What is up with that this year?
Statistically their offense has almost always been better than their defense. Commentators are just terrible at their jobs.
Howland's Pitt teams were more defensive teams and people just carried that over to Dixon.
Only 3 Pitt teams under Dixon(Out of 12) have had better defense than offense. One of those being his first year with all Dixon players. Only 5 out of 12 teams have had top 25 defenses. They're not a bad defensive team most years. Usually they're top 50, but they're usually even better offensively. They've been top 25 offensively 10 out of 12 seasons, so twice as often as they have been defensively.
This is also not the first year with a big disparity in offense/defense. In 2012 they were 31st on offense and 149th on defense.

He stopped coaching defense years ago.
Good win for them yesterday, and a really great gesture on the part of the Pitt students, expressing sympathy over the passing of Coach Smith.
