Because ho-lee chit that is some good television. I'm not sure if the makers of it are taking liberties or exaggerating, because those commies couldn't have been that stupid. I don't think I'm giving away spoilers here, as we all basically know what happened, but the reactor exploded and their initial response was "There was no explosion. Everything is fine. Let's drink vodka and celebrate how awesome the Soviet Union is."

That show is going to win a ton of awards.

Yes. It is very good, and yes......that's how the Soviets were.....75% of everything they said was propaganda.

I've watched the first three episodes over the past few days. Enjoyed it so far. Pretty good acting (Jared Harris) and I really liked the soundtrack. Dreadful.

Only gripe, and maybe it's stupid, but it really should be in Russian with English subtitles.

When everyone’s primary objective is to CYA ...

Refusing to believe that the core was gone / exploded / open is incredible denial to a degree that its hard to imagine.

And to think that it was less than 48 hours from being 10 x worse , killing whole countries off , 60-100 million or more dead ( or worse ).

From what I've heard it's pretty accurate historically (I'm sure theyve taken some liberties for the sake of drama).

I'm going to wait until the mini series is completed so I can watch it on a lazy Sunday. Though I just binged Barry and have nothing else to watch so I might say fvck it and try it now.

Yes, I never really knew until now that it was close to being a whole lot worse (and it was pretty bad). I have really felt for the people that needlessly died and suffered because of this tragedy.

I think they were saying it's not possible because it was mathematically impossible to them at the time.

I could see people being skeptical to the point of being irrational in that case. When Flight 232 crashed in Iowa I recall hearing that reports of complete hydraulic loss being reported by the pilots was met with immediate skepticism to the point of assuming there had to be another issue by the grounds crew, as they thought 100% loss of hydraulics to be impossible as well.

Yep. But not trusting the people that looked into the reactor and said it was gone was very negligent and foolish. And many steps after that were foolish as well.

There is an accompanying weekly podcast that features the producer of the show. Pretty good.

I didn't like the scenes where they shot all if the animals. Seems like people confuse good TV and shock-factor.

Again, another scene that seemed gratuitous.

Really good and also pretty depressing. Man, the pain some of those poor SOBs went through because their country fudged up. Not to mention that animals and environment.

Only one more episode, interested to see how they conclude it.

The way I understand it is that nuclear reactors shouldn’t / can’t explode because it’s os different than other ways of creating energy. It’s essentially always exploding w energy obtained from fission and if got out of control it would meltdown instead of just a instantaneous explosion. BUT they made so many mistakes w basically turned off the outlet for steam to escape ( releasing energy ) while simultaneously increasing the output of energy to 100x what it was supposed to produce. Got a thermal explosion that blow off the roof , then oxygen and other gases entered the core causing a monster hydrogen explosion that blew the core apart and set the graphite on fire

I'm watching The Americans now, too. It's great. It's got me interested in Soviet culture. It seems like Soviet people are pretty admirable, but the bureaucracy just did not encourage any checks and balances. As they said in Chernobyl, the Soviet Union's worst fear was being humiliated, and that just snowballed the whole thing.

Every show on right now is better than GoT season 8. I'd rather watch Doc McStuffins or PAW Patrol with my daughters than rewatch any of it.

The Americans is a fantastic show. Really enjoyed it. (And Keri Russell...have mercy).

Your assessment seems pretty well said. I think the Russians could have made remarkable achievements and been every bit the equal to US if they had just got out of their own way. They have vast natural resources.

I have been wondering, from the start, about how accurate the story is, but what a colossal cluster**** that place was. ****ing ego driven dipshits.

I've been reading some reviews today. This is from show creator Craig Mazin:

“This is as close to reality as we can get and still be able to tell the story in five episodes. It was our obsession, and certainly our intention all the way, to be as accurate as we could be. The simple rule that we had, if we were going to change something, it had to be only so that we could tell the story fully. We never changed anything to make it more dramatic than it was, to hype anything, to amp it up. For us, this is a story about truth. The last thing we wanted to do was fall into the same trap that liars fall into. This is very much a well researched factual dramatic representation.”

That didn't bother me, given the scope of all that happened. Kill a bunch of contaminated dogs, no biggie.

There was another fire in 91 at reactor #2. God damn. The Russians should be allowed to even have nukes or nuclear energy.

They are reckless with the most dangerous shit on the planet

I recall getting home from school and seeing this on the news and asking my parents what it meant. There was actual fear the reactor cloud would come all the way to the US and contaminate the whole planet. Lots of craziness.

But for those of you not around, the Cold War was very real with lots of mutually assured destruction brought up constantly. We did actual nuclear bomb/war drills at school more often than fire drills. In hindsight it was a joke, basically go sit in the hall next to one another put your hands behind your head and your head in between your knees. Guess that’s physically the closest you can get to kissing your own ass goodbye. At the time it seemed reasonable, but as an adult it is incredibly silly and wouldn’t do a thing with a 50 megaton nuclear weapon going off.

That said, fantastic show. Highly recommend for anyone who remembers this occurring.

But they really had to do that with the animals. Brutal job, but no sense in sweeping it under the rug. People need to know the shocking truth in order to hopefully learn our lesson.

What amazes me most about the show was how close half of Europe came to being decimated if the core had sunk down and hit that water. Whenever I see something unbelievable on that show, I immediately look it up only to see that the show is accurate. Growing up, Chernobyl was the worst nuclear accident there was, but due to lack of information, it was just an accident that required some people to abandon the town the reactor was located in. I had no clue how bad it actually was and how close it came to being far worse than anyone could ever imagine.

Lol. How is something dramatic that actually happened "gratuitous"? The scene illustrates the extreme situation the miners found themselves in.

I think you are better off sticking to the hokum that is The Americans.

They spent WAY too much time on the killing of the animals. Candidly, iDGAF about some animals. Exterminate as many as needed. Total waste of screen time. Could have been covered in 15 seconds.
