have had the talent they just don’t seem to put it together....

TCU will have great defense as usual, it always comes down to the QB

I hadn't heard Murray was that fast. It will certainly be a huge game when Oklahoma and West Virginia meet!

I think Brown is the only sub 4.4 guy on the team. Murray has a great, 3-4 steps and is shifty but he's is not going to outrun, fast guys. He will make them miss but not outrun. I think he's 4.5 but his 20 yard time, will be one of the fastest.

I obviously see a lot of RPO but I think LR, will go old school and run some 95 Nebraska offense. That sort of wishbone, RPO.

No Iowa State in the top 4. I'd swear I've heard differently.

Season hasn't started but I will break down 9 teams that have a chance

    If everything falls in place

Baylor- Great WRs, Good QB and a Defense that should be better

Texas Tech- Very different team. Looking to evolve from an Air Raid team. Underappreciated D. Returns 10 starters

Iowa St- If they can replace the leadership that left and Montgomery is a Heisman candidate

If the majority of things fall in place but still can withstand an injury or players not progressing.

Oklahoma St- Very good RBs, Question is at QB, Very good OL and DL and a new DC

West Virginia- Explosive Offense. An offense no where close to OU last year.
If they become better on third down and in the red zone they have a chance

Kansas St- Great OL, 2 QBs and a decent RB. Will take Snyder less time to get this team right. Questions on D.
Can their O overcome an average D

Teams who should play in Arlington

TCU- Great D, QB that can be explosive, Perfect mixture of speed and physicality.
Tough September and injuries could hurt them

Texas- Elite D that may be even better in 2018, Great skill guys, Questions at QB and OL.
If Ehlihger doesn't develop they could have issues.

If not in Arlington someone should be answering questions

Oklahoma- Elite skill players with a great OLine. Underappreciated D.
    Great incoming freshmen.

If Kyler Murray takes a few hits he could take off for baseball and Austin Kendall may not be the guy.

3 to 1 chance that it is Texas vs Oklahoma

9 to 1 TCU vs Oklahoma

15 to 1 West Virginia vs Oklahoma

40 to 1 TCU vs Texas

Don’t disagree on anything you said about K-State except I think Alex Barnes will be 1st team All-Big 12 RB. We’ll also have problems with special teams

Interesting note out of camp is that Drake Stoops is tearing it up. If there wasn't so much talent at WR, he wouldn't redshirt. Always open and catches everything.

I never even bothered to watch his hs highlights thinking they gave him a walk on spot for novelties. Guess not.

Good look at all the teams in contention. I also liked your comment that if Texas doesn't make it to Arlington, Herman should be on the hot seat. I still think he should have one more year before they seriously think of replacing him, though.

It's OU until someone dethrones them. Pretty simple way I look at it.
Our red-zone O is now using TE's and BIG backs. Our D is the best
we may have had, ever. The depth on the D is weak and can not afford
any injuries. It's going to be an interesting season.

Yes, the Sooners still hold the conference in their hands. Any other team needs to take a significant step forward to beat them.

Stop blowing smoke up his keister. OU is going to chin check and dominate the Big Xll. 15 and 0, Natty is guaranteed. You must believe to achieve.

4 of the 5 losses last year were by a TD or less including @ West Virginia (16-20) when ISU bungled the potential winning TD pass in the final minutes. Lost to Iowa in OT and flat out gave the game away on the last play @ K-State last year. Not whining about the outcomes of those games. Just pointing out how close ISU was to being an 11-2 team last year. As for this year, OU plays in Ames on 9/15. West Virginia on 10/13. K-State on 11/24. Going to be a fun year!

OK is clearly the best team in the Bigxll and has been for quite awhile.

Although I think WV has a good chance to win the conference and make the playoffs this year.

Everyone thinks Texas is overrated going into 2018.

I am not so sure of that.
If Texas can maintain their elite D. 5th in defensive efficiency which also included the most defensive TDs I think Texas can win the conference with an improve offense
    Oklahoma is their only challenge.
I say they split but Texas wins the rematch.

Texas' losses on defense were significant. Best DL, LB, and the majority of the secondary. OL and RB a question mark. If the QB can hit anything besides his head, they have some solid WRs.

8 or 9 wins at best.

If you have Texas over Oklahoma State, or Iowa State you are flat out wrong. The Running backs, and Offensive Lines will be the point of separation in the Big XII. Texas will be questionable on both of those.

    1a. Oklahoma
    1b. West Virginia

    3a. TCU
    3b. Oklahoma State
    3c. Iowa State

    6. Texas

My guess is we put up 31 with a nobody at QB. Mainly ran the ball, and that's odd vs OU, normally... unless you're Tavon Awesome, lol!
We were down after Grier, @ OU and put up 31... only thing I can think of, TBH.

I would agree with OP it will be most competitive / tight top to bottom. Definitely not as top heavy as the SEC or B1G this year, and probably not as good either, but will be a gauntlet in the XII.

    Don’t count out K-State yet...

In following CFB for decades, I will say Texas smells like a 9-10 win team even with all their haters. Just a feel.

I can see OU, Texas or WVU in Arlington playing one of the others. One of them could get into playoff too.

TCU and K-State have an outside shot, but I see both as 8-4.

Okie State and ISU at 7-5/6-6.

    Baylor will make progress.

Kliff gets fired from tech after 5-7. But will beat Ole Miss.

KU will be awful. Only dead weight.

I can see this happening given 2011-2012 teams for us. Texas at 8 way too low. Top 5 for sure - 4/5 likely.
